had a chat recently on the topic of #building for yourself vs building for the #opensource #foss #community

#software to me is simply a tool to solve a problem. mostly my own problems. like many, problem-sets are often unique and don't have a one-size-fits-all.

one project in particular was me taking what i learned from running #deltachat relays and contributing upstream and making a very niche lean single-binary relay that's compatible with upstream. why? because i wanted to and i felt upstream was too many moving parts and decisions that don't align with what i want to be working on.

as soon as i released the binary to a few trusted testers the feedback was, "this is great, but upstream does this, or you should make it more scale-proof (noting that 70rps was too slow) for the community"

not one to be reactive, i thought about it for a few days. then decide no, i'm not changing anything. i built this for fun and learning, not for a community.

once i release this, the community is free to do with it whatever they like. fork it, light it on fire, crochet jorts, whatevs.

maybe this would have been a good paule f*ck you pay me situation. i donno anymore.

Codeberg voting members have the right to decide the policy of their association, and I understand if a community is averse to anything that is AI- or Web3-related. I understand it, but I don't agree with it, because it's 2026, and if you still think you can just stick your head in the sand and wish for these ugly bad things to go away, well, I have bad news for you.

To me, this is a perfect recipe to relegate Codeberg to irrelevance. And we are already seeing the beginning of a new exodus.

Here is my conspiracy theory: the vote was pushed or manipulated from the inside by Big Tech. Whether this is true or not, one thing is sure: folks at Microsoft, GitHub, OpenAI etc. are now popping champagne.

Ganz #neuhier bin ich nicht. Meine ersten Schritte unternahm ich vor langer Zeit bei Diaspora. Im letzten Jahr gab es einen kurzen Abstecher nach Friendica und seit März 2026 bin ich mit Sharkey auf procial.tchncs.de unterwegs. Seit ein paar Tagen habe ich einen eigenen Hub auf Uberspace installiert und in Betrieb genommen. Langsam aber sicher kann ich dem Konzept und der Komplexität von Hubzilla folgen. Es ist eben nicht nur ein Account im Fediverse, sondern ein federiertes CMS. Zugegeben, ich habe eine natürliche Abneigung gegen eierlegende Wollmilchsäue, aber hier mache ich gerne eine Ausnahme. Meine technischen Interessen liegen bei Linux, FreeBSD, GhostBSD und dem Fediverse. Ich verbringe viel Zeit im Garten und in der Natur. Das alles als linksgrünversiffter, antifaschistischer Demokrat.

I think the most important question is: why does anyone comply with what one incurious, self-centered, and self-important man, Linus Torvalds, says?

Why is that most important? Because Linux does not belong to Linus Torvalds. It belongs to the world. Torvalds only gets to dictate if the people who are best-positioned to take that power from him fail to do so. From where I sit (as an outsider), he should have been removed from the project, or at least have his dictatorial power removed, long ago, and the primary problem is that there is no structure or will to actually do that.

Under these conditions Linux is a hierarchical, and therefore right-wing, project. The project allows a single man to dictate the future evolution of a global good. Let's drop the illusion that it is "free" or "open" till that changes.

I am a regular Codeberg user, left GitHub in 2019, and co-maintain Libre projects that saw very little if none at all AI in development.

And still I think this decision will backfire badly.

I, like most of Codeberg users, was not even aware that this discussion was in place, did not vote. This only passed because of the anti-AI Luddite crowd. Which, mind you, has a point, I have very conflicting feelings about AI myself, and I think that the current trajectory is quite worrying. But this is just a knee-jerk reaction that has clearly not been thought of well enough.

I applaude the philosophy, or the intent if you want, of not having Codeberg turn into another SlopHub. But this is fairy-tale wishful thinking. There is no way to reliably detect AI-generated code at scale in 2026.
I can already smell the mutual witch hunts across projects and "camps".

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

Kubernetes is really neat tech, and I know I spent a few days learning how to use it and stuff, but I really don't see a need for it in my homelab. I might just bring my k3s down and convert them to docker-compose.

This isn't anti-K8s, or something extreme, it's more like pro-right-tool-for-the-job. For a single-VM setup running a handful of services, Compose reduces maintenance overhead without sacrificing anything I actually need.

Just an idea for UK/EU digital legislation.

All non-FOSS, proprietary mobile apps must have a web alternative. This will allow people to use services without relying on Apple/Google services and telemetry via a phone web browser of their choice (rather than having to download the app).

Yes - there'll be plenty of cases where this can't happen, but I think it's a good starting point.

They're likely doing this through using the strictest device attestation settings in Google's Play Integrity API.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but #Linux is political. You personally might not be into it for the politics, which is fine I guess, but anything that pushes back against America's global tech monopoly is a political project. It can't not be.

In my replacement of apps on both my computer and phone with #FOSS apps, I'm content with every alternative, even after a while for some. Some are even way better than the proprietary ones.

However, for my phone, I miss how snappy and smart Gboard is (my phone keyboard). I have #Heliboard, it is nice and all. But I'm a heavy texter, Gboard makes me text seamlessly.though I understand it's this good because of the immense amount of users data they collect without consent. So, I guess, I'll stick to the principle, and use Heliboard.

The good thing about #foss project doing their coming out about #llm is that it frees us to donate to them and redirect that money to people who care about their craft and spillover effects of using such tech - especially in their current state.

I'm itching to start using a new #distro. As a recent #Linux user '#Mint' since a few months ago, I started to feel the urge to try a new distro with a new #DE. I have in mind to try #Debian with #Gnome.

My search said Debian is community-driven, their #governance is #decentralised, #democratic, and more aligned with #FOSS values than other distros out there.

If I want the same values, I should choose #KDEPLASMA. But, I really don't want to currently. I'm finding myself curious about Gnome ATM. I'm in despair if my combination is fit. 😅

Today I learned that there are some proprietary components in #Linux #distros. I learned the deep stuff like firmware is no escape. But there are some distros who will include #proprietary stuff for workflow.

I checked my #Mint and there was nothing, or at least the check told me, I'm as #FOSS as if I'd be on #Debian. This made me relax a bit.

But also learned that Debian gives a priority to Foss stuff more than any distro out there. That's a nice thing to know.

and most if not all #foss software will either get contributions from people you don't like, money from places you don't like, sponsors from companies you don't like, or will go in a direction you don't agree with. I guess we can't win

I've been running Linux since 1993 and to this day, I'm still learning. It's what I love so much about running Linux and FOSS. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be stuck running only a proprietary OS or apps.

I've also been running FreeBSD on and off for years, but that's about to change to running FreeBSD daily. Not replacing Linux, but running it along with Linux.

Sorry, just a simple appreciation post for FOSS, all the projects, and most importantly, all of the folks who devote their time to developing this wonderful software.

I don't know what will be my journey with #Linux #distros in the future. As a new comer, I'm using #Linuxmint. I'm obsessed with #FOSS and Linux now. I feel I'll be exploring new distros for the sake of learning, learning about computers, and how things work, it is rich.

But eventually, I feel I'd settle on something that works, as I need to be productive and take care of my work/job. So eventually, I see myself going back to Mint or even something similar. Going back to a distro that'll stay out of my way, let me focus on my work, something reliable and stable.
