See Philippe! It's just a step by step process. My number one rule when carving waxes....(or doing almost any complicated task)....is: Start with what you know! With rings for example....it is the finger size....and I start with a block of wax that is VERY "squared up"...this is necessary because most of the layout work (using machinist's squares, dividers and protractors, etc. ) depends on true and flat surfaces.
