The third nerve division or V3 of the trigeminal nerve is the mandibular nerve, which is a short main trunk formed by the merger of a smaller anterior trunk and a larger posterior trunk within
the infratemporal fossa deep to the base of the skull
but before the nerve passes through the foramen ovale of the sphenoid bone. Mandibular Nerve, Maxillary Nerve, Trigeminal Nerve, Sphenoid Bone, Nasal Cavity, The Nerve, Nerve, Cavities, Nervous System

The mandibular nerve then joins with the ophthalmic nerve and maxillary nerve to form the trigeminal ganglion of the trigeminal nerve. The mandibular nerve is the largest of the three nerve divisions that form the trigeminal nerve; the mandibular nerve is also a mixed nerve with both afferent and efferent nerves. It contains the entire efferent part of the trigeminal nerve.
