buc.ci is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
So erm... why are their like... 5 #Necromunda core rulebooks?
Excluding Confrontation, there's:
• The 1995 edition (Necromunda)
• The 2003 edition (Necromunda Underhive)
But there's three (?) different 2020s Core Rulebooks, one called Necromunda Core Rules and two called Necromunda Underhive Core Rules with different covers?
Please 'splain. 😵💫
Are there any uterus owners out there in the Fediverse that started perimenopause in their late 30s and have any success stories with HRT or something else? I'd love to hear about it! #AskFedi #perimenopause #menopause
Self-hosting people!
Do you have suggestions for directories of self-hostable free open source software?
So far I've got the Awesome list at https://awesome-selfhosted.net but wondered if there are any others you would recommend?
My tagline has read "Professional Computer Booper" while I've been in a Software Engineering role. Now that I'm an Architect, what should it change to? (If at all)
I'll probably stew and simmer on it for a while, but if any of all have something that might be inspiring, I'd love to hear it.
Where do you submit photos to identify an odd #electrical #connector ?

Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification.
I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something?
I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other.
Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? I wanna see more Instant Messaging online in these spaces.

Got my eye on a Pixel 10a, lavender (of course), used (of course). Anyone in my circle know of any issues or problems with this particular phone model?
I had a Pixel 8 Pro in the past running Graphene OS and /e/OS, and one of those OSes will end up on this phone if I get it.
Does anyone have a favorite guide for de-googling their lives? I’ve got a personal Google workspace account and I’ve lived with the ick long enough. Time to eject and go some combination of indie, open source and self-hosted. #lazyweb #degoogle #selfhosting #askfedi
I already have a pikapods.com account, which means I could run a nextcloud instance for about $7/month (to start, no idea how much it would be if I actually imported everything) and replace GMail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc. So, umm, maybe I don't need a guide, I just need willpower.
The scariest thing is probably going through my password manager and figuring out EVERYWHERE I've used Login With Google and migrating those to a password.

Hey fedi folx
Before we forget to ask and it gets too late to do so¹, is there any FOSS that can be used to view a downloaded copy of your Mastodon account data in a pleasant, visual format?
We don't mean XML-like: we mean like viewing an offline copy of the posts.
Alternative, are there any good ways to make some kind of online or offline backup of all your posts... at least the public ones?
We're trying to get ahead of needing to rush to solve the issue in October, and then finding no solutions.
As far as we're aware, there is still no option to migrate your posts and/or media from one instance to another, but if there is some method for this, we would be interested.
Thank you in advance. Boosts are okay, but ideally we're trying to avoid getting too many answers, due to limited executive function 😅

Folgendes Problem:

Hey Office365 thing-knowers: is it possible to connect MS Lists to an SQL database in order to ingest the data? Or do I have to create a CSV that it will understand (proving difficult, the data has some free text fields that include unicode, line breaks and various quotes. I can make a valid CSV using mysqldump, but the Microsoft apps refuse to correctly read it).
If Lists can't do it will Access be a better fit?

Does anyone happen to know if there's a way to change the Emergency Alert Notification on Android to be a different sound, or to ensure it is completely silent? Or an alternate way of receiving them that bypasses the Android native functionality?

I'm looking around for #BackupPower (UPS, power statin, etc.) with good runtime for my modem in power outages; i.e., not 23 minutes, but several hours.
It's frustrating trying to read through fake reviews and AI slop.
#DuckDuckFedi, I would love recomendations **from people who know what they're talking about** for A) brands & models or B) reliable info sources/reviews for a UPS suitable for a modem with 7+ hours runtime (my current standard to beat). Thank you.

Does anyone here have a wise.com account?
This is a bit embarassing, but how would I even pay using their "digital cards"?
Their website says "just like with your physical card!" but, well, cleary not. It's not in my pocket, to begin with.
How do you usually "take out" a digital card? And then, you just hold your phone to the contact point and it will just work? What if it doesn't? Do you need NFC enabled? Do you need internet?
Please, someone enlighten me.
Anyone have over-ear wireless headphones recommendations for a tighter budget?
I had a nice pair of Bose headphones for almost 10 years. Replacement was near but I left them out in the rain. Replacement is now!
Would love something closer to 100 or 150 US dollars, if possible, but I use them daily for music, so sound quality's really important. Lighter weight is also better.
Share recs from experience please. Thanks, and feel free to boost!

I have a question for Science & Medicine Fedi:

I have questions for people who have a breadmaker machine they use to make gluten-free bread specifically:
1. Does your machine make good gluten-free bread?
2. How often do you actually use it? How did you get into a routine with it?
3. If you have a machine that is PFAS / Teflon / PTFE-free (i.e, with a steel or ceramic insert) that you like, I'd love to know the brand!
Replies from gluten-free bakers only please. Ta!
I'm curious about the Canadian TV shows that are known and loved in the Fediverse.
What are three Canadian narrative series that you love? 🍁
- Narrative = drama, dramedy, sitcom. Canadian sketch comedy is a whole other discussion.
- Limit yourself to 3 -- not laundry lists.
- If 3 is too limiting, try 3 you love + 3 you'd recommend (those can be v. different lists!)
- Doesn't have to be a definitive answer, off the top of your head is fine, no stress.
I asked this question on fedi multiple times already, but it's time for another round. If you've been/you were burnt out after working for n years in IT/tech and you quit, what have you switched to, professionally? Arts, crafts, you went back to school to make a degree not connected with IT?

