13K views · 1.9K reactions | Wyandottes are one of my favorite breeds! They are a hardy robust no nonsense chicken, but there are a few things you should know before adding them to your flock: 🐓Wyandotte hens may want to be mamas, and can go broody but make excellent and attentive mothers when they do. 🐓Wyandottes do well in the cold and are truly one of the best breeds you can choose for a cold climate. This is in large part due to their somewhat flat rose combs that fit closely against their heads. They are also super fluffy with a lot more down than most other breeds which really helps them insulate in the cold. 🐓Wyandottes may need extra care in the heat. Small rose combs are wonderful in the winter, but not so desirable in the heat of summer. Since a chickens comb helps them regulate their body temperatures during hot weather, Wyandottes aren’t as good at this because their combs are so small and close to their head. Making sure they have access to shade and cool water in the heat is crucial. 🐓Wyandottes are usually not lap birds in my experience. They are calm and friendly and may become fond of their keepers and even follow you around, however they may not necessarily like to be handled. 🐓Wyandottes can be noisier then the average chicken and can be very chatty and vocal. Personally, I actually love it. However, if you are an urban chicken keeper this breed may be a deal breaker for you. 🐓Wyandottes need help keeping those fluffy vent feathers clean. They will inevitably get poop stuck in those cute fluffy feathers and you will have to clean it off. 🐓Wyandottes can be raised in a confined run but never in close confinement. They will get bossy if they don’t have ample space. They love to free range though, and are natural foragers. Since they are large birds, they need plenty of space for exercise if they are kept in a run. They don’t tend to be flighty probably because they are heavier birds. 🐓Wyandottes do well in a mixed flock, but do better if there is more than one Wyandotte in their flock. I have noticed they liked to hang out with other Wyandottes. All this said, Wyandottes are a wonderful addition to backyard flocks if right for you!❤️🩹🐓 #wyandottes | 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 | 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬
