about

Following Meg Remy’s ‘Dream Piano’ lathe cut, BÉING Records returns with another archival excavation from the underbelly of post-2000s Weird Toronto. ‘Cynthia’ b/w ‘Natasha’ (BÉG003) by Actual Water is a skeletal funk artifact, dusted loose from an unpublished Stillepost thread—issued in a 20-copy lathe cut 7” edition (housed in vintage, field-sourced Toronto Disc Jockey Unlimited Co. sleeves), or paywalled digital via Bandcamp (previews now live).

Originally recorded in 2009 in a jam-space haze, Cynthia b/w Natasha captures Actual Water—the now-departed, shape-shifting art-punk unit centered around Tony Price (Maximum Exposure) and Gary Pooni—mid-mutation: garage-rock primitivism giving way to eerie ambient lock-grooves. These are raw, loop-forward instrumentals; sparse drums and guitar fragments blink to an obscure internal pulse like busted streetlights. Blown-out no wave and ESG-indebted urban genre-agnosticism hint toward the crypto-funk sensibility Price would later refine into the late-night textures of his Maximum Exposure imprint.

Side A’s Cynthia is previously unreleased: a ghostly vignette salvaged from an abandoned attempt to craft a Donuts-style suite of miniature punk grooves—each track a loop clipped from invented genre detritus and filtered through AW’s signature, willful naïveté. Like ESG’s UFO refracted through dust and drywall, Cynthia loops on its own unease—part basement funk, part VHS ambiance. On the flip, Natasha, first buried on the 2010 cassette-only Leon (an early Telephone Explosion release), makes its vinyl debut. This is Actual Water at their most rhythm-first and least song-bound—a sound with no ambition beyond the loop itself, waiting to be called music.

With its latest releases, BÉING Records attempts to recall a few coordinates on the map of local Toronto music before the digital hyper-compression that foisted all recorded sound onto a single register of distribution. These earlier models embodied radically different modes of cultural memory. Crack the seal on BÉG003 and feel the pulse of a contingent Toronto, still fluttering at the brink of forgetting.
