Bring fractions and the concept of what is a fraction to life. This yummy fractions project uses pizza toppings to help deepen fourth grade students understanding of what is a fraction.

Pizza Fractions: Glue a red checked paper place mat into bottom of a small pizza box and a worksheet into the lid. Crust is a brown paper circle with a smaller red circle (sauce) glued on top. A smaller yellow paper (cheese) was cut into 8ths. Toppings were made from paper punches.

Fraction pizza! This a creative way to teach students the concept of fractions. This relates to the standard 3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Last week we finished our unit on fractions. We made these cute little fraction pizza posters to hang up. In first grade we really just touch on the basics of fractions but this activity was fun because it lets me differentiate a little. Then as a final activity we actually made real fraction pizzas. I called up the local pizza place and asked them if they would donate 20 pizza boxes to my class for a fraction project. The rest was history! We took some time to create pizzas to learn about equivalent fractions. Then, we used our pizzas to explore the idea that even though the pizza is the same size whole, we can cut it into different sized pieces.
