Marie Antoinette’s famous necklace is a scandalous piece of jewelry attributed to one of France’s last queens. Although the necklace was designed for Marie Antoinette, its high cost led to a major crisis and fueled public outrage at the time. This story is often cited as one of the contributing factors to the French Revolution.

Before she was beheaded, the queen’s diamonds and pearls were sent to Austria. Now they are on public display — for just a few days — at Sotheby’s.
