I spent the last couple of weeks finally finishing a project I started for Bletchley Park about 20 years ago. Recreating the original MUD and MIST on a mirror of the original Essex University system that finally closed in 1991.
Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle wrote the first online multi-user game (MUD) on Essex University's DECSystem-10 in 1978 and it ran till I closed it in 1991. I diligently backed everything up so I could potentially recover it one day, but as far as I can see, all the DECSystem-10's went to the great scrapyard in the sky, my backups were mostly stolen when my first museum was stolen, and I had huge issues recovering the Essex BCPL compiler to compile what I had left when I finally got a decent TOPS-10 emulator running on a VAX for Bletchley Park.
One good thing about being an unemployable whistleblower is free time, so I finally hunkered down to some 90 hour weeks and built a software replica of the Essex system I think reflects it well. It's running on a KS10 not a KL10 but I had to let some things slip.
I put the latest known versions of MUD and MIST on it, and miraculously found ROCK too.
So, to meander to the point, if you want to see and relive exactly what online multi user gaming was like from 1978 to 1991, you can go to https://dec10.uknet.net and login as guest, then follow the terse instructions from there.
In those days, you were generally faced with a "." prompt and left mostly alone, so for authenticity, I will leave it at that.
I should note that this is a museum peice, without a community they are still wildly popular games with a huge community in snapshot-form at the moment. But I will leave them up and running to see. I wasn't going to, but Richard seemed happy to have MUD running, and former MIST players wanted it back, so...

Per contrast, #Valve (which is owned predominantly by #GabeN and only has marginal amounts of (non-traded!) stocks with it's employees) is also doing great without #enshittifiying #Steam.
- Mostly because #Steam can't afford to mistreat it's customers longterm, as being convenient for said users is what sets them apart from any other store...

Anyone remember Unknown Orbit?
I reviewed thousands of iOS games on TouchArcade way back when, and one of my favorites of all time was Exbleative's Unknown Orbit, which was basically Tiny Wings .. in 3D .. in space. It was awesome.
Last night the Steam store put a game called Exo One in front of me. In the preview, it looked something like Tiny Wings .. in 3D .. in space. It's 70% off in the Steam store for a few days (currently $5), so I gave it a go.
"A strange signal... an alien craft... an interplanetary, gravity-defying journey through space and time."
Long story short, it's from Exbleative and appears to be a massive evolution of Unknown Orbit (for PC and Xbox), set on strange, eerie worlds and with a mysterious storyline to unravel.
Having been such a fan of the earlier iOS title, I am thrilled to have found this and am having a great time exploring this universe.

The Ghouls 'n' Ghosts 'n' Goblins range of Capcom platformers are among my all-time favorite games.
Love the spooky atmosphere, the gorgeous graphics, the soundtracks and the variation in the levels.
The games are very tough to complete. I owned Ghouls 'n' Ghosts for the Sega Megadrive, and painfully discovered that you needed to complete the entire game twice to reach the ultimate end boss: the Devil himself. 😓

I have a few questions about the game #GrimDawn and was curious if this isn't easy for people more "in the know" than I.
I like the idea of dashing, double-wielding...and I like the concept of the raven. Can I play through the game just dashing around with my bird?
Is there anything in specific I should worry about? Perhaps a website beyond Grimtools for advice?

Hi, I'm making an offline shareware daily games app. What are some games I could include in it? I want a small set of games that are compelling to play frequently (possibly daily if you really like them), and easy for a computer to generate.
I already know I'm doing Wordle, but I'd prefer not to do games that require me to expand the dictionary beyond that because that would increase the file size and load time a lot.
Details of the Concept: There's new puzzles/levels in the games each day, which are the same for everyone in the world. They're generated locally based on the system date. It's a basic TUI app because that's easy to program and to set up, and it's written in Python because thats very well supported on all major PC operating systems.