Has anyone already developed something like a '15 day plan' to try the Fediverse, specifically targeted at helping communities/interest groups give it a go via a series of quick and easy steps?
I'm thinking something like this to help facilitate the beginnings of a migration:
Day 1: Browse the home feeds of these three servers suited to our shared interest(s).
Day 2: Choose one of those servers and register an account.
Day 3: Follow at least ten other accounts; here are 25 suggestions.
Day 4: Browse your new home feed.
Day 5: Browse your live feed (own server).
Day 6: Like a post.
Day 7: Boost a post.
Day 8: Reply to a post.
Day 9: Write an #Introduction post.
Etc etc.
I'm looking for a #Linux replacement for #Clipy on #MacOS. It's a clipboard extension and the particular feature I'm after is the ability to save snippets of text that you can recall via keyboard shortcut and navigating your categories to find the snippet you want. Selecting the snippet inserts it where the cursor has focus.
I may be using the wrong search terms, but everything I find is just a clipboard history manager, or just does text expansion - and I can't remember a bunch of text strings to trigger my snippets.
Has anyone in programming come across the idea of Plato's Theory of Forms?
Which is the idea you can create the perfect form of say a city in your head, but reality will force you to compromise.
I feel this could be applied to our application designs. Particularly with our failures to consider accessibility. We're too attached to perfection.
But I'll need to dig in more. As I only have the Symposium. I think it's worth the question though.
Which books do you wish would be made into tv shows or films?
My vote goes to “The Deep” by Rivers Solomon.
It’s the best mermaid story I’ve ever read, and the plot twists in it would look amazing on the big or small screen.
Don't suppose any real humans out there know whether you can drill through plastic fascia boards to screw external blinds into the roof struts or whether they'll just crack and shatter do you? #askfedi
Hey all.
I've always been interested in learning to code properly. I can use VBA sufficiently well as that's all i've been required to use in my work.
I'm thinking now is a good time to learn something else and get good at it, without any AI or 'vibe' coding. I think there's about to be a need for more people who can code properly.
Anyway, what would be the best one to learn? I'm a little overwhelmed by all the choices! No particular career path in mind yet, so all recommendations welcome. Thanks!
Question for people who went to big music events in the 1970's:
My mum did this. But she can't remember how she got the tickets. Was there a phone number? How did you pay? Was it a cheque in the post and hope they still had tickets left?
Her memory has completely gone about it but I'm hoping the people of the Fediverse might have some experience and memories that might help.

I am preparing to purchase a solar power station and an ebike.
I figure that my best bet is looking to the #SolarPunk community to point me in the right direction. I want familiarize myself with what I want to know about current tech, and I already have a basic understanding of the topics. Anyone want to share their wisdom about either solar charging stations or ebikes with me? 🙏💜
I will likely be a heavy user of the power station. I have a travel trailer with 200 watts on the roof and basically no power storage, and I'm looking to upgrade that, soon. But today's thoughts are on a portable setup.

I built this onboarding tool into FediDB.com last year, but it could use some work.
Anyone want to help improve it?
Spent the weekend with my brother. We've been doing up their old car that hes going to lend me now I sold my car. We've put the trim back together, fixed the exhaust, cleaned the AC and upholstery from mould and given her a clean.
She's going for an MOT on Wednesday, and all being well, I can take her home.
I need a name for her: burnt orange Peugeot 208. I'm thinking Amber. But also thinking of Shallan (as she's a ginge).
I have an anti-ai 13yo who had his first taste of digital logic in school this past year, and he wants to start building some things in Roblox or Minecraft so I would like to find something that has plans that are explained, show how it works, etc. Building small well explained circuits. YT has videos, but most seem to be "dig this and put this here" videos with the "how" but not the "why"

Suppose I wanted to get into photography and I wanted to get a decent digital camera, what would you suggest?
Almost out of #coffee beans; who has suggestions? I'm feeling curious, so any kind of roast or blend is welcome, as long as it is your favorite or top recommendation.
I usually use a French press, very coarse grinding. I also have a moka pot I should really use more and a pour-over, but no espresso machine.

What are the food choices that help you personally deal with extreme heat? (I.e., please share what you do if you do it.)
hello fedi! looking for an actually decent search engine! any recommendations?
by actually decent i mean:
- no "ai". zero. whatsoever. zilch. nada. none. did i mention zero.
- not just repackaging results from other search engines
- not run by complete and utter fuckwads
thanks! :) /gen

Also deutlich mehr as in „ab das 12fache“. Dafür halten sie möglicherweise länger, und man kann sie auch im Winter drauflassen als reinen Sichtschutz.
Frage ist jetzt: Lohnt sich die Investition? Hat jemand eigene Erfahrungen?

Hey, everyone. I want to spend the next few weeks learning @guix and installing it as a replacement for Debian. The learning curve looks daunting. Where do I start?
I want to do it on real hardware and I have a spare laptop. Sadly @daviwil's nice tutorials appear outdated...?
What I have: an ambition for software freedom and a love of Lisp. What I need: an understanding of the packaging model and (sadly) support for non-free hardware.
Point me to a recent .iso? Point me to a good explainer for noobs? Thanks!
