Campaign themes

2016

Zwirn's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Law and Order

The brave men and women of our nation’s police departments put their lives on the line everyday in order to protect and serve their communities. I have become disgusted with many career politicians turning their back on our hard working men and women in blue. As your assemblyman I will fight and stand shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement in their fight against the rising tide of crime plaguing the city. When families are fearful to leave their homes at night things have gotten out of hand. We need to bring peace and security back to our communities and we can only do that by standing behind our police not degrading them. This can be done by implementing more beat policing efforts to establish a stronger rapport between the community and local law enforcement.

Transportation

City and State officials for have neglected Southern Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula far too long. We are in dire need of better transportation solutions. Our infrastructure is crumbling and commuters continue to bear the brunt of the incompetence coming from City Hall and Albany. I would seek new private sector solutions to help our commuters. Key elements of my transportation agenda include a permanent ferry service, expansion of rail and subway service, and eliminating tolls.

Spending

Spending in Albany has gotten out of control. We need to balance the state budget and return to financial sanity before even more burden gets placed on our resident’s shoulders. The waste and pork must be eliminated from the system and money must return to taxpayer’s hands. I would fight to stop the increase of debt, cut our widening deficit, and end the reckless borrowing that has plagued our state for so long.

Education

Our community is in desperate need of engaging educational opportunities in all schools that inspire and motivate children to find their passions and become productive citizens. As part of my education agenda, I would emphasize merit-based attitudes towards the public school system, fight detrimental Common Core standards, and strengthen efforts to support vocational and skill based educational opportunities.

Taxes

None of us need to be reminded about how much we New Yorkers are forced to pay to Uncle Sam. Residents are fleeing left and right for lower tax jurisdictions, and honestly, I can’t blame them. On top of the high taxes, the cost of living is reaching unbearable levels for many hardworking families. We need to make our state competitive once again and allow New Yorkers to keep more of the money they’ve earned. I fully support lowering rates across the board for personal income, sales, and property taxes.[1]
