Today in Labor History July 26, 1937: Photojournalist and antifascist Gerda Taro was killed while covering the Spanish Civil War. She was 26. Thousands attended her funeral. Taro was a German Jew, who had to flee Germany after being imprisoned for her anti-Nazi activism. While living in exile, in France, she met another Jewish exile and photojournalist, Endre Ernő Friedmann. Together they published their work under the pseudonym Robert Capa. Scholar Hanno Hardt described their work as such: "Taro and Capa helped invent the genre of modern war photography while fueling the vicarious experience of the spectator by offering an approximation of life in the conflict zone."

After Taro’s death, Friedmann would retain the name Robert Capa and go on to become recognized as one of the greatest photojournalists ever. In 1947, he cofounded the Magnum photojournalism cooperative, which included other great photographers, like Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and William and Rita Vandivert.

Madrid and Paris both named streets for Taro, Calle Gerda Taro and Rue Gerda Taro, respectively.
Helena Janeczek portrayed Taro in her historical novel, The Girl With the Leica (1917).

Today in Labor History July 26, 1877: Federal troops killed up to 30 workers at the "Battle of the Viaduct," Chicago, during the Great Upheaval (AKA Great Train Strike). This came after the Workingmen’s Party (affiliated with the First International), organized a rally of six thousand people. At this gathering, a former Confederate Army Officer from Waco, Texas, named Albert Parsons, gave a fiery speech. The events of the Great Upheaval radicalized Parsons and his wife Lucy. In the years following it, they became some of the nation’s leading anarchist organizers. The state executed him in 1887 as one of the Haymarket Martyrs who had been fighting for the eight-hour workday. His widow, Lucy, an African American woman, went on to cofound the radical Industrial Workers of the World, in 1905, along with Mother Jones, Eugene Debs, Big Bill Haywood, and others.

The day after Parsons’ speech, protests erupted. Police fired into the crowd, killing three men. The next day, an armed demonstration of 5,000 workers fought the police and soldiers in the Battle of the Viaduct, when they killed as many as 30 more workers and injured over one hundred. One journalist wrote, “The sound of clubs falling on skulls was sickening for the first minute, until one grew accustomed to it. A rioter dropped at every whack, it seemed, for the ground was covered with them.” A judge later found the police guilty of preventing the workers from exercising their right to freedom of speech and assembly

The Great Upheaval was a national strike wave involving major uprisings in Martinsburg, WV, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, San Francisco, Boston, Reading, PA, New York and many other cities. I write about it in my historical “Great Upheaval Trilogy.” My first book, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” takes place in the years immediately preceding the Great Upheaval. Book II, “Red Hot Summer in the Smoky City,” my current WIP, takes place in Pittsburgh, at the height of the Great Upheaval.

I was interested in this list - as a start. The only ones I have read are the McEwan, Spark and the Solzhenitsyn (in translation and a school text which I have re read and still have the school copy - whoops). Do others have recommendations for ‘short’ reads as opposed to short stories?

Deep in the computer's memory, a message from the crew (the real, human crew) -- left 200 years ago.

"...it soon became apparently that there *was no* Earth 2.0. There never was one. It was clear, we would die here on the ship. The decision was made to upload our consciousness into the robot clones we'd made of ourselves, to try to keep humanity's memory alive. Because of the torture of an eternity on this ship, every four weeks, a complete memory reset was programmed into the system; you've been living the same month of your life since you were created, and would continue to for the next 100, 200, 500, 1000 years--as long as the ship's power sources held out. The human crew completed this task and jettisoned themselves into space.... if you're reading this, something went wrong, and somehow you discovered our shame and what we really did..."

If that’s prize-winning, no wonder it’s not my favourite genre.)

These results seem obvious to us now, but back then, people were, on the whole, not very bright.”

The mine owners were demanding a 10-hour day without an increase in pay. In response, the miners went on strike. There was considerable violence from both sides during the strike, led by the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). On March 16, some miners ambushed, shot and beat some sheriff’s deputies. The judge, a WFM member, let the miners off, but charged the deputies with carrying concealed weapons. Furious, the Sheriff arrested 20 union leaders. Meanwhile, the mine owners conspired to bring in hundreds of scabs and deputized vigilantes. When the new deputies marched on the strikers’ camp, the miners blew up several mine structures, forcing the deputies to flee. The mine owners hired hundreds more vigilantes for their army. When he heard about the size of the miner owners’ force, the governor declared the deputies illegal and sent in state troops to defend the miners.

On June 5, the day before the state troops arrived, the mine owners’ army began cutting telegraph lines and arresting and beating reporters and hundreds of town residents, including many who weren’t miners. When the state troops arrived, there were already gun battles going on between the vigilante army and the miners. However, the state troops gained control of the town relatively quickly and the mine owners disbanded their army and sent them home. 300 miners were arrested, but only four were convicted. And the populist governor pardoned them all. The WFM won, keeping the 8-hour day and their $3/day wages. And, they were so popular because of their victory, that they easily organized most of the other industries in the region (e.g., waitresses, laundry workers, bartenders, newsboys) into 54 new locals.

