This has me feeling like my entire existence doesn’t matter. All the work I have done to support and build up OUR community seems to not matter at all.

Now this roll out of disabling accounts and asking for video selfies to prove identity are going to leave a lot of those people in a quandary. Submit a selfie or lose connection to community.
I refuse, and i'm not sad about no longer being able to access facebook because I am done with the trolls and bots. But I am devastated that i've instantly lost connection to local groups and old friends with whom I never exchanged numbers, because we relied on facebook.
I dont know how to build community without it.
I mean I know i'll get over it, i'll find other ways of connecting and i'm sure I can ask my eldest daughter to message old friends with my number for me, but right now this feels incredibly cruel and intentional. Meta know that people will panic about losing their communities and connections and upload those video selfies.

Hooray! 🎉And now for some good news - Spain has followed in Australia's steps and is banning social media for under-16-year-olds starting from next week, and says it is due to meet with 4 other neighbouring nations considering doing the same to talk cross-border cooperative rules.

Für heute habe ich mir #Youtube vor genommen. Hochladen ist #dudit, aber das Ansehen! Das ist richtig fies, die Timeline schafft es immer mal wieder, mich zu fesseln. Am Besten, es gibt keine Grund Youtube zu starten. Und da sind wir bei der Follow-Klocke. Wenn die Videos nun mal sonst nirgends zu sehen sind? Auf dem iPad gibt es auch keine Werbefreimach-App.
Bei meinen Gefolgten sind einige aus den Öffentlichen, die doch gefälligst ihr Material in der Mediathek ablegen sollten. Da fehlt dann wieder die "Folgen-App”. Sollte technisch möglich sein, muß nur mal einer machen |-)

My biggest concern about leaving Facebook and Twitter (years ago now) was losing touch with my friends. As it turns out, my actual friends made the effort to stay in touch via other means, the rest were people who pretty much only communicated via likes and emojis.
Those people aren't your friends. They're just internet acquaintance that you exchange compliments with. You'll be fine without them, trust me.

Today I deleted #facebook icon from my mobile. Also X (though I barely used it), TikTok (the same)... although I still have a step to make to actually delete most of the social media, not so much because of #fomo , just because I keep in touch with various people on various platforms - I am realizing the truth I know already: who wants to get in touch with you, they will find a way.
Currently, I am mostly here on Mastodon.

Meanwhile on #Facebook some old boomer climate denier challenged me to drive my EV to Europe and see who wins.
Fully charged my #EV will do around 270 miles. My chosen driving route would be via Hull and the North Sea Ferries; however let's see... Dover is 232 miles away. Even on a very cold day with heaters running I'd make the terminal with about 5% energy left.
That means I can drive quite a few miles into France and even make it into Belgium before needing a charge - and that's if we go #Eurotunnel.
You see, that's the problem. They don't actually have the slightest clue what they're on about. They believe the #dailymail , #telegraph and the other right wing papers, meanwhile I drive around in a 285bhp van which will quite happily 0-60 most cars and takes me to Wolverhampton and back without me even thinking of charging.
The world has moved on. They haven't, and soon it's going to be embarrassing.

The most annoying thing about corporate surveillance to me is the arrogance of the prediction mechanisms.
These algorithms build a model of me based on my clicks from three years ago and then try to trap me in that loop forever. They show me music they think I'll like, and news they think I'll engage with, and videos they think will enrage me enough to keep me hooked to their platforms. They are actively trying to flatten my personality into something easy to monetize.
As most people I've seen say out loud, "Privacy as a concept is way beyond hiding secrets. A part of it also means preserving your capacity to change. To be surprised. To be inconsistent."
If I could tell every human one thing, it would be to actively refuse to be a predictable data point. Mess up their metrics. In whatever way you are capable of.

The thing that will kill creep glasses this time is the same thing that killed them last time (Google Glass, remember those?) - public opprobrium.
If you see anyone wearing them, assume they are recording (because they can hide that fact if they want) -- and then, more importantly, ensure everyone around *knows* the creep is recording them without permission.
Do this loudly and visibly. Stop, point directly at them, and yell "HEY, GLASSHOLE - STOP RECORDING PEOPLE WITHOUT PERMISSION" and continue by telling everyone "Hey, that guy <points> is recording people"...
Humiliate them, publicly. Shame them. Ostracize them. If someone you know is using them, go hard, and make sure everyone else you know knows they are doing it.
That is what will make them stop. Make the personal cost to their dignity, social acceptance, embarassment, everything total out more than the creepy voyeurism is worth, and they will drop it like a hot potato.
