As I had to buy a new device quite recently, a Sigma Mobile X-Treme PQ-67 phone, I now wondering, is there a way to install something other than "Soon to be Locked Down" Android there?
Not that I use any open-source shops like , but what I expect with that is that apps like EZ Meditation Timer or K9 Mail, together with many free apps simply would become unmaintained and collapse as projects.

I can only give the following advice since I don't have your device
- Check ALL sources which have reputable Open Source android replacement OS
- When you've found one that supports your brand of android, verify twice that your model is also supported, including it's submodel number
- make a backup if the device has important unsynced data
- expect a PITA of a detailed install procedure
- check all error messages and do what is written to the LETTER
- failing to do the above will result in a bricked device which may have cost you a couple to many of months of cash gathering!
- learn to work with the alternatives programs, just like Huawei users have learned to work with the flourishing Huawei OS which is FREE of GOOGLE tracking
- be patient
- be patient

- next time buy a Huawei phone with Harmony(?) OS free of googleor
- go the PITA route of finding a supported high to good performance android which is new in model for the open source OS you want.
- go the easy route and get a low performing android with OLD chipset and Linux distro for android pre installed

He is throwing a Karen-level temper tantrum, and is threatening to end the $200 million contract with Anthropic, AND designating the company a “supply chain risk”—a penalty usually reserved for foreign adversaries. That would require any company doing business with the military to also certify that they don’t use Anthropic tools in their own workflows.
The Pentagon is reportedly hoping that its negotiations with Anthropic will force #OpenAI, #Google, and #xAI to also agree to the “all lawful use” standard.”

If I know someone here who works at #Google or can tell me a working way to report phishing mails sent via Google services, please send me a DM with how to send full headers and content of such phishing mails to Google so they can take appropriate action. It seems the phishers have found a reliable way to send these mails without Google noticing and the numbers are rising steadily. Please no replies of how Google is bad etc. I just want to get this solved.

"Google has criticized the European Union’s intentions to achieve digital sovereignty through open-source software." Umm...ok...I think I can see why they did that, but lets read further... "The company [Google] warned that Brussels’ policies aimed at reducing dependence on American tech companies could harm competitiveness. " Yeah. For Google itself it can definitely "harm [their] competetiveness". "According to Google, the idea of replacing current tools with open-source programs would not contribute to economic growth." Correct again, if you ARE Google. If everyone start using open-source alternatives it will most likely not contribute to Googles economic growth. It quite likely will contribute to economic growth for a bunch of smaller/new companies. It will also open the playing field for software development which still being possible for anyone to verify/test/check/view the source code to ensure there are no flaws in there, or algorithms for tracking people based on advertising goals. They are kind of correct too in that it will probably cause a Given that Google has removed the "Don't be evil" from their Mission Statement, for unknown reason, I think it is wise, for many different reasons, to cut down on the dependence on Google (and Microsoft, Facebook etc), and to look at alternatives. Ideally open-source ones that can be scrutinized by anyone who wishes to do so.

The Department of Homeland Security (#DHS) is expanding its efforts to identify Americans who oppose #ICE by sending tech companies legal requests for the names, email addresses, telephone numbers and other identifying data behind social media accounts that track or criticize the agency.
In recent months, #Google, #Reddit, #Discord and #Meta, which owns #Facebook and #Instagram, have received hundreds of administrative subpoenas from the DHS, according to four government officials and tech employees privy to the requests.

Excerpt: "Amandla Thomas-Johnson had attended a protest targeting companies that supplied weapons to Israel at a #CornellUniversity job fair in 2024 for all of five minutes, but the action got him banned from campus. When President Donald Trump assumed office and issued a series of executive orders targeting students who protested in support of #Palestinians, Thomas-Johnson and his friend Momodou Taal went into hiding.
"Google informed Thomas-Johnson via a brief email in April that it had already shared his metadata with the Department of Homeland Security, as The Intercept previously reported. But the full extent of the information the agency sought — including usernames, addresses, itemized list of services, including any IP masking services, telephone or instrument numbers, subscriber numbers or identities, and credit card and bank account numbers — was not previously known.
" 'I’d already seen the subpoena request that Google and Meta had sent to Momodou [Taal], and I knew that he had gotten in touch with a lawyer and the lawyer successfully challenged that,' Thomas-Johnson said. 'I was quite surprised to see that I didn’t have that opportunity.'
"The subpoena provides no justification for why ICE is asking for this information, except that it’s required 'in connection with an investigation or inquiry relating to the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.' In the subpoena, ICE requests that Google not 'disclose the existence of this summons for indefinite period of time.'
Thomas-Johnson, who is British, believes that ICE requested that information to track and eventually detain him — but he had already fled to Geneva, Switzerland, and is now in Dakar, Senegal.
"The #ElectronicFrontierFoundation, which is representing Thomas-Johnson, and the #ACLU of Northern California sent a letter to Google, #Amazon, #Apple, #Discord, #Meta, #Microsoft, and #Reddit last week calling on tech companies to resist similar subpoenas in the future from #DHS without court intervention. The letter asks the companies to provide users with as much notice as possible before complying with a subpoena to give them the opportunity to fight it, and to resist gag orders that would prevent the #TechCompanies from informing targets that a subpoena was issued.
" 'Your promises to protect the privacy of users are being tested right now. As part of the federal government’s unprecedented campaign to target critics of its conduct and policies, agencies like DHS have repeatedly demanded access to the identities and information of people on your services,' the letter reads.
" 'Based on our own contact with targeted users, we are deeply concerned your companies are failing to challenge unlawful surveillance and defend user privacy and speech.' "

Funny how someone can’t retrieve older footage from their #Nest doorbell camera because they don’t have a subscription for video storage, but when police asked for the footage, #Google was able to produce it.
In other words, Google appears to be storing camera footage even when users aren’t paying them to store it.
Hanlon’s Razor says this is probably incompetence or laziness rather than malice, but even incompetence can be used to build a #surveillance state.

Worth noting for #GoogleMaps users... It has been clear to me for some time that #Google is using machine learning algorithms (sometimes called "AI") to adjust boundaries of geographic features. I assume they run an #ML model over satellite photos to do this. Here's a example of it failing, badly. The first picture attached is a Google Map of an urban creek in my town, with a street just north of it. Note how Google shows the creek not going anywhere near the street. The second picture is a topographic map of the same area. Notice how the creek ACTUALLY goes much farther north than Google depicts. For creeks and bodies of water I've noticed this most often happens where there is an adjacent #FloodPlain that the creek spills into on occasion. Clearly Google's algorithm is noticing water during flood conditions, or breaks in the tree line, and "learning" that the creek has moved. (In their defense, it is quite unusual that this urban creek passes directly under an office building parking deck, which probably also played a part. I use #Google Messages for #texting. It's not bad but its only solid features are the #spam blocking and the fact I can use it in a web browser. Oh, and #RCS (as questionable as that may be).

ich möchte mich gern zunehmend von Google zurück ziehen, Stück für Stück. Ein Projekt soll dieses Jahr v.a. die Bilder/Foto Sammlung werden. Ich muss gestehen, dass es schon sehr komfortabel ist, dass ich die Bilder in der Cloud habe und von sämtlichen Endgeräten zugreifen kann, gleich wenn ich die Bilder gemacht habe.
