Alan Duff was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 31A of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

Gun Rights:
- I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” means that the federal government has no right to take our firearms rights away. This is a strict limitation on the power of Congress, period. As a legislator, I will lead the charge in the state of Minnesota to nullify any unconstitutional executive order by the President or act of Congress that limits our right to keep and bear arms. Beyond this pledge, I believe that in a liberty-oriented society, no government should have the power to disarm individuals or regulate firearms or munitions.
- Therefore, a concern of mine is that there is no language to protect our gun rights in the Minnesota Constitution. Our neighboring states all have these protections, which limit the ability of their governors and legislatures from encroaching on their rights. In 2013, the DFL tried banning AR-15s and handguns with magazines over 7 round capacities. I will lead the charge in Minnesota to put a constitutional amendment on the Minnesota ballot so no future legislature can take our rights away.
Spending:
- In my opinion, the GOP should be supporting a reduction, or at least a freeze, in taxes, not proposing to increase taxes on a state that already ranks as one of the highest taxes states in the US. My opponent recently proposed increasing motor vehicle license fees to add an additional $100M in revenues to the state budget. I find proposed tax increases like this to be an unacceptable solution for the middle-class, senior citizens and the hard-working citizens of Minnesota. My opponent accused me of being “too conservative” for Minnesotan’s when I would challenge him on his tax increases when we both served together in county government, but my belief is that the GOP must stand strong on limited government, not increasing it from $30B to $40B as has been done the past 5 years.
- My solution is to propose the exact opposite: a bill to reduce license tab fees so that the residents of District 31A can have more money in their pockets to spend on their families as they wish.
Veterans:
- I support non-profit organizations which have been exceptional in taking care of the many unique needs of the disabled veterans residing in Minnesota. For example, I applaud one of our county commissioners in Minnesota who contacted me asking for help finding a disabled veteran who might be interested in a new home donated by various charities. At our initial meeting, I asked him why he was asking me to help him when he had a veteran service officer who worked for him at the county he governed. His answer was insightful; he said he wanted the job done right by a person with a passion for helping disabled veterans and proven effectiveness in getting the job done right. Several weeks later, we found a homeless disabled veteran and his pregnant wife, and we were able to provide them with a car, job, and home. This is an exciting story of thinking outside the normal box of government solutions and identifying nonprofit sources that are more vested in the issue and can solve it at no cost to the taxpayer. In addition, this exciting story continues as we held a baby shower and were blessed with many anonymous gifts generously dropped off for the couple at our front door, including a computer donated from a local business.
Term Limits:
- My solution is to introduce legislation to enact term limits for Minnesota state offices in a manner that benefits the citizens, and not the status quo politician.
Taxes:
- I have a simple promise: I will NEVER vote to raise your taxes. If I break this promise, I no longer deserve your confidence or support.[1]
