Food FAQs
How can I transition my dog to BARK Food?
We generally recommend transitioning food over the course of one week, gradually phasing out the old food, and introducing the new. For the first two days offer a meal that is 25% new food and 75% old food. After that, move to 50% and 50% for two days, then 75% new food and 25% old food for two more days. After that, your dog should be ready to eat only their new food!
During this transition, you will monitor for any vomiting, diarrhea, or appetite change that would indicate your dog is having trouble with the new food. For more on transitioning dog foods see our guide here.
Where is your food made?
Our food is made by a skilled food safety and food science team in Kansas and all of our meats are sourced in the US!
When it comes to our Alaska Pollock, we take extra lengths to make sure it’s wild-caught from pristine arctic waters in Alaska and certified as sustainably harvested.
Is this Fresh Food or Dry Kibble?
The base kibble is dry kibble. Choosing to feed fresh can certainly work for some dog parents. However, we’ve decided to sell dry-dog food because we believe that our blends have all the same nutrients, but can be more cost-effective and convenient. We add freeze-dried raw meat to all our meals and so we find that all our customers gobble it up and love it just as much!
Can you tell me more about your ingredients?
Our experts have carefully selected every ingredient to ensure that our kibble tastes delicious, supports digestion, and has the right ratio and balance of essential nutrients that dogs need to thrive.
We have extremely high standards for the ingredients and kibble that our dogs eat, which is why we employ strict quality control measures to confirm that every batch we make meets AAFCO's nutrient profile test for either Adult Maintenance or Growth and Reproduction.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email at [email protected] with additional questions - we'd love to talk about ingredients with you more!
What if My Dog Has Allergies?
Allergies are tricky. Sometimes they are against a food ingredient, sometimes they are against something in the environment. If you are lucky enough to know exactly what the allergy trigger is, you can try to avoid it. In the case of food, finding a food without a problem ingredient (usually a protein) is a good start -- but sometimes dogs are so sensitive to an ingredient that you need a prescription allergy diet from your vet (these diets are prepared in a very specific way to avoid any possible traces of allergy triggers).
If you don't yet know what exactly your dog is allergic to, we encourage you to work with your vet to treat any existing flare-ups (this is a separate treatment from just cutting out the allergy trigger) and to work through the best way to manage your dog's allergies. It may be appropriate for you to try different foods with different protein sources.
Why Are There Food, Supplement, and Accessory Recommendations for Different Breeds?
While our products are accessible to all pups, these breed have a unique profile of physical and behavioral characteristics that guide our recommendations. For example, labrador retrievers tend to skip the "chewing" part of eating dinner -- so we have a slow feeder bowl for them! Pitties tend towards sensitive skin, so we've recommended a skin and coat supplement to help with that. Our breed-focused recommendations will help your dog be their best, happiest, and healthiest dog-self. We will continue to evaluate this list of recommendations and may add more breeds in the future.
Do I Have to Purchase Supplements With My Bark Food Order?
Not if it doesn't feel right! But we recommend that you consider a supplement according to your dog's breed needs! How many of us humans have no skin care regimen whatsoever? High-maintenance coats and sensitive skin need extra love in dogs too. The same goes for joint care in breeds prone to skeletal or mobility issues. Providing you with everything we can to help your dog thrive is what we are here for.
Plus, the supplements are yummy so they act like a treat -- how great would it be to treat your dog with something they love AND provides extra health support?
Dental FAQs
What Is Bright dental?
It is a dog approved dental care! Bright dental is a fresh start for your dog's bad breath. It's the first toothpaste + dental chew combo. It combines the first triple enzyme toothpaste for dogs with a tasty scrubbing chew to help keep your dog's mouth clean.
What's included in the Bright kit?
Original Bright Kit:
30 Dental Chews (1 bag)
1 Gel Tube
Durable Bright Kit:
15 Dental Chews (1 bag)
1 Gel Tube
How does Bright dental work?
Bright dental works by combining an enzymatic toothpaste with scrubbing dental chews that reduce plaque.
Our enzymatic toothpaste contains three active enzymes: amyloglucosidase (AMG), Glucose oxidase (GOX), and Lactoperoxidase. Together, they break up harmful microbes and help clean. These three enzymes support the healthy anti-microbial processes already happening in your dog's mouth, but with a much greater level of enzyme activity.
Our dental chews are tough AND tasty, so while your dog is chewing, the starchy chew is scrubbing!
You use Bright dental by applying the toothpaste to the dental chews before giving to your dog. The dental chew will scrub at the plaque buildup on your dog's teeth, which exposes more surface area for enzymes in your dog's mouth to get to work.
Together, the Bright dental enzymatic toothpaste and dental chews are an easy, delicious daily routine for your dog.
How to use Bright dental?
Squeeze a french fry-sized line of toothpaste along the entire chew groove.
