Liminal space forest

Level 39 is a series of twisting dirt paths with an expansive oak forest covering both sides. This level is finite, spanning an approximate 300 kilometers (190 miles) across in a circular shape. Level 39 does not have a day-night cycle, and is instead stuck in a constant state of late dusk. Despite normally appearing during the time which Level 39 constantly emulates, celestial bodies have yet to be observed within Level 39.

If you’ve visited a mostly empty mall close to closing time or a hotel that is almost completely vacant, you no doubt have been struck with a feeling of creeping unease, possibly mixed with some deja vu. You would not be alone in this feeling, and the ubiquity of smartphones these days means that internet users are documenting all the places that unsettle them.

If you ever find yourself in a space that brings up a feeling of ‘not knowing what’s up but something’s definitely up’ you may have encountered a liminal space.

I recently saw the article on Bored Panda about liminal spaces and it is something that has been a personal interest for me as well for a long time. Looking at some of the photographs, I do think I sought after the feeling of liminality in them.
