Finally got my hands on a copy of the Wingspan Americas expansion and it's so much fun. Definitely a brain teaser at the beginning because there are so many moving parts, but the hummingbirds are both powerful and flexible. I even logged a personal best on our second game!
Played Concordia with @PlaidInvader last night. He won but we did the scoring wrong. There's an issue with having a lot of #boardgames and an old brain. If you haven't played a game for a while it takes a bit to remember the rules. The pattern is something like this; Let's play A, that's a fun game. Ok do we remember how? Hmm, this is more complex than I remember. Is this really how it goes? Oh wait, yes, that's right. Got it. This is fun.
Making my own lazy-ish dice game.
Inspired by some board game versions of dungeon crawlers, I wanted a "pure text" version. Something I can play on grid paper with a stash of dice.
This is version 1ish, and I cannot beleive it actually worked to a Boss fight the first round in! (Well I can, I designed the first round that way sort of, one could get a Dragle in stage 2 by statistics.) I did not roll enemies on that last round, conflicted if I should next time or default to Boss.
I am also deciding on ways to bring back party after burnoffs in stages if they are successful in their loot or enemy fight, like each round if I rolled a natural max attack for that character, I could revive them unless they fizzled.
I did chose to make them unavailable to potions for one round if they fail, however. I might replace scrolls with potions or add potion to scroll.
I haven't even designed the tavern rules yet, so it worked well! LOL
It isn't meant to be hardcore, nor super easy, just getting a higher score.
Could make it multiplayer and each roll their own party, but the enemy sets would be played individually in parallel with the goal getting a higher score.
Next steps-
I want to make the Tavern or Trading Post or Town Square or something where you can purchase potions maybe with currency. I may change the D4 on the Trunkle to a higher D with weights so we aren't getting as much gold chance since it is 5xSilver, and 25xTrinket pricing.
Scrolls need to be made for modifiers like rerolls, plus X attacks with Y Members, etc.
Maybe using potions with a Mage subdues them for 1 turn as a sacrifice sort of.
A LOT Packed in this sheet.
PS, I have never tried something like this, the weights and stats might be super dumb. I loved yahtzee as a kid, only recently tinkered in DnD with friend the last few years, and not very much.
People are rightfully roasting Awaken Realms' lazy Concordia: AI Art Edition on BGG reviews, but I find it funny how the AI art defenders like to parrot, "If you don't like it, don't buy it," as if that means people aren't allowed to voice their opinions as well.

Boardgame nerds of the fediverse. Recommend me good boardgames that work for upto 6 players? Ideally something that doesn't take several hours to setup and explain the rules.

I have a previous game (Steam Up) and as beautiful, well designed, and well made as it is, the biggest part of it is the care for Asian culture they offer.
As they state on their site, which is reflected in the design process and end product: We craft culturally rich tabletop games that evoke nostalgia and spark curiosity about Asian culture, delivering meaningful and engaging experiences to every table.

The latest video from Zilla Blitz is up but it isn't about war games. I learned from watching it that he is from #Minnesota and he needed to record his thoughts about what's happening there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwWjbq4tm3o
He goes to great lengths to say he understands people want to discuss games as an escape but he also feels very strongly about the situation. I also learned he is on mastodon as @zillablitz

I have enjoyed watching a lot of his review videos for his clarity and enthusiasm.
Here's your #boardgame #forecast for tomorrow. Hat tip to @steggy for the inspiration.

There's a certain point at which Castles of Burgundy is a gateway game. Not necessarily to #boardgames as such, but to that deeper level of Euro games. Had the pleasure of introducing a couple of casual gamers this last weekend.
Played some games on Monday. We kicked the year off with some lighter stuff. I think we were all still recovering from the holidays.
#PandaRoyale has become a favorite of mine. What's more fun than rolling a fistful of dice?
I bought #Ink for my wife on a whim. I saw the artsy theme and the cute little bottles and knew she needed it. It's a tight little abstract game with some satisfying tile laying. We like it!
I requested we play #MachiKoro2. I had only played it once. After playing other similar games, I can comfortably say it's pretty mediocre. I wish the artwork could represent the actions better. The game gets a little bogged down towards the end when everyone is trying to read all their powers as to not miss anything.
We ended the night with #Babylon. I suck at this game. But it looks pretty.

