many papers are stacked on top of each other in an office cubicle with writing on them

Before I start, I have a confession to make: I used to hate notebooks. I’ve always loved writing, so I heard the advice to keep a journal or a notebook about a million times. I’d buy a pretty journal, and, after a few days, or, at the most, weeks, abandon it on my shelf. I couldn’t tell why—whether I was too lazy, or real life was too boring, or if I just didn’t know anything worth writing down. By the time I signed up for a writing class at my home school co-op, I’d sworn off journals. At…

an open plastic storage box filled with lots of papers

Journaling is not just a little thing you do to pass the time, to write down your memories—though it can be—it’s a strategy that has helped brilliant, powerful and wise people become better at what they do.

From Karen Finch - As my second son prepares to graduate from high school, I've wistfully dawdled back in time sifting through old photos, school papers and projects. And these, my little gems. Easy peasy simple index cards. Flipping through these little treasures reminds me what our days were like, how time lingered. No intrusive, all-too-handy devices ensnared us. And nothing intimidating about index cards here. No fancy hardbound journals. No special pens. Just images, phrases, moods…

In this post I share how I set up my commonplace book with index cards and envelopes. This is not my last and only attempt to keep a commonplace book. I want to go through my old study notes and transfer them to this system so I can get rid of a lot of papers. I also want to hone in on the craft of writing a memoir using this method.

I saw this idea for a micro-journal awhile back (even before Pinterest!) Ha...it's hard to imagine a world without Pinterest! But it was pre-pinning and I loved the idea so I made one but never really used it! Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I sold it last year at a yard sale for like $2. But with the new year just beginning, I decided to make another one and actually start doing it! To be honest, I had already done all the stamping (because I made a few sets last time around) so all I…

an open planner book with notes on it and scissors next to the pages that are lined up

I've started using the typewriters again heavily, after several months of mostly writing by hand. As a result, I'm using the Circa/Rollabind notebooks again quite a bit. I like that I can put all my typewritten pages in a notebook for easy perusal, and with the knowledge that if one morning I get up and decide to hit the coffee house and write by hand for awhile, I can do that in the same notebook. In anticipation of November and for my own use now, I wanted a way to store/display index…

a red folder with a pen in it

I'm just wrapping up a year of maintaining my bullet journal practice using index cards instead of the more popular notebook form factor. It's heavily inspired by the century+ old Memindex method. AMA
