"I'm not a political person on either side," Cook said. "I'm not political."
That... that's not what political means. That's what partisan means.
Tim Cook isn't stupid. He knows what words mean. Saying that, like that, is talking like a politician - lying softly or misleading without stating an obvious falsehood.

#Apple sure has hidden the "Background Security Improvement" well: You can find it from Settings > Privacy & Security > Security Improvements
Now there's 3 places where you can find security updates to install. Great!
Apple just released their first “Background Security Improvement,” a lightweight patch fixing a severe WebKit 0-day exploit.
Finding the new “iOS 26.3.1 (a)” update may not be where you’d expect! You can check in the Settings app, under Privacy & Security > Security Improvements. This page will tell you whether you can install it, or if it’s already installed. If you don’t see anything listed at all, give it a minute! We’ve noticed it’s quite slow 🤭
Tech IS politics. Tim Cook manages a company that rivals small nation's economies. He's one of the most effective politicians of the modern age, and Apple pours money into marketing and lobbying efforts. Apple has tremendous influence over governments, and appeals against regulations.
Apple is a political bully and Tim Cook is a liar.

Has anyone made a self contained Time Machine backup server (that runs on FreeBSD)? It looks like the old ways of backing up over the network finally broke, and I can't fool MacOS anymore by using a sparse disk image like I have for years.
I don't want to have to configure and install samba, I just want something that works and is small and self contained.
Although the Mac mini with the Apple M4 chip does have a pretty respectable graphics performance given its small size, it's still nowhere near my boring, old gaming PC.
I just ran the "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" benchmark on the M4 and managed to get around 25-35fps in a 1440p resolution. Just for comparison, I then booted up my PC and ... well... it managed over 200fps. On 2160p 4K with highest settings. Holy cow! Probably not a fair fight.😅

I really like how #apple is dealing with the #ai stuff. We had an incident this morning with my grandmother, and I've had to send out some e-mails. And the Apple Intelligence stuff, summarizes the contents of the e-mail really briefly in the message view. Very nice feature, and I just now noticed it does that because it's very, very not in your face. None of the AI stuff in #macOS is really front and center, and what is there actually does useful things.

God I hate how much the 'recent' folder in Apple macOS has screwed up people's knowledge of where files are stored.
Most beginning to intermediate computer users have no idea where their files are, how to find them, or how to organize them.
Also, automatically forcing people to save onto the Cloud rather than their computers in a way that automatically limits their storage capacity and degrades their user experience is wrong.

Reports of the “switch your iPhone or iPad to our Apple Account and make money*” scams have increased lately, and the scammers are gaining full ownership of the devices.
They’ll switch the device into lost mode too, which blocks the sole remaining path to reverting Activation Lock and regaining ownership.

I’m probably just now noticing something that’s really old news to other people, but I became a little tired of having to go into the advanced Safari settings to briefly turn on JavaScript for the very brief moment I needed it on my iPhone. I generally keep it off except for those times when I absolutely need it on my mobile device. Today, I thought I could find it quicker by searching for it. If I go to the settings app and I explicitly look for JavaScript, no results show up at all. I think if you’re a developer of any operating system, and you have a search function, I think that should be able to find advance options as well as surface level options. #Apple #SoftwareDev

A #privacy warning about 5G Network Slicing...
According to Verizon, network slicing is somewhat akin to a #VPN. It allows carriers to isolate and prioritize certain traffic, from apps, to specific endpoints, special hardware, etc.
On iPhone devices, Apple calls this feature "Enhance 5G for Apps", which sounds like a good thing. Verizon states that 5G networks lend themselves especially well to this technology.
However, entire categories of apps are shared with your mobile carrier if you have this setting enabled. AFAIK, it is enabled by default. Check your settings!

Let‘s try some … let‘s say … more serious gaming on the MacBook Neo. I’m curious to see what an iPhone chip can do!
Racintosh Plus: Never trust a computer you can't mount in a rack.
Having read numerous articles about the brand new Apple Macbook Neo and I can't help but think about the economies of scale. They're reusing A18 Pro silicon (which is a smartphone SoC) for a desktop OS, Apple is subsidizing their research & development and advanced wafer costs across millions of iPhones and entry-level laptops.
This pricing removes the previous economic barriers for standard, high-volume personal computers in a way Dell or HP haven't been quite able to do so far.
I think it doesn't threaten the ThinkPad or heavy-duty workstations per se, but it absolutely wrecks the value proposition of premium chromebooks and low-end windows ARM machines.

