This is the first I've seen a Black Squirrel here, and I have a lot of squirrels :) We've seen Red, Grey and a Flying Squirrel but never a black one. I believe I read they are a variation of the Grey Squirrels, but I think they are uncommon in New Hampshire. If anyone knows more about their numbers here I'd love to know more.

An older shot of a pretty rare sight. A melanistic chipmunk...too much of the pigment melanin...similar to black squirrels which are really grey squirrels with the same story. My daughter says it's a squirrel - looks like a rabbit to me. Took it out the back porch as it was on the move away. In the "Black Forest" (not all the animals are black :) NE of Colorado Springs about 7500 - 7800 ft. elevation.
