A decade after finishing the SC Johnson Administration building in Racine, Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright started the construction of the Research and Development Tower. The 1950s building for SC Johnson was the home to many of the company’s most well-known inventions and was in need of lab facilities for their rising research and development department.

Officials doubted that the famed architect's Johnson Wax headquarters in Racine, Wis., was structurally sound. But no one questions the master. CNET Road Trip 2013 checked out the stunning building.

Mushroom shaped columns, pyrex skylights and earthly coloured furnishings feature in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax Headquarters, an American manufacturer of household cleaning supplies. It was completed in 1939 in Racine, Wisconsin. Despite its location on an industrial park, Wright designed the building in his organic architecture style with references to natural forms, like his open plan office space which is described as “forest-like”. Called the Great Room, the double height space feature tree-like columns that sprout from 23 cm diameter base and widen to create lily-pad shaped concrete tops.
