Philippines Electricity The Most Expensive In ASEAN

Due to the low supply of electricity and the high demand recorded this past June, the Philippines had the most expensive electricity rates among member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to a news report by GMA News.

Be reminded that the Philippines is experiencing weak economic growth, high inflation, and has been weak when it comes to attracting foreign direct investment. Could imagine how foreign investors would react to the expensive electricity here in the Philippines?

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the GMA News report. Some parts in boldface…

The Philippines had the most expensive electricity rates among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in June due to low supply and high demand recorded during the month, the Department of Energy (DOE) reported Monday.

According to DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara, the country reported an average rate of P12.43 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in June, surpassing that of Singapore by P0.093 per kilowatt-hour.

“Sa Visayas, siya talaga ‘yung pinakamahal dahil talagang may kakulangan tayo sa supply doon. Meron tayong 21 plants na naka-forced outage and therefore, dependent siya talaga sa Luzon at sa Mindanao for imported power,” she said in a virtual briefing.

(Visayas was really the most expensive because there was really a lack of supply there. There are 21 plants on forced outage, and therefore, it is really dependent on imported power from Luzon and Mindanao.)

“Alam niyo naman, naka-yellow alert sila palagi (As you know, they have been on yellow alert regularly) since May 13, and that is the one that is driving the price high for Visayas,” she added.

The Visayas grid has been on yellow alert — indicating that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement — for several days in June, due to the continued forced outage of major coal plants in the region.

Among the outages recorded were Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) units 1 and 2 and Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC).

“For the rest… Meron kasi din tayong mga matataas na demand during the summer months, and therefore we have to operate the more expensive power plants. Imbes na mag-blackout, paandarin na lang ‘yung mga medyo mahal na plant,” Guevara said.

(For the rest… Demand was also high during the summer months, and therefore, we have to operate the more expensive power plants. Instead of blackouts, we ran more expensive plants.)

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? What do you think must be done to ensure abundant electricity for the Filipinos? Are you convinced now is the time for the government of the Philippines to go all-in on nuclear power? How much was your electric bill this past June?

I have a friend whose wife was severely for 6 months. Ran a lot of tests. Nothing. The few attempts at treatment didn't work.

As a long shot, they uploaded the record into (back in later 2024).

ChatGPT didn't say "you have X", unlike your farcical claim of 'ligma (balls)'.

I've accused of terminating grants (and other grants) by using dumb keyword searches to look for prohibited words. It turns out that DOGE used dumb prompts instead. Like this one (quoting verbatim): “Does the following relate at all to D.E.I.? Respond factually in less than 120 characters. Begin with ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’”

I had to do some inventory tasks for today at a remote . I was listening to on the drive home and the discussion was on , specifically on how the titans like , , , and have quietly stepped away from mechanisms as their models improve, the implications, and . While the quiet distancing from safety is of obvious concern, the discussion on regulation caught my attention.

As one host put it (paraphrasing here) you'd think these companies don't want regulation but that's not necessarily the case. They are looking for regulation that favors them, whether it's getting in bed with the government or squashing out the competition. The bottom line is still about maximizing profits.

The last part was some interesting food for thought and it makes sense. If correct, it's some good indication of where they (and we) are headed.

On the flip side, and these still make mistakes that, unless you have at least *some* previously acquired knowledge on said topic, are believable.

Over the next few days Claude challenged every single one

It privileges a kind of performative intellectualism—the ability to stand at a whiteboard and extemporize about science as if you were some kind of 19th-century naturalist who had personally observed the phenomena in question.

This is not how science works anymore.

A useful mechanism for kids to think better thoughts, in the same way any interlocutor can be a staircase to deeper thinking.

                                                      - We are in the foothills of AI.

It is industrializing and devaluing human expression, artistry and craftsmanship. Creatives are losing their jobs and motivation because tech corporations unscrupulously absorb and exploit their work.

Tech corporations are building more and more huge Al data centers, consuming lots of internet bandwidth, energy, water and other valuable resources, increasing scarcity, prices and emissions, degrading the already fragile environment.

When you're using an LLM like a chatbot or image generator, every bit of data you submit helps build a personal profile of you and your relatives, contributing to the power and reach of corporations and governments, and decreasing your privacy and security.

Generative Al enables fake images, videos, text and speech that are widely used for abuse, deception, cybercrime, misinformation and propaganda, polluting safety, justice, science, news reporting and much more.

Al use outsources your thinking and decision-making. Challenging your brain is essential to maintain mental agility, and to avoid Al dependency. Increasingly leaving tasks up to chatbots and gen-Al will result in a decline of skills, problem-solving capacity, independence and self-confidence.

Those paying for apps that utilise ChatGPT or other generative AI services can receive daily tips on preparation, putting them on what appears to be a bespoke path to race day. Yet Chris Beavers, a real-life personal trainer, said these plans are “based on the average of what [AI] thinks is best”, with no “constant feedback” each week.

While I've largely used and some when researching and stuff, I'd say has come a long way. Are they perfect? No. Is it a replacement for man pages and the Handbook? No. Can they provide more info, context, and real world examples when the official falls short? That's a resounding yes.

It's been a while since I've seen AI give utterly incorrect info relating to FreeBSD. I am far from being the FreeBSD god I want to be and even I recognized the incorrect info at those particular times. But this was also a good 1.5 years ago.

Now I have been given extra finance tasks (not in my job description) and tighter KPI's for daily tasks.
