Aaron S. Kanzer was a 2016 Democratic candidate for Second Barnstable District of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Kanzer's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Affordable Housing

  • The accessory apartment assistance program would become the most rational way to increase housing stock, meanwhile keeping rental payments within the district, and protecting the environment. Monthly rental payments do not go to landlords living outside the district - rather they will go to local homeowners who can greatly benefit from additional income.

Wastewater

  • Our innovative solution has two facets: 1. Legislation that incentivizes homeowners to install wastewater-friendly technologies, and 2. Attracting alternative technologies and their associated companies, in conjunction with the 208 Plan, that solve issues on a watershed-by-watershed basis.

Substance Abuse

  • Our innovative solution looks to assign Pigouvian excise taxation on inelastic drug and alcohol-related markets. These excise taxes will be minimal, thus not becoming a deterrent for purchase, yet providing enough additional tax revenues to be reallocated into prevention education services and proper harm reduction facilities. These additional revenues will give us the initial investments to properly quell substance abuse issues in the 2nd Barnstable District.

Homelessness

  • Homeless populations in the 2nd Barnstable District have increased rapidly as of recent (well into the hundreds), meanwhile, many look to relocate local shelters and services that help such populations. A lack of affordable housing as well as a limited number of housing vouchers has made providing shelter much more difficult. Provision of shelter should be a human right, therefore it is of upmost importance that the 2nd Barnstable District helps to house the homeless.

Economic Development

  • Our innovative solution will be the formulation of the 'Prospective Business Toolkit" program. Companies that would be preferable to have in the district will be approached - including those that could be associated with the building of a so-called "blue economy," which will emphasize our comparative advantage of neighboring coastal ecosystems and tourist industries.[1]
