Measuring height activities

Teaching measurement to a kindergarten class is hard!!! I think it's one of the most challenging units, mainly because there's so much to measurement (length, height, weight, temperature, capacity) and some concepts (such as where to start measuring and where to end!) can be difficult for students to fully understand. Height chart: after measuring the children, we put a piece of ribbon on the wall with their picture at the top. We will re-measure them in the spring and add a ribbon of another color to show a visual graph of heights.

Direct measuring with a cute poem of how tall the child is. Start, middle or end of the year would be cute.

Measuring how tall we are

We painted different size flowers and identified smaller and taller. We also measured one of our flowers with unifix cubes and made a smart guess about the size of one of the other flowers. This idea came from Kim Adist's Spring is Here Fun Activities for Math unit.
