    Giving you the warm shoulder.

Photograph of a male cardinal perched on a slender tree branch amid a tangle of small branches and bright green spring leaves. The cardinal is facing away from the camera with its head turned to the left in profile to look over its shoulder and directly at the camera. Male cardinals have brown legs and feet with grasping claws, red feathers with darker red on their back, wings, and tail, an orange beak, dark eyes, a black mask that wraps from top of the beak to its neck, and a crest on the top of their head that can be raised or lowered. When viewed from the front, the crest tapers from the top of the bird's head into a conical shape with a sharp tip. In this case, the cardinal has its crest lowered to rest on the top of its head.

                      Jay on the Move

The easiest way to catch a bird on the move is to already be snapping pictures when it leaves a known perch. Like this blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) leaping from a swing‑shaped feeder with a whole peanut in its beak. Honestly, it might have two.

If you're enchanted by images of blue jays and other captivating corvids, dive into my photo gallery for a visual treat! Take a peek:

                      swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"A blue jay bursts away from a small swing‑shaped feeder, caught in the instant of takeoff. Its wings are flung wide, each feather sharply defined — bands of electric blue, deep indigo, and crisp white flashing like stained glass in motion. The bird’s body tilts forward with purpose, legs tucked, tail fanned slightly for balance.

Clamped firmly in its beak is a whole peanut, the shell pale and textured against the jay’s sleek, vivid plumage. You can almost sense the determination in the bird’s posture — a quick snatch‑and‑go, a triumphant escape with its prize.

The wooden feeder beneath it is just beginning to fall out of focus, as if the bird has already left that moment behind. The background melts into a soft blur of muted greens and browns, making the blue jay stand out like a bright spark of color and motion. The whole scene feels alive, crisp, and full of energy — a split second of wild grace frozen in midair." - Microsoft Copilot

The bird's large dark eyes, blue-gray hooked beak, and distinctive dark malar stripe are clearly visible. The breast and body feathers show the streaked brown and buff plumage characteristic of a juvenile peregrine rather than the slate gray and white of an adult. The feather detail across the chest and wings is sharp and highly detailed. Angel Rocks, Chena River State Recreation Area, Fairbanks, Alaska.

There are some places where you are pretty much guaranteed to see birds, and you are likely to find them in predictable areas of that place.

The Arboretum is like that. You always see beautiful hummingbirds there. You always see quail there.

So here is a beautiful male quail. It's plume is standing straight up on its head. Its lovely blue-grey tail is pointing right at us. It's brown wings are edged with ivory and are folded on its back. We can see a little bit of the left side of its head - black, white, and a little bit of its eye.

The rest of his family was there with their dad, but they were camera-shy.

Before a few years ago, I'd never seen or even heard of a tree creeper. Now, they're one of my favourite birds.

Watching them move up a tree is fascinating and I was lucky enough to see one stay still enough to get relatively close for this photo.

Does anyone else have a soft spot for these wonderful birds?

A male red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop a female, his wings lifted in a wide, dramatic spread that suggests either a protective stance or a courtship display. The pair balance together on a slender tree limb, their sharply detailed plumage set against a soft, blurred backdrop of blue sky and natural color, creating a striking contrast between the crisp foreground and the gentle background.

If you enjoy wildlife and nature photography, check out my photo gallery here:

"Two red‑bellied woodpeckers share a narrow branch against a clean, cloudless blue sky. The male stands slightly behind the female, his bright red crown glowing like a flame in the sunlight. His wings are lifted and half‑spread, the black‑and‑white ladder pattern on his feathers fanning outward in a crisp, dramatic arc. His posture leans forward, close to the female, giving the impression of an intimate or assertive moment between them.

The female, perched in front, has a softer, paler head with only a hint of red near the nape. Her body is angled slightly downward, as if she has just landed or is bracing herself. Her wings are folded neatly at her sides, showing the same bold black‑and‑white barring but without the male’s vivid red cap. Both birds grip the branch with their strong feet, their bodies close enough that their feathers nearly touch.

