Dear fediverse, I need a recommendation. I've got a PC that I need to be able to turn on/off remotely. I know about WOL packets since I was 12 (I'm 40 now), but setting them up seems ridiculous. I do wonder if in all THESE MANY years has nothing simpler been created?

All it needs to do is to turn on/off my PC.

If nothing exists to do this in a simple manner, I might use my free laptop just to send the WOL packet internally through Zerotier. But keeping an additional computer on just to wake up another seems like defeating the purpose of what I'm trying to do.

I'm looking for replacement label printers - we used to use Dymo 450 but they were EOL'd a while back and the new software's a bin-fire. Any subsequent Dymos have DRM'd consumables so we can't use non-Dymo labels, cos Dymo are bastards.

Ideally we want something with a wired LAN interface, or that I can hook into CUPS on a Pi to network-print given a PDF. Must be able to take 1" and 1.5" label rolls.

Thanks to all of you who've contributed to this GoFundMe, plus sales of albums (https://1351.bandcamp.com/album/fragments-and-shatter/) and zines, we've got all three animals fully up-to-date with theirr vaccines and microchips, at a cost of $523.06.

Record-breaking ice storms and snowfall in New Jersey means that getting the animals to the vet happened later than we'd have liked, so we're now scrambling to book flights before the summer ticket price rise.

From our writing, transcription and translation work since we set this GFM up some seven (!) weeks ago, we've managed to save another 880€.

The vet is still holding onto the processing fee for our furry friends' travel permit, but we still need to get an estimate for their final pre-travel checkup - I'm mentally assuming $300 (we'll get that estimate ASAP).

If we were to book flights right now, we'd be looking at a cost of 1193€ for us and an estimated 300€ for the animals

That means we're still looking to raise around 900€. Money saved from our earnings mean that's less than our original GoFundMe estimate of 2000€.

We're also making contingency plans in case we can't get everything funded and booked in time. Hanging onto the money is fine - we can afford to live and have a dedicated account to save it in - but that would look as us travelling in October in order to get cheap air fees again.

I've been poking around in Letterboxd to see if I can tell it what streaming services I'm currently subscribed to.

It would be of value to me if I could tell it my subscriptions, and then filter movies by which I'm subscribed to. Can it do that?

No point in me using it otherwise, since I have my to-watch list elsewhere.

The hassle of picking a movie when I don't know if I have access to it is the biggest barrier for me getting back into a regular movie routine again. For awhile I got around this simply by renting after choosing from my list. But I'm short on extra cash at the moment, and that's not sustainable if I do it frequently.

(My local library doesn't have Kanopy/Hoopla.)

What's a good substitute for "Malted Milk Powder?"

I'm working on adapting a recipe that calls for malted milk powder (e.g. Carnation brand). The restriction is a gluten allergy. Malt is generally always malted barley, so naturally it's a no-go.

I need information (not money) to help out a friend in Switzerland. [Edited to add: they are a Swiss citizen.]

I have a friend in Montreux (Vaud) in serious crisis. They are considering voluntary self admission to a psychiatric facility. But there are obstacles:

- They have had terrible experiences in facilities in the past.
- They are on disability payments and are terrified of getting stuck with a bill they can't pay that ruins their life.

Can anyone in Montreux area recommend an appropriate facility that is guaranteed to be free and decent quality?

Or can you recommend where to go to get information and support for someone in Vaud who is in crisis?

An eSIM was recommended to a friend who's travelling to Japan. Her phone isn’t eSIM-compatible, though. Does anyone with local knowledge know if she’d even need a SIM there just for a short trip? I received a phone call from a law office yesterday. Apparently when my mother passed away she left me property that she owned with my dad. The law office contacted me to ask me to take my name off the deed. I've been #nocontact with my parents for over 5 years now. I honestly don't remember if I've been told about this property at all.

Would it be worth fighting them on this? Is it worth going to court to get my dad's name off the deed? It would be amazing to get some extra cash from the sale of this property. The normalization of "vibe coding" in certain environments is pushing me in the exact opposite direction.

I, a normie (ok maybe a semi-technical person), would like to learn some basic computer programming.

My hosting solution just sent me the "updated" invoice for next year and they are out of their fucking corporate minds. So rather than giving them more money, I was thinking it would be nice to pay some self-hosting hacker type (furry or not) and support weird and small rather than large and capitalist.

I would need the following:
- the fairly lightweight website orsom.eu reliably online (all html/CSS with a tiny bit of JavaScript, quite low traffic, okay just using FileZilla for access)
- a couple of email addresses with 5-10 GB of storage (a webmail client would be a plus for emergencies, but just using Thunderbird and K9 is fine)
- EU based (preferably) and better if you can send me an invoice

Does anyone know of web app I can use with a fediverse account that only enables composing and posting, *not* reading or scrolling (except for maybe my own posts).

Rationale: I've lost count of the times I've opened my app to post something, got distracted by something scrolling by, and then spent precious minutes retracing my steps to figure out what I was going to post about. For example, I opened my app to post about the music I'm listening to, then got distracted.

#DeltaChat experimentations and questions

I attempted to install Delta Chat on my Pixel 9 running GrapheneOS and I couldn't get the QR code pairing to work.

So I attempted the "restore from backup" method and it worked seamlessly and instantaneously.

Since Delta Chat doesn't require a phone number or an email address, I wonder what are the best practices to ensure you don't lose access to your account? (In case you lose your main phone)?

I have it set up on my iPhone, on my second phone running GrapheneOS, on two Macs in Paris and now on a MacMini in Italy... so 5 devices in total.

How often do you run backups? Shall I do them every week? Any other advice to share?
