Alexandrian library

The Royal Library of Ashurbanipal has sometimes been described as the ‘first library’ in the world, or the ‘oldest surviving royal library in the world’. The library was discovered by archaeologists who were excavating at the site of Nineveh, today known as Kuyunjik.

The only stipulation is that the scholars must live at the Museum in Alexandria. It is at the Alexandrian Museum that Euclid will develop geometry, Archimedes will lay the basis for calculus, & Eratosthenes will calculate the Earth's circumference to within one percent. Others will postulate a heliocentric universe, establish a 365 1/4 day calendar, develop hydraulics & pneumatics, and find the link between the brain & the nervous system.

The Hellenistic period was a period of great intellectual thought and writing. The scrolls shown in this picture are great examples of the kinds that would of been found in libraries across the Mediterranean and most famously at the great library of Alexandria.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is built on a magnificent site alongside Alexandria's ancient harbor in the historic center of the city.
