Planting a tray of grass seed. Chickens eating grown grass.

I want my hens to have the benefits of eating grass so I grow a bit in small trays. It’s so easy to grow grass, fill a tray with soil, pack it down, then sprinkle grass seeds over the surface, then water regularly and soon enough I have a lush grass tray. It’s fun giving the hens exposure to different foods and foraging to keep them engaged and healthy. Have a go at growing something for your chickens! Or what are you already growing for them? Chicken Feeding Trough DIY

The Hen Feeding Frenzy! Feeding Trough We made this feeding trough, photo below, out of scraps around the farm, a gutter piece and some scrap wood, then glued and screwed it all together. Pretty simple really! The chickens love it, and so do the hundreds of weavers and sparrows we are now feeding. DIY Fodder System for Animals

I’ve recently become enamored with the concept of growing fodder for animals. Not only is it simple enough for even the smallest-scale homesteader to accomplish, but it’s also incredibly cost-effective. If you’re needing an economical, highly nutritious way to feed your homestead critters, a small-scale fodder system may be just what you’re looking for. I’m […]

Vertical Vegetable Garden with Grass Filled Trays

Cake trays from Dollar general, scrap wood and a $7 pump at harbor freight, a timer that I had laying around (you can see it on the bottom left) kicks in and runs about 30 minutes 2x a day. Same water, but we've changed it out 2x so far... Also a larger bin on bottom to hold the water $3.50... So about $20 wrapped up in it. I used untreated wheat seeds. .. put about 1/4 inch in the tray, dumped them in a jar or bucket with water with a splash of bleach, soak over night and pour back into…

Growing Grass Inside for Small Flock Winter Treat Feeding | Chicken garden, Chickens, Backyard chicken farming

Grass is such a wonderful source of protein for chickens and other barnyard animals, but it can be a bit scarce in the winter months. So today I'm going to show you how to grow it in a small container inside your home or garage. For small flocks, it should be more than enough to provide fresh grass clippings as treats (not the primary food source) for the entire season. It's so easy, and your critters will love you for it! The trick is to use rye grass seed, which is a naturally growing…

Virginia Coop and Run in 2025 | Chickens backyard, Backyard chicken farming, Keeping chickens

"We should get some chickens," I said, not expecting we'd actually succumb. Suddenly, we were single-minded. Chickens. We had questions, and plenty of them. How long do chicks need a heat lamp? Chickens don't have lungs? Is cattle fencing...

The Benefits of Wheatgrass for Everyone

As we juice two trays of wheatgrass a day (one average, unless someone is sick, then we make more), we always have 24 trays growing in rotation. Our 16 year old puppy appreciates it! Everyone benefits -- we drink it, the dogs and cats drink it, then the chickens get the cut-offs, and the geese eat the remaining grass to the roots. Then we turn the spent mats over in the compost; the worms just love them. It's the perfect worm bedding.
