#COVID continues to heavily influence my #quilting
Like this top I finished today, many of my quilts are scrappy designs so I can use fabrics from my stash instead of shopping in person for new fabric and many of my quilt designs include words because I metaphorically lost my voice when isolating for my immunocompromised partner’s health became imperative
6+ years on I’m still screaming inside my heart

You may have Long Covid or you may be Novid.
You may have been engaging in consistent Covid safety practices since 2020, or you may have just started properly avoiding Covid recently.
You may have a shitty job that forces you to be maskless in order to stay employed. You may share a household with people who don't avoid the plague like the plague.
But as much as possible, you wear a respirator mask in public. People thinking you look weird or peer pressure isn't enough to make you go maskless. You would only risk another infection with a possibly permanently destructive virus if you feared losing your income, or feared violence, or had to get a medical procedure where you couldn't be masked the whole time.
You absolutely would never go inside a restaurant to eat ever again. Restaurant food can be takeout or delivery. Food can be cooked at home.
Whether you've been infected several times or never, you know the best course of action is to avoid as many infections in the future as possible because the harm is cumulative.
Whether or not you keep vaxxed, you understand that the vaccine doesn't stop infection, you still must wear a respirator mask.
You understand the importance of good indoor ventilation and filtering, but you know a public place with a good air quality rating doesn't mean it's safe to take your respirator mask off. You know people get infected outdoors too if they're very close to other people.
When I tell you that Dr. Hoerger's data shows there's more Covid spreading now than at any point in 2020, you're saddened but you're not shocked. You know Covid is far from over.
And if this applies to you and you actually avoid the plague like the plague, chances are dating websites will be hostile to you if you mention Covid safety.
People have anecdotally had a hard time finding romance on CovidMeetups, because it's not really a dating website but a better place to meet friends or find dentists.

Right now, out there are parents of severely disabled children who don't mask because their doctors told them that "it is not necessary". There are nurses telling them that they don't need to vaccinate, and scare them with "vaccine injuries". So, these parents are getting their vunerable kids re-infected with respiratory viruses over and over again, and the kids are the ones suffering the most and being pasted in social media because their parents remain clueless of covid.
Trying to remember the last time husband and I were sick with anything, other than temporary vaccine side effects (and one time we got sick from duck eggs, either poorly cooked or a previously unknown allergy).
Why wouldn’t people prefer not to get sick? Wearing a respirator is so easy to do.
I loved seeing so much support for covid safety & long covid at the community connecting event today!

How is it possible for hospitals, nursing homes and other health-care employers to allow respiratory PPE that doesn’t fit the legal standard previously set for protecting workers against an airborne hazard?
Simple. They just fail to explicitly state the virus is airborne.

i can't help but feel that COVID was a test we failed. like, we could have risen to the moment and discarded our petty individualism and committed to changing our ways of life - perhaps permanently! - to ensure the safety of our communities
it was such a simple thing, and we *knew* exactly what we had to do, and we just... didn't. even most people who made masking their entire personalities during 2020 gave it up as soon as biden green lighted woke COVID denialism
🤔 I predict in less than a week this facility will be in lockdown.
Thank you to the folk who won't wear a mask 😷 while visiting Grandma or Grandpa.
👉 Someday I hope you realize you are contagious before you show symptoms, and though Grandma and Grampa were frail and old, they wanted to live longer,
the same as you.

