I'm glad generative artificial "intelligence" was not a thing yet during the vast majority of my career. A number of realizations arose while exploring generative Large Language Models…
Generative AI is based on massive theft from creatives, without consent, credit or compensation. Using gen-AI is asking a chatbot to spit out the combined efforts of ripped-off creatives. It is industrializing and devaluing human expression, artistry and craftsmanship. Creatives are losing their jobs and motivation because tech corporations unscrupulously absorb and exploit their work. If you appreciate art, support the artists, not the thieves of their labor.
Tech corporations are building more and more huge data centers for AI processing, consuming lots of internet bandwidth, energy, water and more, increasing scarcity, prices and emissions, degrading the already fragile environment.
Unless you're using a fully local AI configuration, every bit of data you submit contributes to the power and reach of corporations and governments, decreasing your privacy and security.
Generative AI enables deepfakes that are widely used for abuse, deception, cybercrime, misinformation and propaganda, polluting justice, science advancement and news report credibility.

Buddy. I've written COBOL. I spent several years working almost daily with a 3-million-line monstrosity of a COBOL program. I was working on another app that interfaced with it, but in that work I occasionally had to read the code and in a few cases modify it. Granted I haven't spent as much time looking at the leaked Claude Code source code (and won't lol), but nevertheless I confidently declare that Claude Code is worse. "Spaghetti code" doesn't come close to describing this thing.

I was helping an open-source app become more #accessible yesterday and we ran into the problem that it looks like #screenReader Orca has a bit of a tendency to crash when exposed to webkitGTK applications. I only learned about this feature a few days ago, and it has instantly improved my quality of (virtual) life. It feels more comfortable and natural than C-x o, and now I use it constantly and without thinking about it. I stumbled upon this feature when creating a new Emacs init.el for an Apple laptop.
I am too lazy to try to keep one single Emacs config for all of my devices. I mean, I could, but unless I am replacing my personal daily driver (where I would copy my entire home directory, including Emacs config), I usually just start a new config every time I get a new computer, especially a work computer. And when I do, I gradually set the configuration variables that I need as I go along, searching the documentation when I can’t remember how to do things.
I’m not the kind of guy who declares “ #EmacsBankruptcy “. I always keep my init.el file simple, only for configuring modes and global variables, and nothing else. I keep my personal macros in other files. So recreating my Emacs init.el for each new computer is one of the few chances I have to stumble across new configuration variables I hadn’t seen before in the documentation.

Apparently, to the wire, we’re a legacy Linux box that’s been quietly humming for days.
