"[Merrick] Garland gave the Supreme Court all the time in the world to deliver its wholly ahistorical—and full of more shit than a dog park on top of a horse barn on top of Donald Trump’s diaper at the end of a Taco Trump day—decision that the President is…well, a king. One imagines if Ben Franklin were around, he would’ve found a way to conduct lightning into the Supreme Court building that day."

"Essentially, all you need to know is Alito, Roberts, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Barrett would’ve supported King George in 1776. He had absolute immunity after all! Tax away! Bring more guns to the Boston Massacre next time!"
"Can the Supreme Court stop the monster they unleashed? Are a majority of justices now grasping the danger they have caused from a man who thinks the law does not apply to him and who seeks total power? Or do you think this tariff ruling was not a change of heart, but a one-off response to Trump’s deployment of the emergency powers act?"

"Hours before the court’s ruling came news of the US economy slowing down to a degree much greater than economists expected, because consumers pulled back so sharply. They did so, of course, because Trump’s tariffs scheme amounted to the biggest tax increase of the last three decades, according to the Tax Foundation."

"As many commentators have noted, we are not on the cusp of a constitutional crisis in the United States, we are in an extended vigil for our critically ill Constitution. The coming week might be the point where Trumpism takes the patient off life support and shoots it in the head, however."

"It will all come down to whether Trump outright tells the Supreme Court that he can do as he pleases regardless of any ruling or whether he sends his hatchet men out to announce a new phony legal pretext that allows Trump to do as he pleases on tariffs, hence restarting the litigation clock."

"And that will put it back in the court of the hapless John Roberts, who is certainly an accessory to the murder of the Constitution, where he will have to decide whether to go along with the clock restart and wait another year to say once again, 'No, that’s illegal' or whether he will issue a general stay on all tariff setting by Trump until the US Congress fulfills its Constitutionally proper role."

"Let me put it in perspective: last year was the worst year for economic growth in the U.S. in the last 9 years, aside from during the COVID pandemic in 2020.
These numbers matter because tariffs do not function the way Trump has long claimed. They are not paid by foreign governments. They are borne by American companies and passed on to American consumers."

"The Supreme Court told him to quit stealing from Congress and reaffirmed its own ability to engage in judicial review. It is a very important decision, perhaps the most important we’ve seen from the Court since it went the opposite direction and expanded presidential power in the criminal immunity case. Finally, they’ve pumped the brakes on the runaway presidency."

Today's Supreme Court ruling atttacking Trump's tariffs has brought Leonard Leo, former v-p of the Federalist Society, into the news. Leo is the kingmaker of the current Supreme Court. Leo has stacked the court with hard-right Catholics closely tied to the right-wing Catholic cult Opus Dei, to which Leo belongs.
As Lucian K. Truscott notes, Leo, was behind the tariff lawsuit that Trump lost.

In light of the re-emergence of Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society in the news today, I find this posting by Will Sommer yesterday hilarious:
"After months of turmoil and staff resignations, the conservative Heritage Foundation is hiring a former gay porn actor known for his work in such films as 'Jerk-Off Race.'"

"According to Donald Trump, several Supreme Court justices are FOOLS, 'LAPDOGS,' and 'very unpatriotic.' I agree — although I think we have different justices in mind.
In his press conference Trump also asserted both that the Court’s ruling against his tariffs was disastrous and that the Court had affirmed his right to do whatever he wants on tariffs. Not sure where the second part came from."
~ Paul Krugman
"The ruling was in fact scathing and said clearly that Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was a usurpation of taxation authority that belongs to Congress:
'We are therefore skeptical that in IEEPA — and IEEPA alone — Congress hid a delegation of its birth-right power to tax …'
"It was all about arbitrary power."
"Trump has reveled in being able to slap tariffs on Brazil for daring to put Jair Bolsonaro on trial for a failed insurrection, being able to threaten France and Germany with tariffs for getting in the way of his attempt to seize Greenland, and of course giving tariff waivers to businesses that help him build his ballroom."
"The desire for that arbitrary power is why he went for IEEPA despite warnings that it might well be ruled unconstitutional.
And alternatives to IEEPA don’t give him that much arbitrary power.
No wonder, then, that he’s throwing a huge temper tantrum."
"Here’s the thing: It was obvious that they were illegal from the minute Trump imposed them. The Constitution very clearly assigns that sort of power exclusively to Congress. The tariffs were an arbitrary exercise of power well outside the rule of law.
But the mainstream news reporters covering Trump just couldn’t bring themselves to say so."

"In most democracies Trump’s reckless and wild abuse of power through his tariffs would cause the government to fall or the leader to be removed.
The imposition of these harmful tariffs against the will of Congress, the courts, our allies, and our people are clear grounds for his removal."

The penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands will be relieved now that the Supreme Court has ruled against Trumps tariffs.
I guess this could be considered a reaction to the #SCOTUS ruling on #tariffs∶
#Trump told reporters on Friday that he was considering a limited #military #strike to pressure #Iran into a deal. “I guess I can say I am considering that,” he said at the start of a meeting with #governors at the White House.

