                      From yesterdays walkies in the forest behind Mum's neighbourhood.

                      Prettily blue photo of setting sunlight cast through the sieve of a stand of Scot's pine and leafless deciduous undergrowth. The foreground is a flat plane of the end of a road, with tracks of tires dug into the pure white snow. The blue shadows of the trees dip into the tracks and footprints, like graphite into the impressions of writing on a fresh piece of notepad paper. A cool frosty haze sits gently atop everything, the branches of the perhaps even 100 year old trees heavily laden with snow and frost.

                                  Hmm, I don't think that will do anything. The chain just disappears between the agri tyre profile and won't even touch the ground 😆

                                  Another option are screw-in studs, which supposedly work well with thick rubber profiles like this. But only on ice, they'll do nothing on mud or loose snow. Hmm.

                                  Another stupid(?) idea is to weld some scrap metal together and bolt it to those 8 holes in the rim, with steel protruding outside past the tyre profile. Basically like this ancient farmall tractor.

                                                    The columnar Blushing Delight beside the house didn't need much. Just a few crossing branches.

                                                    The Northern Spy is a little more wild and I want it as tall as possible for shade and walking room. I took away one major leader on the north side. Next year Ill decide if I want to take it down to one leader.

Cold weather and fairly deep snow cover prevent outdoor gardening of any sort, and I sit here looking at all my seed packets and, in spite of all the postings about getting seeds started, I am resisting the urge to start anything yet here. Just. Too. Early. Must wait a few more weeks...

                                                                      Die Großwetterlage stellt sich in den kommenden Tagen gleich mehrfach um. Mit einem Temperatursprung steigen die Temperaturen zunächst kräftig an, bevor am Wochenende ein Temperatursturz den Regen wieder bis auf tiefere Lagen in Schnee übergehen lässt und so für winterliche Wetterverhältnisse sorgen kann. Doch bereits zum Rosenmontag erfolgt der nächste Temperatursprung und lässt den Niederschlag über dem Westen wieder in Regen übergehen, während weiter nach Osten Eisregen, gefrierender Regen, Schneeregen oder Schneefall gefährliche Glätte bringen kann. Der Winter weicht nicht und auch im weiteren Verlauf gibt es für den Winter weitere Möglichkeiten, sich über Deutschland bis auf das Flachland herab durchzusetzen. "Freunde des Frühlingswetters" müssen sich wohl in Geduld üben.

                                                                                                            Here's this week's data for Project Feeder Watch week number 15. Severe winter weather continues with VERY cold temps, high winds and lots of snow cover. We had 19 species and 116 individuals this week. Favorite sighting of the week was a very scruffy-looking Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker that stopped by several times. As always the Carolina Wrens continue to amaze me that they can survive this climate and still look feisty!

                                                                                                                                      Phone shots from a winter walk. My camera died today! Apparently a known defect with the new #Fujifilm X-E5 where the screws holding the strap attachment can come loose. Thankfully didn't fall off while I was carrying it and drop. However the now loose screw rattling around in the camera shorted it out and I lost all power. Had to make due with my Samsung.

                                                                                                                                        Currently 3°F in with a wind chill of about -20°F. Light lake effect snow, not more than an inch or two accumulation, but blowing and drifting. The zoo where I work has closed for the day due to the cold, so I've got the day off. I'm hunkering down for a quiet afternoon, with a warm blanket and relaxing music and a library book and some hot coffee, listening to the wind whistling around the house.

                                                                                                                                                                Got the tractor running with the diesel heater blowing hot air on the oil filter for half an hour. Went out to fetch some wood and it died. Diesel-gel blocking the filter. Despite maximum dose of anti-gel additive in the tank. Should've heated the tank as well 🤦‍♂️

                                                                                                                                                                Old sailor trick when your tank is full of crud, pull the hose off the filter and stick it into a bottle of good fuel.

                                                                                                                                                                        Snowshoe-packed a trail further into the bush. Yodelled and the old chickadees found us (the families seem to have their territories). How did we know it was them?
                                                                                                                                                                        They landed on us immediately 😂. And talked!
                                                                                                                                                                        Happy to see they have survived another year.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      Yesterday was a rare, windless winter day. Low sun and long shadows along Miller Creek in the Alaska Range.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        Pretty cold. Discoveries I made this morning:

                                                                                                                                                                                                        EVA rubber boots are no longer flexible and difficult to wear until your feet warm them up.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        LCD displays stop working.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        The fancy microcontroller thermometer had an integer overflow and showed +64°C when it was... I guess -31 or 32? 😆

                                                                                                                                                                                                        The -25°C winter wiper fluid is now solid, but it shouldn't damage the cars as it has contracted rather than expanded like water does.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        The barn cat is still alive and got warm water and leftover porridge.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        LRT reports -34°C in nearby Ukmergė and that diesel engines can't run on jelly. Apparently LPG vehicles had problems too, not enough Propane in the mix: lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2