Let your pup chew the tasty chicken dental chews scrubs debris off the teeth and the enzymes break it down.
Where is Bright dental made?
The chews and triple enzymatic dental gel from this product are made in the USA from American ingredients, as well as one from Finland. The dairy used in the gel is created in Finland, where they ensure the lactose-free dairy will take care of the enzymes until they are ready to be used by your dog.
When will I see the results?
It all depends on the dog. For some dogs just chewing on Bright Dental chews might remove some of that buildup and make a visible difference in the first days. You certainly won't see the evidence of the toothpaste's enzymes doing their thing on the scale of days. More like weeks and months. Again, it all depends on the dog science.
What you can expect to see and smell:
1-3 weeks: Fresher breath
3-4 weeks: Cleaner teeth
6 months: A compliment from your vet
Can a puppy use Bright dental?
As long as your pup has all of their permanent teeth and can safely enjoy the harder texture of the dental chews, they should be good to go! The earlier they start on preventative dental care, the better! Feel free to see your personal Vet for questions specific to your pup’s health or development when using Bright.
Can Bright be used on a dog allergic to chicken?
Bright Dental toothpaste and chews both contain chicken. Every dog is different, and we know that some dogs with allergies have different tolerances, but we do not recommend Bright Dental for pups allergic to chicken.

Play FAQs
What comes in a box?
Our classic assortment is 2 toys, 2 treat bags + a surprise experience while our Super Chewer box comes with 2 tough, fluff free toys and 2 delicious bags of treats. We love to spoil our toughest pack members too!
What is the difference between BarkBox and Super Chewer?
When we talk about durability, we're talking about how long a toy lasts when it encounters a dog. But it gets more complicated from there. One thing we've learned in the 10 years of BARK's existence is that no two dogs – and no two dog people – think about the durability in the same way.
BarkBox toys should last long enough for your pup to enjoy it! These toys tend to be more fluffy, squeaky, and cuddly.
Super Chewer is going to be more for your dog that may be a heavy chewer that needs more durable toys. We work to create assortments of toys that cover a range of different durabilities (and other characteristics). A Super Chewer toy might not last forever, but it should last for as long as your dog wants it to. Because that's fun.
Are these toys and treats approved for puppies and different dog breeds?
We all enjoy treating our pups! However, for puppies under six months old or weighing less than five pounds, their primary nutrition should come exclusively from their kibble. Treats should be avoided for these young or small pups to support their healthy growth.
What size should I get for my dog?
We offer 3 sizes. All sizes are the same price, and you can switch sizes at any time.
Small: for most pups under 20 pounds
Medium: for most pups 20-49 pounds
Large: for pups over 50 pounds
If you feel like you might be between sizes we recommend sizing up. We also recommend sizing up if your dog is a determined chewer and/or has large jowls (talking to you boxers, bulldogs, pitties, etc).
When will I be billed?
You will be billed for your first box as soon as you sign up. After that, your billing date will be the 1st of the month. To make sure you have enough time in between your boxes to enjoy all your toys and treats, if you signed up on or after the 21st your next box will be billed on the 10th month, and then future months will be billed on the 1st of the month. If there is a better day of the month to bill you then we can help make that adjustment. Contact our Happy team so we can help! Reach out to [email protected] or use our live chat on our website.
What does durability mean?
When we talk about durability, we're talking about how long a toy lasts when it encounters a dog. But it gets more complicated from there. One thing we've learned since BARK's came into existence is that no two dogs – and no two dog people – think about durability in the same way.
One dog's everlasting gobstopper is another dog's popping soap bubble. And even if a toy lasts the same amount of time for two dogs, their humans will have different opinions. "It lasted 30 minutes?! Amazing!" vs "I can't believe it broke after 4 months. Garbage!"
Super Chewer FAQs
How does Super Chewer think about durability?
For Super Chewer, durability isn't the point: fun is. For some dogs, having fun requires durable toys. We're committed to creating toys that challenge dogs, entertain them, and facilitate wonderful shared adventures with their humans.
When we start designing a toy for a Super Chewer, we know a few things already: the dog is strong, the dog is determined, and the dog loves to chomp on stuff. And their human is probably looking for something that can withstand their dog's love and affection better than conventional fabric toys.
So we're looking for materials and shapes that will be robust during play with determined dogs without compromising our commitment to fun.
The point isn't to make an indestructible toy. If we wanted to make a toy that no dog could ever destroy, we'd just ship a bunch of bricks. But that wouldn't be fun.
Instead of aiming for "indestructible," we work to create assortments of toys that cover a range of different durabilities (and other characteristics!) so that we can tailor each box to the individual dog's needs. A Super Chewer toy shouldn't last forever. But it should last for as long as your dog wants it to. Because that's fun.
How durable is SOLID NYLON?