#Trump is speaking after #SCOTUS rules against his #tariffs
"The Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs is deeply disappointing. And I'm ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed for not having the courage to do what's right for our country," said Trump.
#law #economy #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics
#Trump said foreign countries are
celebrating the ruling, but it won't last long.
"Foreign countries that have been ripping us off for years are ecstatic. They're so happy, & they're dancing in the streets, but they won't be dancing for long, that I can assure you," said Trump.
He said, WITHOUT EVIDENCE, that #SCOTUS has been "swayed by foreign interests & a political movement that is far smaller than people would ever think."
#law #economy #tariffs #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics
#Trump said that "other alternatives will now be used to replace the ones [#tariffs] that the court incorrectly rejected."
"We have alternatives," Trump said, "could be more money. We'll take in more money & we'll be a lot stronger for it." — if that were at all true, he would have used those methods first.
#law #economy #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics #SCOTUS
#Trump said didn't make sense to him, big surprise.
"I can destroy the trade, I can destroy the country. I'm even allowed to impose a foreign country-destroying embargo. I can embargo. *I can do anything I want*, but I can't charge $1 because that's not what it says," he said.
"How ridiculous is that?"
You are what is ridiculous, idiot.
#law #economy #tariffs #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics #SCOTUS
#Trump quoted Justice Brett #Kavanaugh's dissent, which said the decision might not substantially constrain a president's ability to order #tariffs in the future.
"He's right. In fact, I can charge much more than I was charging," Trump said.
The 3 dissenting justices in the 6-3 ruling were Kavanaugh, who was appointed by Trump to the court, & 2 other conservative justices, Samuel #Alito & #ClarenceThomas.
#law #economy #tariffs #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics #SCOTUS
"Today, I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over & above our normal tariffs already being charged," #Trump said referring to section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 — which could let the admin continue its tariffs without #IEEPA emergency powers.
He also said all “national security” tariffs under Section 301 remain in place & several “investigations” will be initiated.
#law #economy #tariffs #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics #Trump #SCOTUS
#Trump thanked Justices #ClarenceThomas, Samuel #Alito & Brett #Kavanaugh by name “for their strength & wisdom & love of our country” for dissenting from the majority.
Of the other conservatives justices who voted to knock down his tariffs — Chief Justice #JohnRoberts & Justices #AmyConeyBarrett & Neil #Gorsuch — Trump said, “they’re just being fools & lapdogs for the RINOs & radical left Democrats.”
Trump said they were “very unpatriotic & disloyal to our Constitution.”
Asked about the #refund process for the tariff revenue, #Trump said the #US could end up being in court "the next 5 years."
"They take months & months to write an opinion, & they don't even discuss that point. We've taken in hundreds of billions of dollars, not millions, hundreds of billions of dollars [false]. And so I said, 'Well, what happens to all the money that we took in?' It wasn't discussed," said Trump.
"I guess it has to get litigated for the next 2 years."
#Trump said the 10% global #tariffs he just announced will be for a period of about 5 months.
"During that period of about 5 months, we are doing the various investigation necessary to put fair tariffs, or tariffs period, on other countries," Trump told reporters.
Asked whether the duties will be for only 150 days or indefinitely, Trump said "we have a right to do pretty much what we want to do[?], but we're going to charge it starting effectively. I think it's 3 days from now."
Despite the rebuke from #SCOTUS, #Trump is scoffing at the need to get #Congress involved in enacting #tariffs.
“I don’t have to,” Trump ignorantly said when asked why wouldn’t he just work with lawmakers on tariffs. “I have the right to do tariffs, & I’ve always had the right to do tariffs.” Nope.
The majority ruled that Congress has the power to write #tax policy, which includes tariffs.
The man is a moron.
#law #economy #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics
At this point he really isn’t making any sense.
For months, #Trump warned that if his #tariffs were struck down, it would be a “disaster” for the country & it “would literally destroy the United States of America.”
But today, Trump repeatedly projected a sunny economic future for the US & dismissed the idea that the country would face ruin, as he predicted.
He said the ruling gave “certainty” & said “I think you’re going to see the country get much stronger because of it.”
#Trump also said the alternative paths he will pursue to try to impose tariffs, while a much more drawn out process, will now “get us more money. And I think it’s going to be great.”
🤣“I read very well. Great comprehension,” Trump said.
Trump said that, when it came to the tariffs case, “I read everything there is to read. And I said, ‘Can’t lose this case.’”
But #SCOTUS did in fact rule against Trump’s #tariffs.
#law #economy #tariffs #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics
#Trump is clearly fuming at the 2 justices he nominated in his first term who sided against his #tariffs.
“I think it’s an embarrassment to their families, if you want to know the truth. The two of them,” Trump said of #Gorsuch & #AmyConeyBarrett throwing a bit of #StochasticTerrorism into the mix.
He said, “their decision was terrible.”
#law #economy #inflation #affordability #CostOfLiving #geopolitics #SCOTUS
In another display of pettiness & stupidity, #Trump said the justices who voted against his #tariffs are still “barely” invited to Tuesday’s #SOTU address.
But he added that “honestly I couldn’t care less if they come, OK?”
The president gives the State of the Union before a joint session of #Congress, but does NOT issue invitations to the speech, aside from his special guests.
The #House speaker actually invites the president to give the address in the first place.
