Fyrish Village on the Courentyne, Guyana is one of the more than 100 villages that were established by formerly enslaved Africans after slavery was abolished in the former British Guiana on August 1, 1838. After a few years of working as free people, groups of Africans pooled their money and bought abandoned plantations from their former owners.