Hello. For the sake of honesty, Georgiana Brummell is not my legal name, but it is what I use. I live in New Jersey and am forty-two years old. Some of my interests include studying dandyism, nineteenth-century English grammar, Upper Received Pronunciation, the Italian language, British history, the Regency, opera, and MS-DOS. I like coffee, tea, wine, cooking, hot baths, reading British literature, watching nature and historical documentaries, gardening, old BBC radio shows, hot weather, and playing cards and dice. I love opera, particularly singers from the 1940-s and earlier, and I adore the tenore di grazia and lyric tenor voice types. I also enjoy English and Viennese operettas. In classical music, I like Baroque through a bit of early Romantic, while in popular, I like 1950's through 1970's. I prefer antique menswear and accessories (no feminine clothing). It's my dream to either buy a genuine Edwardian suit or have one commissioned. I love wit, wordplay, and dry humour without vulgarity. I am happily childfree, am not religious, speak my mind and am against political correctness. I also love cats. I have been totally blind since I was two months old, due to Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Happy Punching Day. It's like Boxing Day. Its origins go back to Victorian grognards and players of #boardgames who would prepare their new games. They'd drink wassail and their servants would punch out the cardboard tokens from the sprues. Traditionally, if none of the tokens tore while coming out of the frames that meant good dice rolls for the coming year. In those days ziplock bags were made of hedgehog stomachs and wren beeks.

Played some ANTS yesterday: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/446699
it's basically "Ant Nova". Fun game, medium to high complexity, just takes a bit too long for my taste. With 3 players we played 3.5 hours.
The actions are easy to understand, but putting them together to win is what makes it complex.
I personally prefer the a bit shorter and more 4x oriented "March of the ants"

One good thing about my work is we usually have a big card game / board game lunch at the end of the year.
This year was dominated by ‘The Red Dragon Inn’ which I hadn’t played before, but seemed good fun. Lots of flavour as the players drink silly drinks (including dishwater at one point), gamble, and try and outlast each other.
Good times!
Tonight's boardgame was Ticket to Ride: Europe. According to my app its been over two years since we last played it - we got a bit tired of it as we played it quite a lot. I had to use a station very early on, which set the tone for my game. I completed all my routes but they were quite broken up, so I didn't even bother to count my trains for the longest route at the end. I scored around my average though.

Christmas/advent boardgame no.2: Hive. I was looking up some rules for solo play when offspring no.2 turned up so we played together, and they won!

Yesterday for our weekly #gameday, we played a "big stupid game of Carcassonne." We threw almost all the expansions in and let 'er rip!
It took us about 5 and a half hours. The number of little rules to keep track of was overwhelming. We were tired of it about 2 hours in, but we pressed on anyway. We finished it. And at the end, the winner had over 300 points. And none of us really cared anymore.
But our group always enjoys each other's company, so it was still a good time.
Carcassonne is a favorite of mine, and always will be. But don't do this. I rate Big Stupid Carcassonne a 4/10.

Take this recommendation with a grain of salt if you want, because the designer is a pal, but Even At Odds is a really fun 2 player, abstract-ish game you can play with a single set of normal dominoes https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cNaTXw2IMUE3pk4g3QzkEVZM9d5KsXqizgD6tkP2Riw/edit?usp=drivesdk

We later expanded this work and landed it as a chapter in a 2008 book Multiobjective Problem Solving from Nature, which is downloadable from https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-540-72964-8 . You'll see the chapter starting on page 357 of that PDF (p 361 in the PDF's pagination). We applied a technique from the theory of coevolutionary algorithms to examine small instances of the game of Nim, and were able to make several interesting statements about that game. Arthur Samuel's original papers on checkers were about learning by self-play, a particularly simple form of coevolutionary algorithm, as I argue in the introductory chapter of my PhD dissertation. Our technique is applicable to Samuel's work and any other work in that class--in other words, it's squarely "machine learning" in the sense Samuel meant the term.
Whatever you may think of this particular work of mine, it's bad news when a field forgets and rejects its own historical origins and throws away the early fruitful lines of work that led to its own birth. #GenerativeAI threatens to have a similar wilting effect on artificial intelligence and possibly on computer science more generally. The marketplace of ideas is monopolizing, the ecosystem of ideas collapsing. Not good.