The background is a smooth wash of sky blue, making the birds stand out sharply. A faint blur of green foliage sits low in the frame, but the focus is entirely on the pair — their colors, their posture, and the sense of a private moment captured in perfect clarity." - Microsoft Copilot

The bird has a distinctive blue-grey head and nape, a chestnut-brown back, and a buff-colored breast heavily marked with bold, black arrow-shaped spots. Its beak is a bright yellow-orange with a dark tip. In the soft-focus background, small red berries hang from the thin, interlacing branches of a shrub.

Clue: "I am a social member of the thrush family, often arriving in large, chattering flocks to feast on winter berries. Look for my blue-grey 'hood' and speckled chest to tell me apart from my cousins."

Fun Fact: These birds are famously feisty! When a predator like a hawk or a crow threatens their nesting colony, they will band together and "bomb" the intruder with droppings!

Thankfully all was well and it was just that the parents had decided there wasn’t enough room in the nest and everyone needed their own branch. I’m surprised it lasted this long given tawnys build very half-arsed nests.

I was just walking in another part of the neighbourhood and spotted a Tawny. Could be one of my friends, but they look like they’re nesting so could also be a new family with a late group of babies which would be delightful.

This is my first time spotting a Tawny in a new location without any assistance (up high and in low light no less). That feels like a major milestone towards being a skilled birder!

The bird is standing on a wooden fencepost, which is old looking and slightly green from lichen growing on it. In the post sits black/orange electric insulator holding up an electrical wire of the fence that the post is part of.

The jackdaw stands with its body slightly pointed to the left, wings and tail folded and its head slightly pointing back towards the camera, so that both its bright light blue eyes are visible.

The structure of the birds feather is well defined in the photo and the background is pleasingly smooth with slight colour variation from mostly grey with maybe a hint of blue in the upper part and light with some yellow/green lower down.

I’m curious about the feathers on its throat—they’re so bright and white that they almost blend into the fence behind it. It’s probably just the lighting; the sky was overcast, and sometimes I really have to crank up the ISO. Still, I like the effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s visually striking.

The bird’s head is a vivid, fire‑bright red that runs from the crown down the nape, glowing against the softer tones around it. Its face and chest are a pale, creamy yellow, smooth and clean like brushed parchment.

Across its back and wings, bold black‑and‑white bars create a striking ladder‑like pattern, each line crisp and deliberate. The woodpecker’s beak is long, straight, and sharply pointed—an instrument built for chiseling into bark. Its dark eye is alert, focused, giving the sense that it’s listening for the faint movements of insects beneath the surface.

Behind the bird, a light, neutral background makes its colors stand out even more, as though the woodpecker has stepped into a spotlight. The entire scene feels still and intimate, capturing the bird in a moment of quiet vigilance." - Microsoft Copilot

The bird has a vibrant yellow chest and belly, contrasting with its warm brown wings and long tail. Its most striking feature is its head pattern: a bold black "mask" across the eyes, sandwiched between a white throat and a bright white stripe above the eye, topped with a black crown. The background is a soft, out-of-focus mix of golden-green foliage and a clear blue sky.

Clue: "I’m a boisterous tyrant flycatcher named after my own loud, three-syllable call that sounds like I’m shouting my name in French: 'Qu'est-ce qu'il dit?'"

Fun fact: This bird is surprisingly opportunistic—it’s one of the few of its kind that dives into water like a kingfisher to catch small fish and tadpoles!

This issue has become an important feature. The constant slow dripping of the tap supplies the bird's bath with fresh water. As a result birds, mostly house sparrows, use it as their drinking spot. It is quite literally their water cooler / coffee corner & you can see them chatting, eating & gossiping around it. It's a lovely thing to observe & great to start the morning with.

You’re looking up at it from below, so the bird appears almost suspended above you—broad, powerful, and effortlessly balanced on the air. Sunlight washes across its underside, revealing a mosaic of warm browns, pale creams, and darker bars that ripple across each feather. The wingtips taper into long, dark fingers that curl slightly at the ends, giving the impression of both reach and control.

