This image shows the three phases of the uterine cycle. During the first phase, the menstrual phase, menstruation occurs (shedding of endometrium - stratum functionalis lining). During the proliferative phase, the endometrial lining begins to build. During the secretory phase (after ovulation), the endometrium is at the optimal stage for implantation.

Menstruation comes in four phases: proliferative phase, secretory phase, premenstrual phase, and menstrual phase. The proliferative phase is where the endometrium grows thicker to about 2-3mm and estrogen promotes regrowth of blood vessels to it. The second phase is day 15 to 26 where the endometrium is 5 to 6 mm thick, good for embryonic growth. Next phase we see the endometrium deterioration. The last phase will be the of expelling the accumulated fluid.