I was incorrect in the quoted toot.
The trackpad is mechanical rather than haptic, but it doesn’t have a “diving board” hinge design. You can press down on any part of the surface and it depresses evenly, feels uniform.
It reminds me of the first generation Magic Keyboard case for iPad Pro. In both cases I find the loud mechanical click noise beyond annoying. 👨🏻💻

Any #CultOfApple folks here? My teenage daughter, who has only had #Linux laptops so far in her life has expressed interest in a Macbook. After I stopped sobbing deep in my heart I decided to try to help her.
She found a deal for a 2017 Macbook Air with 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD for about $350. She's not a gamer; she watches a lot of online videos, does a ton of word processing (kind of an amazing teenage writer in my biased opinion), and occasionally does graphics stuff (e.g., photo editing, Inkscape-type creation, etc.) or very occasionally some video editing. She's looking for long battery life, great graphics, and something that fits easily in her bag--so probably a 13" Macbook.
I'm cool with the $500 or so pricepoint. Used/refubished is pretty much guaranteed, of course. I'd like her laptop to "feel snappy" for a couple of years (8GB RAM and whatever processor was in the 2017 model seemed like it might not), and hopefully have a battery that doesn't die too soon, because I've never once heard anything positive about the repairability of Macs.
Anyone who has recommendations about a line or model I might look for would be thanked warmly.

I am not a big fan of Apple. Yes, I have been using some of their products for many years now, but I'm trying to shift to alternatives whenever possible. But not everything they do is bad. One of the things I really appreciated was the introduction of ATT, the App Tracking Transparency. This means when you install a new app on your iPhone and start it for the first time, it will ask for consent for tracking. If the user denies, tracking is not allowed.
I believe this is a legit and important functionality. Unfortunately, the German media and advertising industry does not share this view and has approached the Federal Cartel office.Apple has proposed a compromise that has been rejected by five assiciations. They are calling on the Federal Cartel Office to prohibit the current ATT tracking query and impose a fine.
They argue in the lines of that Apple allows tracking for their own apps without asking permission. (Which sadly is true)
I am afraid ATT will be watered down, but hey, why not moving to more secure and privacy friendly alternative like GrapheneOS? When it comes to privacy, I do not want to depend on third parties to determine how much privacy they want to grant me.

#MDACF - #BrowntailMoth in #Maine - Spotlight
February 27, 2026
"BrowntailMoth (Euproctis chrysorrhoea L.) populations decreased in some areas in 2025, but are still elevated in others. Check trees this winter to see whether your community may be impacted by browntail moth this spring. If you find winter webs, take action to make a difference!
Browntail Moth (#BTM) is an invasive insect of forest and human health concern that feeds on #oak, #apple, #cherry, #crabapple, #elm, #birch, #poplar, #shadbush, and #rugosa rose bushes in Maine. BTM caterpillars have irritating hairs that break off their bodies and settle in the environment, causing an #ItchyRash for humans that come in contact with the hairs.
In the winter, look for palm-sized BTM winter webs at the tips of trees to see if you may be dealing with BTM caterpillars in the spring and summer. Actions to take in the winter and spring:
- Scout for and remove winter webs with hand snips or an extendable pole pruner in areas you can safely reach. Destroy webs in a contained fire or soak the webs in a bucket of soapy water for a few days before disposing.
- Find professional help if you can't reach and remove winter webs. Licensed arborists, pesticide applicators, and FAA-certified drone operators may be able to help you remove webs or treat your infested trees to reduce BTM populations.
- Insecticide treatments in mid-April to mid-May may also be effective at reducing populations.
In mid-April, BTM caterpillars will emerge from their winter webs and begin feeding on the buds and leaves of their host trees until late June. Actions to take in late spring and summer:
- Learn how to identify the browntail caterpillar and avoid areas where these caterpillars have been.
- Change clothes and shower after working in infested areas to wash away irritating hairs and prevent the rash.
- Keep outdoor lights off in July to dissuade BTM adult moths from flying near your dooryard and laying eggs in nearby trees."

This app (Macky) showed up on Hacker News as a supposedly easy way to connect from your iPhone to your Mac command line without something as old-fashioned (or secure) like SSH. It uses WebRTC instead for ... reasons.
Immediate first question: why should I trust this closed source app from an unknown source with remote access to my Mac?
I had a play with it using mitmproxy and one thing is for sure, it doesn't implement certificate pinning. It happily connected to my self-signed certificate. When you set a master password for access to your Mac it's sent to their server (a Cloudflare Worker) as plaintext (albeit over TLS) rather than using it as input to a key derivation function. That makes me think it's probably stored server-side with little to no security. All in all, there ain't a bargepole long enough for me to touch this with.
Apple TV's Kaiju-sized 'Monarch' drone show sets a new world record
The #Apple TV epic #Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is all about larger-than-life titans roaming the Earth and causing carnage. In its promotion for the second season of the show, #AppleTV commissioned a giant #drone display from Heads in the Sky to match that scale.
The team from Dark Sky that Apple acquired years ago to improve the stock Weather app have left the fruit company to create a new startup called Acme Weather.
The biggest differentiator is providing numerous forecast lines to give the user insight into multiple potential outcomes.
I will be sticking with Carrot Weather, but I love the idea there is still room for improvement in this category, and they’re also working on an Android app.