Its tail is the unmistakable giveaway: a fan of rich, reddish‑orange feathers glowing against the blue backdrop, lit just enough to show their soft texture. The hawk’s body is streamlined, chest forward, head slightly angled as if scanning the ground with quiet authority. Even from this distance, there’s a sense of intention in its posture—an animal built for precision, gliding with the confidence of something that knows the sky belongs to it.

The background is a clean, open blue with only the faintest wisps of cloud, making the hawk’s silhouette feel even more striking. The image captures a moment of pure motion and mastery: a raptor riding invisible currents, wings open, tail flared, completely at ease in its element." - Microsoft Copilot

The bird’s form is slender and elegant — long black legs planted lightly in the still water, a narrow black bill tapering to a fine point, and a small flare of yellow at the base of the eyes that gives its face a quiet intensity.

The water is calm enough to hold a near‑perfect reflection of the egret, a soft mirror image stretching downward like a ghostly twin. Around the bird, the surface shifts from pale ripples to darker patches where wet sand or mud shows through, grounding the scene in a quiet coastal landscape.

The egret’s feathers catch the light in subtle layers, from smooth contour feathers along the body to the delicate wisps near the tail. It stands alert but unhurried, as if listening to the water itself. The overall feeling is serene — a moment of stillness held between the bird, its reflection, and the muted shoreline beyond." - Microsoft Copilot

I was planning to share a photo of a brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), just not this one. I accidentally grabbed it and moved it into my working directory, then figured, what the hay — so here we are.

Its whole-body curves into the motion of grooming: the head angled downward but also twisted back toward its left wing, beak reaching into the feathers as if tending to an itch just out of easy reach. The pose gives the bird a momentary, almost sculptural look — a loop of warm brown plumage bent into concentration.

Its head is a gentle tawny color, blending into darker, richer browns along the wings. The white breast is streaked with bold, dark lines that look like careful brushstrokes. As the bird works, its long tail hangs down for balance, steadying it against the slight sway of the branch. Light filters through the leaves, catching the edges of its feathers and giving them a soft, brushed glow. The background dissolves into muted greens and golds, making the thrasher feel like the single clear note in a quiet woodland moment — a wild creature absorbed in the small, necessary ritual of caring for itself." - Microsoft Copilot

The boulders in the foreground where the vultures are perching are mostly white quartz, offering a stark contrast with the black bodies of the vultures. There are large granite boulders in the background, and part of one large tree trunk and some other small brush is visible in the background as well.

The region is one of the world’s busiest flyways.

The birds soar over Palestinians living in “the world’s largest open-air prison” in Gaza – besieged for decades and now subjected to genocide – and over Palestinians living under occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. But Israel’s increasingly brutal system of oppression hasn’t stopped from raising their heads high to admire the birds filling the sky.

Forced to leave their homes in northern in November 2023 after Israeli expulsion orders, the twin sisters have continued publishing photos of the birds they found in displacement.

It occurred to me that I’d never photographed one on a sunny day. They’re year‑round residents here, but I mostly only see them around this time of year. I took this photo in the spring of 2023.

Its breast is a deep, warm orange—rich enough to feel like a small ember against the cooler tones around it. The head is dark, almost charcoal, with a clean white arc around each eye that gives the bird a sharp, attentive expression. Its beak is a bright, smooth yellow, pointed slightly forward as though testing the air.

The wings and back are a muted gray‑brown, the feathers layered like soft scales. Beneath the bird, the ground is a mix of green blades and brown, winter‑worn patches, the kind of grass that signals a season shifting but not yet settled. A few curled, dry leaves lie scattered nearby, their edges crisp and papery. The light is gentle—neither harsh nor dim—letting the robin’s colors stand out naturally against the subdued earth tones. The whole moment feels quiet, grounded, and unmistakably alive." - Microsoft Copilot with edits