Solid nylon is crazy tough, and it's the go-to material for pleasing the strongest and most determined dogs in our pack. When a dog destroys everything, we find that solid nylon offers them the most challenge. It's hard and resilient, but still softer than your dog's teeth (tooth marks are good and normal!) – perfect for the dog who likes to really settle in and gnaw on something for a while.
Because it's so hard, we don't recommend it for vigorous activities, just because tossing a nylon toy is a great way to break your TV (we've learned this the hard way in our own homes). Nylon is pretty darned hard – that's why we make toys out of it! – and we've noticed that sometimes determined chewers can cause chips or cracks in teeth if the dog doesn't take it easy. We don't want this to happen, so if your dog is especially aggressive while chewing, you'll want to limit how much time they're able to spend with the nylon toys. The nature of solid nylon also requires careful supervision because a very strong dog can break it eventually, causing potentially-sharp fragments and splinters. You really have to work to make it happen, but it's something to watch out for. If these sharp edges and burrs develop on the main body of the toy, you can use sandpaper or a file to smooth them down safely. Discard any piece that your dog breaks off the main body of the toy. Always always supervise your dog when they're chewing on anything, including solid nylon toys.
How durable is RUBBER?
We love using rubber to make our toys because it gives us so many ways to change things for different dog needs and play preferences. We can make this rubber bouncier, that rubber harder, this rubber softer to chew, that rubber scented like bacon, and so on! So many possibilities!
We offer rubbers in a range of durabilities so that all of the dogs in our pack can find their exact right bite. The perfect bouncing ball, the most fun chew toy, and more in every box.
Our rubber toys come in many different shapes to give dogs variety (which is super important). Depending on how determined your dog is, some shapes will be more or less difficult to break into smaller pieces. Our rubber toys are tough, but intentionally not indestructible, so if you ever see your dog breaking up rubber toys into smaller pieces, it's time to take the toy (or at least those small pieces) away. Always supervise your dog when they're chewing on anything, including rubber toys.
How durable is ROPE?
Rope is a classic dog toy material, and the dogs in our pack love playing games of tug-of-war with a good rope toy. Woven rope has excellent tensile strength – that's how strong a material is when it's under tension, like during a tug game – but isn't indestructible. If your dog likes to gnaw and tear at rope instead of playing games of tug, you might find that rope has a short lifespan. By plucking and tearing away the smaller fibers in the rope, a determined dog can turn a rope toy into a pile of fiber.
If you know your dog likes to shred rope apart instead of tugging, you can always cut the rope portion off of the larger toy and dispose. Toys with rope in Super Chewer boxes are always intended for active play, not idle chewing, so your dog needs a human involved. It takes two to play tug-of-war, after all.
How durable is WOVEN NYLON STRAP?
When it's time for games of tug-o-war, the pups in our pack love woven nylon straps. We choose these straps for toys for the same reason adventure equipment companies build their backpacks and climbing harnesses around 'em – they're light, strong, and long-lived. Woven nylon is resistant to abrasion and also has excellent tensile strength – that's how strong a material is when it's under tension, like during a tug game – but isn't indestructible.
If you know your dog likes to shred nylon straps apart instead of tugging, you can always cut the strap portion off of the larger toy and dispose. Toys with straps in Super Chewer boxes are always intended for active play, not idle chewing, so your dog needs a human involved. It takes two to play tug-of-war, after all.
How durable is FABRIC?
Our woven fabrics are the toughest textiles for dogs, and the pups in our pack love the texture of fabric over even tougher core materials. All of our fabric toys are fluff-free and lined with tougher materials for reinforcement (think meshes and rubber mats).
How durable is FABRIC-COVERED RUBBER?
We know that some dogs love ripping apart toys, and we think it's a darned shame for shredding to signal the end of playtime. That's why we make some toys with two layers: a tough-but-tearable fabric cover, and a solid core of rubber or nylon. With these covered toys, your dog's new favorite toy always gets an encore.
The fabrics we choose for covering are the toughest textiles for dogs, and the pups in our pack love the texture of fabric over even tougher core materials. These tough fabrics are meant for your dog to rip off (if that's their jam), but it is up to humans (that means you!) to safely dispose of this torn-off fabric during play. These tough fabrics are good for shredding, but terrible for swallowing. Don't let your dog eat them!
Our pack has your back
We know that every dog is different, which is why every Super Chewer box can be different too. Tell us what your dog likes, dislikes, and LOVES and we'll make sure that their next delivery has the exact right bite.
You've got an obsessed tennis ball-chaser? We've got super-bouncy fetch toys that go the extra mile. A determined chewer with jaws of steel? Seriously tough nylon toys are in their future. Allergic to yak? We've got your back.
Super Chewer's support is provided by a team of real humans with Super Chewers of their own – we get it. When you email, chat. or text us, we'll work to make sure that your dog is getting the most out of their subscription.
