Jay on the Move
The easiest way to catch a bird on the move is to already be snapping pictures when it leaves a known perch. Like this blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) leaping from a swing‑shaped feeder with a whole peanut in its beak. Honestly, it might have two.

Before a few years ago, I'd never seen or even heard of a tree creeper. Now, they're one of my favourite birds.
Watching them move up a tree is fascinating and I was lucky enough to see one stay still enough to get relatively close for this photo.
Does anyone else have a soft spot for these wonderful birds?

Ahem ...
A male red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop a female, his wings lifted in a wide, dramatic spread that suggests either a protective stance or a courtship display. The pair balance together on a slender tree limb, their sharply detailed plumage set against a soft, blurred backdrop of blue sky and natural color, creating a striking contrast between the crisp foreground and the gentle background.

"Take down bird feeders this summer to cut spread of avian disease, says RSPB
Charity advises replacing seed and nut feeders, where birds gather, with small amounts of mealworms, fat balls or suet."
I was actually ahead of this advice, my feeders have been down for a month because I noticed I had a bird with avian pox. So now they will be staying down until autumn. #birds

Diseases are spread in saliva and poo at feeders, especially at the flat horizontal platform feeders that catch their poo. Bleach clean your feeders more frequently during warmer weather, pull feeders for summer, and use the vertical tube feeders because they don't catch as much poo.

It looks like the MoDos are still going to posing school, they are masters at the couple portrait 😆 And the Cowbirds have returned. They are very interesting native birds that get a lot of hate for their breeding behavior, they practice parasitic breeding. Nature made them this way, and human exploration of wildlife habitat may have made things a bit more extreme. I think they are really cool #birds. Happy Friday!

Wanted my Tawny Frogmouth friends included in the Aussie Bird Count so did tonight’s count from near their nest
Taking a walk to go see my Tawny Frogmouth friends is my favourite part of my routine these days. Quite wisely given their nests aren’t huge and it’s a bit windy the babies were mostly tucked safely under mum’s wing but one did briefly pop out. Dad somehow manages to sleep despite his small branch swaying
Got a fright when I arrived at the local Tawny Frogmouth nest to find no one there. Thankfully all was well and it was just that the parents had decided there wasn’t enough room in the nest and everyone needed their own branch. I’m surprised it lasted this long given tawnys build very half-arsed nests.
Also got to hear their adorable call which I don’t usually. It’s sort of a hoot but sounds more like a phone on vibrate
What a privledge to watch magical creatures grow up
I was feeling a little sad that the family of Tawny Frogmouths I’ve been watching grow up had moved on from their nest site, even if it wasn’t surprising due to over the fence of a primary school being suboptimal for creatures who sleep during the day. I was just walking in another part of the neighbourhood and spotted a Tawny. Could be one of my friends, but they look like they’re nesting so could also be a new family with a late group of babies which would be delightful.
This is my first time spotting a Tawny in a new location without any assistance (up high and in low light no less). That feels like a major milestone towards being a skilled birder!
My newest tawny frogmouth friend has stayed in the same spot so I’m hopeful that means she’s nesting and I’ll soon get to see another group of adorable muppets
No one does unimpressed side eye like a tawny. Seems the rainbow lorikeets were getting on their nerves
I was starting to wonder if I was imagining one of the nearby Tawny Frogmouths could be nesting given it’s quite late in the baby season (the other tawny families around here fledged a month ago) and I wasn’t seeing much change at the nest. Going out in the super hot weather to check was rewarded. I was delighted to meet new local muppets!
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildoz #TawnyFrogmouth
While staring up into a tree looking at the tawny frogmouth nest I’ve been watching for a while a stranger walking past told me about another group of them nearby. It’s not the first time this has happened, I’ve similarly bestowed knowledge of our tawny friends on others I’ve met while bird watching. Loving these birds is like participating in the world’s most delightful and cooperative treasure hunt

Instead, they constantly rotate their behavior to stay adaptable, a strategy researchers call the "edge of chaos." This built-in resistance to becoming machine-like helps the #birds adapt to changing environments.

Climber of the Quiet Tree
This image of a male red‑bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is from my backyard. I’m curious about the feathers on its throat—they’re so bright and white that they almost blend into the fence behind it. It’s probably just the lighting; the sky was overcast, and sometimes I really have to crank up the ISO. Still, I like the effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s visually striking.

Our rain water tank has a bird's bath underneath the tap because it leaks. This issue has become an important feature. The constant slow dripping of the tap supplies the bird's bath with fresh water. As a result birds, mostly house sparrows, use it as their drinking spot. It is quite literally their water cooler / coffee corner & you can see them chatting, eating & gossiping around it. It's a lovely thing to observe & great to start the morning with.

A quintet of California quail dropped by the house over the weekend — a first, though I've seen them in the neighborhood before. They're very round! Please check out #BirdersOfPalestine 🕊🇵🇸💖
Every spring and autumn, millions of birds fly over #Palestine , an important stopover for hundreds of migratory species traveling between their wintering grounds in Africa and their breeding sites in Europe and Asia. The region is one of the world’s busiest flyways.
The birds soar over Palestinians living in “the world’s largest open-air prison” in Gaza – besieged for decades and now subjected to genocide – and over Palestinians living under occupation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. But Israel’s increasingly brutal system of oppression hasn’t stopped #Palestinians from raising their heads high to admire the birds filling the sky.
In Gaza, #birders Lara and Mandy Sirdah have continued to watch and photograph birds, even during the genocide. Forced to leave their homes in northern #Gaza in November 2023 after Israeli expulsion orders, the twin sisters have continued publishing photos of the birds they found in displacement.
