When I plant my tulips in containers I actually plant them in an inner pot. This means that once they have finished flowering I can deadhead them and leave them to die back naturally. If you want to keep your tulips for next year you MUST keep the foliage on as they photosynthesis and put the energy back into the bulb! BUT… For a reliable tulip display like mine I will always plant fresh each autumn. The bulbs that I don’t want anymore I can then replant in my school garden at work. What do YOU do with yours?? SOME tulips do come back for many years and a particular variety which is meant to is the Darwin hybrids. I get a good mix of early and late flowering varieties for succession. You can plant tulips all the way up to Christmas. What’s your favourite variety?