Scientific American: COVID probably killed 150,000 more people in its first two years than official U.S. tolls show
We have severely undercounted the number of COVID deaths, scientists say (March 18, 2026)
Hi, these are the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots. A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.
The West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant's 7 day running average of its detected Sars-CoV-2 levels is low. The last calculation was made on 3/10. Note: the wastewater numbers for the three King County sites didn't get updated last week, but it looks like they have been backfilled now.
WSPT is one of three King County(-ish) sewersheds in this dataset. You can find overviews, individual sewershed results, and a breakdown of variants for the state wastewater surveillance program, along with other metrics like case counts and hospitalizations for Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, at https://doh.wa.gov/data-and-statistical-reports/diseases-and-chronic-conditions/communicable-disease-surveillance-data/respiratory-illness-data-dashboard#WasteWater. If you go to the page and click "learn more" in the statewide view tab, you can find out lots of details about how these data are calculated and how to interpret them. The dashboard gets updated every Wednesday (generally). The Department of Health is here on the fediweb, at @WADeptHealth

Talking to the medical office admin today, telling them I noticed their office airflow seemed good, an important mitigation measure.
Talking about covid.
They mentioned that they have had covid 6 times, so far, they said.

"That's right. Not so far."

Good news, folks! mRNA vaccines don't cause "turbo cancers" — first, because those don't exist, and second, because mRNA technology has been studied for decades and large population studies have found no increased cancer risk at all following vaccination. Here's more from @TheConversationUS on how the rapid spread of vaccine misinformation is threatening the development of this potentially transformative technology.

This is the absolute worst time to have the most awful people in charge of public health. To be fair, Biden let us down to start with: gave in to pressure for profit. When banks made catastrophic terrible decisions in 2008, we had hundreds of billions to bail them out. When poor people needed healthcare and protection from COVID, it was important to take our lumps and get back to work.
Sorry for the substack link, but now they're literally deleting data on #COVID so we can't even know what happened.
People will still die. Turning off the measurement doesn't mean they don't die.
COVID infections are not harmless. Research shows that initial and repeated COVID-19 infections can increase the risk of long-term health problems affecting multiple organ systems. Preventing infection and reinfection helps reduce these risks.

Just in case you forgot - SARS-CoV-2 dramatically alters cells. Not embellishment, but the words of the researchers:
SARS-CoV-2 infection induces global alterations of the host endomembrane system, including dramatic Golgi fragmentation
The virus shatters and scatters critical cellular pieces - this time my words. Them:
In contrast to the well-organized ribbon-like structure in uninfected cells, as labeled by the Golgi protein GRASP65, the Golgi was seen as small fragments dispersed in the entire cytoplasm in infected cells

The ability to use syncytia to spread is not unique but I feel it's pretty up there in importance, because it means the evolutionary landscape includes pockets where that's the main within-host mechanism, and (if I understand right) it exposes less antigen to the immune system.
Also it's ACE2-indepdendant.
TMEM106B is a functional receptor for SARS-CoV-2 across multiple Omicron variants to support both virus entry and syncytia formation, particularly in ACE2-low expressing cell https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jmv.70439
(if any nerds want it, https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/17/11/1405 is an excellent overview of synctia in SARS2 and https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0326419 reviewed some genes which "mediate ACE2-independent entry of SARS-CoV-2")
Unsurprisingly, you'll find my own website and blog (with entries going back close to 25 years) at https://www.mediaactivist.com where you can find out more about me. But for now here's a fresh #introduction! I'm a Britain-based #solarpunk passionate about helping to make the world a better place through the liberatory power of multimedia technology, particularly DIY media such as non-centralised social networks and good old fashioned #zines. My "day job" is freelancing mostly in non-profits while caring for my partner, who has myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) caused by #Covid she contracted six years ago today. By "night," I continue to work on something called The SilenceBreaker: https://silencebreaker.mediaactivist.com
COVID-19 was associated with an estimated 290,000 to 450,000 hospitalizations and 34,000 to 53,000 deaths in the US last year (July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025).

COVID is not “just a cold.” Even mild or asymptomatic infections can cause lasting health effects, damaging blood vessels and organs, affecting the brain, and weakening the immune system. Reduce possible harm by avoiding infection and reinfection — preventing COVID is possible through measures such as masking, ventilation, testing and vaccination.
News-packed update on nextgen Covid vaccines this month at my @PLOS blog:
