Chinese state media has amplified a viral story about a Tesla Model Y that lost power on a highway despite showing 72 km of remaining range, as Tesla's sales in China plummet 45 per cent year-on-year. The incident, reported by state-controlled China.com, has sparked debate about EV safety and battery accuracy across Chinese social media. With over 1.5 million Tesla vehicles in China, the company's 2025 sales dropped to 626,000 units from 657,000 in 2024. electrek.co/2026/02/17/chinese

Heads up: there's body shaming and ableism in what follows. [SENSITIVE CONTENT]John Backus titled his 1977 Turing Award lecture to the ACM Can Programming Be Liberated from the von Neumann Style? A Functional Style and Its Algebra of Programs. Section 1 is titled:
            1. Conventional Programming Languages: Fat and Flabby
            In the abstract, he states:
Conventional programming languages are growing ever more enormous, but not stronger. Inherent defects at the most basic level cause them to be both fat and weak: their primitive word-at-a-time style of programming inherited from their common ancestor--the von Neumann computer, their close coupling of semantics to state transitions
            and later
For twenty years programming languages have been steadily progressing toward their present condition of obesity
doubling down on the body shaming and ableism. He clarifies later in the lecture that what he means by "von Neumann programming language" is one with assignment statements and manipulation of variables. Applicative (i.e. functional) languages are what he means to contrast with these stateful languages.

Several figures of that time, including Peter Landin of "the next 700 programming languages" fame, were unashamedly in love with the lambda calculus and the prospect that it could usher in a full algebraization of computer programming. Backus is interesting because here in a high-profile lecture he's explicitly referring to issues of state as making programming languages "fat" and "flabby". I suspect many of his peers felt similarly even if they weren't using such nakedly ableist metaphors.

I came across another functional programming article about strategies for "managing side effects".

For the uninitiated, what are typically called side effects include:

                                    • Input/output (to the screen, to/from a disk drive, to a printer, to/from the internet, etc.)
                                    • Relatedly, interaction (with the mouse, with the keyboard)
                                    • Statefulness ("remembering" data in RAM)
                                    • Parallelism (doing more than one thing at a time) and asynchrony (doing things out of order)
In other words, what writing on functional programming refers to as a side effect is typically what a program is for. Without these "side" effects, the program would be a complicated way to make your CPU warmer. Without "side" effects, you would have no way to impact what the program is doing: not through the keyboard or mouse, not through the contents of files, not through values in the computer's memory. Nor would you have the ability to observe what the computer is doing: not on the screen, not in logs or other files, not by observing the computer's memory. You would have no way to interrupt the program, either, since doing that would require asychrony.

In what sense, then, are they "side"? And what on earth is being "managed"? Isn't that what we mean by "programming"?

                                                      @kkarhan Basically, it’s just:

“Fuck you, let’s keep something completely outdated alive.”

On my main machine I use X11 as screensharing works but on Wayland it doesn’t. (It’s Gentoo, probably my fault why it doesn’t work.) I use Wayland elsewhere and it’s fine.

A lot of people I follow support XLibre which is concerning because of these:

“Together we'll make X great again!”, it’s anti-DEI stance and their whole thing against big tech… hosted on GitHub, owned by M$. 🤦

Feb. 16, 1978 -- forty eight years ago today -- the first public dial-up bulletin board system went online.

Wired: "1978: Ward Christensen and Randy Suess launch the first public dialup bulletin board system. The two unleash the kernel of what would eventually spawn the world wide web, countless online messaging systems..."

                                                          wired.com/2010/02/0216cbbs-fir

I got my first modem in the summer of 1986, a Prometheus ProModem 1200A (modem on a card) for the Apple II. The first BBS I logged in to was OxGate, an RBBS/RCPM system the phone number of which I still can remember (my earliest BBS software -- firmware-based on that modem card -- had no phone book). I used BBSs avidly until sometime in 1994, when I subscribed to a local ISP's (Widomaker of Williamsburg, VA) dial-up modem-based PPP service that brought TCP/IP to my 486 PC with Windows 3.1. I could then browse the web from home, and that was basically the end of BBSing for me -- for the moment, anyway.

For those interested in experiencing this early form of online community, there are many BBSs online right now, accessible via telnet on systems old and new. I've enjoyed getting back into BBSing this way, especially when using vintage systems to login.

Most any computer can do it, today. Tips on how: bytecellar.com/bbsing

I decided to merge my #Scheme react-like declarative GUI framework (schemacs ui), even though the back-end isn’t completely bug-free yet. (It is still an experimental software project, so the main branch is the development branch).

Though it is written in pure #R7RS “small” Scheme, the only GUI back-end currently available is for Guile users who go to the trouble to install Guile-GI all on their own.

If Guile-GI is installed, put on your safety goggles and run this command in the Guile REPL:

                                                                (load "./main-gui.scm")

I haven’t tried getting it to work in a Guix shell for almost a year now, but my last attempt did not go well (it crashed while initializing Gtk). To anyone who wants to try the GUI, I am sorry to inconvenience you, but I’m afraid I just have to ask you to please install Guile-GI yourself using the old-fashioned ./configure && make && make install method. If anyone happens to be able to get it to work in a Guix shell, please let me know, or open a PR on the Codeberg Git repository.

The only examples for how to use (schemacs ui) are in the test suite and the Schemacs Debugger. The only documentation so far are the comments in the source code, though I did try to be very thorough with comments.

The “Debugui” debugger works, but only has one single feature: the eval-expression command, which is bound to M-: (Alt-Colon). This command works the same as in #Emacs but you enter a Scheme language command instead. The #EmacsLisp interpreter is not yet connected to the GUI.

Now that this is merged, I am going to work on a few tasks in the Emacs Lisp interpreter that have been pending for more than a few weeks now. Then, back to creating new features in the GUI toward the goal of making it a useful program editor. And also, of course, writing some more documentation.

Since the release of the new Montage M, Yamaha has dropped support entirely for the first gen model. Its audio interface driver only supports up to 14, but still works under 15.0. I receive daily warning messages that further OS updates will break it. Yamaha has stopped development on the driver.

To complicate things, I have an Intel for which will be dropping support in the near future. It was and is only a matter of time. Due to the driver support issue I am forced to keep my Mac at OS 15.0.1. But wait, there's more...

If I upgrade my OS, then I risk breaking the driver and thus lose the capability of and over . I use both the analog outputs and the USB, including feeding DAW tracks back into the for additional real time processing. My entire workflow, which I have developed since investing in the MacPro, *will* break and projects which I have started will not be completed. Period.

if that isn't painful enough, the New Yamaha Montage M8X is $5,000. While this is an amazing machine and does include a wealth of new features I'd immediately use (including a faster and more robust engine), these costs of both a new and new are staggeringly high.

If Yamaha hadn't dropped support for its driver, I'd be fine continuing to use a last generation instrument.

It does not matter what kind of DE you are using in terms of GPU performance.

What really matters, if you're on a laptop, is battery life. The result of @thelinuxEXP research shows that Wayland is better at maintaining longer batter life compared to X11 session.
