ALWAYS a good day for some Furs!
The first four Psych Furs albums are absolutely perfect, but the Mirror Moves/Talk Talk Talk back-to-back exercise is the most satisfying #80s #alternative pair for me.
I could never pick which of those two I like better, but Mirror Moves is so friggin great.
Great pair of singles in “The Ghost In You” and “Heaven”, but the rest of the album’s material is SO STRONG.
Richard Butler’s voice is so singular. There’s no confusing him with anybody else. When you hear him… you know it’s HIM.
Now… can we PLEASE get somebody to press Butler’s post-Furs band Live Spit Love’s self-titled album to vinyl?
It’s fucking laughable that there’s no vinyl of THAT that exists.

A wonderfully quirky collection of #80s #indie #alternative #newwave and #punk thatboriginally came with a fanzine called What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, which was run by Chris Seventeen.
Unfortunately, the magazine was not either this when I bought it used, but that’s fine. This comp has some great stuff on it from Nikki Sudden, The Creeping Candies, The Bible Belt and The Spinning Wighats to name just a few.
Really cool songs. Half of which I’d never heard before, which is why finding these odd little gems great!

A very loose-y goose-y batch of songs that Eno intended for filmmakers to use in their movies, though no films in particular.
A lot of them are very short, and the gear that Eno used would also find its way onto David Bowie’s LOW.
Some of this material actually DID make it into some movies. The two most famous examples being Rock N Roll High School with The Ramones, and the killer 1986 John Woo movie A Better Tomorrow.
This is not something I listen to often, but since it’s snowing like a motherfucker outside right now, I figured it would be a good choice.

For all of my friends following #blackhistorymonth who enjoy #performance #art and want to learn about #latino and especially #black #brazil #culture I cannot encourage you enough to look at our #carnival, specifically at the Desfile de Escola de Samba (Samba School Parade) and it's history.
I used to not enjoy it, as I saw it as just Hot Woman Dancing Almost Naked tm (and, to be fair, there is a lot of it) but if you can look at it from a non-gooner perspective you will see that it is imho one of the most impressive forms of performance art.
The parade has to be bound by a defined plot and history (enredo), and has to convey that to the audience through the music (samba-enredo), costumes, alegoric carts, dances and various forms of performances.
Each Ala (specific hematic group within the samba school's parade) has to have a function, and has to convey that through visual means.
Some of them have specific purposes, like the front commission, the first Ala of the parade, has the mission to introduce the enredo through an elaborate choreography, and may or may not be accompanied by a specific cart called the abre-alad.
There is also the mestre-sala and porta-bandeira, two (sometimes three) couples of dancers thar have to carry the banner/flag (bandeira) of the school, and have to convey the enredo and set the energy of the parade through interpretive dancing.
The heart of the whole parade is the bateria, the ensemble of samba instruments that actually play the music, together with the singers is governed by her queen (rainha de bateria), a stunning woman who has the job of pacing and setting the energy of the bateria. If you have heard Samba in media outside of Brazil you have probably heard what the ensemble sounds like.
The Bateria is organized by the Mestre de Bateria, essentially the maestro/conductor and his (or her) team, that has to keep everything in line sounding good and innovating each year, coming up with percussive compositions that have to serve the enredo.
They are (imho) the most important part of the whole parade, as they are the sonic backbone through the audience and the jurors are going to interpret and experience the parade.
All of that (and way more that I could go on for paragraphs) have to enter and leave the Sapucaí, the specific street that they use to parade, within 81 minutes.
Speaking of jurors, competition is fierce. Each school is judged across various subjects from 1-10, and getting even an 8 in any of the subjects is seen as disqualifying from winning the competition.
The most important job is from the carnavalesco, essentially the art director of the whole thing, has to balance music, plastic arts, choreography and allegory to tell a progressing story with beginning, middle and end, all that has to be planned, executed, locked, loaded and ready to go from the music and choreography to costumes, allegoric carts, and rehearsals.
It is not just Hot Woman Dancing, it is culture and some of the most impressive forms of performance art in the whole planet exactly because it pushes artists to mix many different types of art into one cohesive performance in shortish term.
Although, to be completely honest there are some parades from some years that feel like they are just mindlessly sexualizing woman, but the best of the best are those that manage to tie everything together in a way that serves the enredo and most importantly of all, manage to do that while giving the watcher the sense of wonder and whimsy that a parade should.
If I managed to pique your interest about Desfile de Escola de Samba, you should give it a Google and a watch! This introduction really does not give it justice.
Here's one of my favorites that I've done. I just think that it turned out superbly well.
There is, of course, a non-blep version of this that I made for when I want to be serious. But the blep was the original intent.

