This 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser is a US-market FJ40 that was refurbished by Retro Designs of Concord, North Carolina, after it was acquired by the seller from a friend in 2019. The ~$37k project involved body and frame repairs, refreshing its interior, and servicing its wiring, suspension, brakes, 3.9-liter F inline-six, and 4×4 drivetrain, which has a four-speed manual transmission. The truck is refinished in green with a canvas soft-top over gray upholstery, and it has power steering, disc brakes, Old Man Emu dampers, 15″ steel wheels, Bestop seats, and a custom sound system with a Bluetooth-capable Kenwood stereo. This FJ40 is offered with refurbishment photos, service records from current ownership, and a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.
Before the truck was refinished in 2020, the grille, hood, windshield cowl and frame, front fenders, rockers, floors, and doors were repaired, and a fabricated rear body crossmember and quarter panels were fitted. The body mounts, window felts, and windshield gasket were replaced, as well. In July 2022, the hood was refinished, and a replacement windshield and soft top were installed.
The 15″ steel wheels have bright hubcaps and are mounted with 31×10.50″ BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. A power steering kit and replacement tie rod ends were installed in November 2019, and the suspension was lifted with Old Man Emu components. Four-wheel disc brakes provide stopping power.
Trimmed in gray upholstery, Bestop front bucket seats and a forward-facing rear bench are fitted over bedliner-coated floors, and the cabin has a clinometer, a Tuffy center console, USB ports, a Bluetooth-capable Kenwood stereo, and Memphis Audio speakers.
The refinished steering wheel fronts a Dakota Digital instrument cluster, which has a 120-mph speedometer and an odometer showing 1,800 miles driven since the truck was returned to service.
The valves were adjusted and the valve cover was refinished for the 3.9-liter F inline-six, which has an aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan. The starter was replaced in January 2021.
Rear frame rust was repaired during the project, and replacement rails were installed before the chassis was refinished. The driveshafts were rebuilt in 2019, and the rear transfer case seal was replaced along with the drivetrain fluids. The clutch master cylinder and hydraulic lines were replaced in February 2020, and the clutch slave cylinder was replaced in October 2021.