The Cripple Creek strike was a prelude for the Colorado Labor Wars (1903-1904), led by future IWW cofounded Big Bill Haywood, and the Colorado Coalfield War (1913-1914), which historian Thomas G. Andrews called the “deadliest strike in the history of the United States” and which included the Ludlow Massacre. Hundreds were killed in the Coalfield War. During the Labar Wars of 1903-1904, James McParland ran the Pinkerton agency in Denver. He had served as an agent provocateur in the Pennsylvania miners’ union in the 1870s. The state convicted and executed 20 innocent Irish coal miners because of his testimony. (I have depicted that story in my novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill.”) Like he did in Pennsylvania, McParlan tried to sabotage the WFM by placing spies and agents provocateur within the union.

The riots began as a pogrom against Catholics. However, it grew into a mass worker insurrection that included ex-slaves, impressed sailors and debtors, English, Irish, Italians, Germans and Jews. The insurrectionists liberated two thousand prisoners and destroyed every major prison in London, including Newgate, Fleet and The Clink. They wrote on the prison walls, “Freed by the Authority of His Majesty, King Mob." Rioters also destroyed the homes members of the ruling elite, as well as toll houses and the Bank of England. The rich fled the city in terror. Many were robbed and beaten along the way. It was the most destructive protest in the history of London. The military was called in. They slaughtered up to 700 workers. The political context for the insurrection included low wages and inflation due to England’s wars with the U.S., Spain and France, as well as the desire for universal suffrage.

At the time of the Gordon Riots, England was still battling American revolutionaries in North America, and was still in conflict with France and Spain, and would soon be in conflict with the Dutch. They had been in secret negotiations with Spain to try and get them to end support for the United States. But the Spanish pulled back in response to the anti-Catholic nature of the riots, and over concerns that the riots would ultimately bring down the British government. At the time, Britain had no official police force, which parliament believed was a foreign and absolutist entity. The riots changed that, with several now strongly advocating for a police force modeled after the French. Radical journalist and MP John Wilkes lost a great deal of popular support for leading a violent citizens militia against the rioters.

Charles Dickens' novel “Barnaby Rudge” (1841) is set during Gordon Riots. And the film “The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle” has a scene from the Gordon Riots, with the Sex Pistols being hung in effigy. In the late 1960s, there was a Situationist group in the UK that called themselves “King Mob,” which had connections to the activist groups Black Mask and Against Up the Wall Motherfuckers (AKA the Motherfuckers) dadaist/Situationist groups based in New York city. Motherfuckers got their name from an Amiri Baraka poem. Abbie Hoffman referred to them as “the middle-class nightmare.” In 1967, they Motherfuckers forced their way into the Pentagon and flung blood, eggs and stones at US Secretary of State Dean Rusk. In January 1968, they dumped uncollected refuse from the Lower East Side into the fountain at Lincoln Center. They also forced Bill Graham to provide free concert nights at the Fillmore East. At an MC5 show at the Fillmore East, the broke Graham’s nose, which got the MC5 banned from the venue. And in 1969, they cut the fences at Woodstock, allowing thousands to get in for free.

Today in Labor History May 18, 1781: Tupac Amaru II was drawn and quartered in Plaza Mayor del Cuzco, Peru. Tupac II had led a large indigenous uprising against the Spanish conquistadors. As a result of his heroic efforts, he became an inspiration to others in the fight for indigenous rights and against colonialism. The uprising began because of “reforms” by the colonial administration that increased taxes and labor demands on both indigenous and creole populations. However, there was also an ongoing desire to overthrow European rule and restore the pre-conquest Incan empire. And though this would merely replace one feudal power with another, there were also Jacobin and proto-communist elements to the rebellion. Most of the Tupamarista soldiers were poor peasants, artisans and women who saw the uprising as an opportunity to create an egalitarian society, without the cast and class divisions of either the Spanish or Incan feudal systems.

The uprising began with the execution of Spanish colonial Governor Antonio de Arriaga by his own slave, Antonio Oblitas. Tupac Amaru II then made a proclamation claiming to be fighting against the abuses of Spain and for the peace and well-being of Indians, mestizos, mambos, native-born whites and blacks. They then proceeded to march toward Cuzco, killing Spaniards and looting their properties. Everywhere they went, they overthrew the Spanish authority. Tupac’s wife, Michaela Bastidas commanded a battalion of insurgents. Many claimed she was more daring and a superior strategist than her husband.

However, despite their strength and courage, the rebels failed to take Cuzco. The Spaniards brought in reinforcements from Lima. Many creoles abandoned the Inca army and joined the Spanish, fearing for their own safety after seeing the wanton slaughter of Spanish civilians. In the end, Tupac was betrayed by two of his officers and handed over to the Spanish. However, before they killed him, the Spanish forced him to watch them execute his wife, eldest son, uncle, brother-in-law, and several of his captains. They cut out both his wife’s and son’s tongue before hanging them.

As a result of Tupac’s leadership and success against the Spanish, he became a mythical figure in the Peruvian struggle for independence and in the indigenous rights movement. The Tupamaros revolutionary movement in Uruguay (1960s-1970s) took their name from him. As did the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary guerrilla group, in Peru, and the Venezuelan Marxist political party Tupamaro. American rapper, Tupac Amaru Shakur, was also named after him. Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, wrote a poem called “Tupac Amaru (1781).” And Clive Cussler’s book, “Inca Gold,” has a villain who claims to be descended from the revolutionary leader.