Eine Federzeichnung zeigt acht Häuser in einer Reihe: Ein Architekturbüro, eine verlassene Pizzeria, ein altes, verlassenes Haus mit Scheunentor, ein Tattoo-Studio, eine Nudelmacherei, ein Spielzeuggeschäft, die Zehntscheuer und einen sehr schönen Fachwerkbau (Jugendgästehaus). Bis auf die Nudelmacherei und die Jugendherberge sind alle Häuser traufständig angeordnet. Das größte Gebäude ist die Zehntscheuer mit ihrem gewaltigen Satteldach und den zwei wandhohen Toren. Heute dient es als Museum.

After taking in a beautiful sunrise yesterday (10-23-23) I always like to grab a picture or two, or twenty-two of the footbridge dory in Ogunquit, Maine. The golden light was perfect, and the Great Blue Heron just sitting there was a bonus. It was a great morning, and I have a few more wonderful shots to share.

A strange and disturbing figure, rendered entirely in dark, dull, monochromatic blue-green against a pale tan background. The figure is lurching forward, the way a zombie would, arms hanging down. One arm is longer than the other. Its legs are oddly thin compared to its upper body. Also pinned to the left breast of the coat is what looks like an ID card, although whatever is printed on it is not visible. An interesting single of 3 songs by an #80s band from Sheffield, England (no, they weren’t Russian), with ties to the band Cabaret Voltaire, who helped them produce their early recordings.
The lead song here, “Chains”, has a dance-y #synthpop vibe to it, but it’s got some angular, #postpunk leanings as well… just with a more playful and fun vibe.
Pulsing bass lines, very rhythm-driven, and a bit of a DIY production aesthetic.
The two songs on the flip side, “Gramophone” and “Fighting” are in the same vein. Jerky guitars, some saxophones mixed in, very tongue in cheek.
All in all, these songs are worth checking out for the bass lines alone. Fat, propulsive, and they sound great in the mix.
Fun tunes.

The songcraft transcends whatever label you want to give it, and it cannot be pigeonholed. Not even 40+ years later.
That’s always what made HUSKER DU special. None of their peers from WHATEVER that scene was could do what their TWO great songwriters were doing.
Bob and Grant were incredible foils for each other.
Fast, furious, melodic, catchy, angry, pensive, thoughtful, beautiful… they were ALL those things, and Zen Arcade is the magnum opus that shows EVERY one of those adjectives all at once.

I will never get sick of listening to this.

Blue City was SO bad, that first-time director Michelle Manning would never be allowed to direct a major studio motion picture ever again.
It’s a HORRENDOUSLY bad movie.
Luckily, it’s not ALL bad, because it gave us a really cool soundtrack compliments of the great Ry Cooder. It’s far and away the best part of the movie, and if it was a backdrop to a DIFFERENT movie, people would know it more.

This contains excerpts of Nixon’s nomination acceptance speech from 1968; 4 short years BEFORE Watergate, & 6 years before he’d be forced to resign the presidency.
Even when accepting this nomination in ‘68, his nefarious & illegal covert activities were already long underway.

An eerie scene: a crimson sky smeared with purple clouds; a purple mountain range in the background; and a craggy mountainside in the foreground. any of y'all know any good replacements for MS Paint? and i don't mean a specialized tool with a bunch of knobs and levers to pull like GIMP or the various other popular pixel art tools. just a very simple program where you can easily paste things in, move them around, and occasionally draw a little (very basic features which microsoft has somehow managed to completely fucking cock up!)

Been a long time since I’ve listened to some Pylon!
Gyrate was their first record, and it’s still my favorite.
It’s got the same kinda jittery, nervous, art school feel to it; much in the same way that early Talking Heads had, but maybe a little more jagged and dirty.
My favorite part about Pylon is that their four individual parts are completely different puzzle pieces. Their musical approaches of each instrument are so unique, but they lock into together perfectly.
They were always very unique in that way to my ears.
And man, Vanessa Ellison (real last name Hay) was the perfect front woman for this band.
She’s so savage on “Feast On My Heart”.
Great album by a unique band.
Wonderful sounding reissue, too.
