For the first time it is now possible for parents and guardians to monitor screen time and set limits for child accounts, including bedtime schedules.
ok. go fuck yourself. go to hell you abuse enabling pieces of shit who pushed for this
the foundations for web filtering support has also been added — a backend service that can enforce content filters for child accounts once the user interface is completed in future updates

GNOME 50 released
The GNOME team has released GNOME 50, the latest version of what is probably the most popular open source desktop environment. It brings fine-grained parental controls, and the groundwork for web filtering so that in future releases, parents and guardians can set content filters for children. Our own kids are still way too young to have access to computers and the internet, but I'm not sure I'll ever r

🚨 We are pleased to announce the release of #GNOME 50. You can read about what our contributors have been working on in
https://release.gnome.org//50/
We take the chance of this new release to thank our contributors who have made this happen!
Let us know what you think! ❤️
So apparently #GNOME 50 removes support for #X11 entirely, it's #Wayland-only.
Last time I checked there was still hardware people were using #Linux on daily that Wayland didn't work on.
Perhaps they've finally fixed all those issues and it works everywhere. I hope so, but I kinda doubt it.
This feels like GNOME's Windows 11 upgrade moment, and I don't mean that in a good way.
I see that #Microsoft #Windows 11 now sorts apps into categories like “productivity" and “creativity” by default.
How, though? By looking up a numeric category identifier in a 15MB JSON file that comes with Windows. Apps are not allowed to specify their own categories, nor can new categories be defined other than by Microsoft.
Good grief, what absolute nonsense.
#XDG / #FreeDesktop / #GNOME / #KDE had a vastly better solution to this exact problem 20 years ago.
Kind of neat how well #GNOME apps fit in on macOS :) Since @nila added support for macOS to #puregotk in https://codeberg.org/puregotk/puregotk/pulls/43 this week I thought I’d give it a shot on my new MacBook Neo - and it works really well. Cross-compilation from Linux to macOS was super easy thanks to purego, no cross-compiler needed, just `GOOS=darwin GOARCH=arm64`. Plus, discovered that macOS’s arm64 library paths are different!
Coming up in #GNOME 50 there is new #accessibility option — reduced motion! It allows to reduce animations across desktop and apps.
Thank you to many contributors who made this happen❤️

been a while since I used a Grid (probably GTK2 days). and being able to set relative positions to other items is a lot more intuitive and less clunky than hardcoding edge numbers.
also and texts are working nicely for scientific notations! 📊
adding ✨.
almost done with the low hanging fruit. now need to add graphs over time.
best way to do that?
boom. bar charts. 📊
just using a GtkFrame and styling with CSS.
the line graph will be trickier, but thinking about generating an SVG and displaying that.
TIL about GtkLevelBar.
GtkProgressBar's lost brother from an other mother.
just set the min/max and a value. convenient!
#libadwaita has a handy .accent CSS class for labels.
using that (+bold) to highlight when measurements are good or heading in the right direction.
settling on the layout. I think this will be it for the first release.
funky colours that match the wallpaper totally by accident... 😉
also added a #fediverse hashtag graph. arguably the best indicator!
ok, light theme! ☀️
cards use the same colour as windows. so I'm slightly changing the base window colour to the one used in sidebars (like in Files).
GTK doesn't seem to have a .dark or .light CSS selector. so had to manually toggle a class and listen for the dark mode signal. no big deal.
Look at how far the pointer has to travel to name a document, change the file format, then save or cancel. This is #LibreOffice 26.2.0.3 on #gnome 49.4. It was even worse before I discovered I could resize the "save as" dialog - before that, it took the entire height of the screen.

# CSD
Reading up on CSD, client side decorations
Client side decorations give a lot of headaches when they're not improperly implemented many of these mods should just stay with SSD, server side decorations
Quote
> GtkHeaderBar merges the title bar, menu bar and tool bar into one unified horizontal bar to give more space to the application content, potentially reducing the amount of wasted space by showing empty bars.

You're absolutely right there are worse things occuring.
But the following is a bad CSD
CSD In Firefox mobile
Instead of going on I'll just stick with what that still works I may need to go all the way back to that MX Linux distro which at least feels familiar and use as many clients that don't abuse CSDs
One more question; what example do you have of something that's worse than client-side decorations
IMHO the one I just referred too, is a very bad one
BTW to prove your point;
It took me 15 minutes to compose this lousy small message on the Android. It would have taken me 120 seconds on one of the desktops running here
All because of horrific user interfaces low free RAM and bad CSD choices on the Android

#Gnome and #KDE should be personality modules atop of the same fundamental UI/Graphics toolkit and subsystem, and I will die on this hill.
It's beyond stupid to re-implement the same basic functionality in two completely different ways, and for our "new and improved" graphics stack to just be a pixel-pusher that Qt and GTK talk to.
Also, Gnome fellas, it's only cool to be THAT ruddy smarmy and opinionated if your opinions don't suck. I would literally rather use an Amiga 500 with a cracked 13" CRT than deal with your ridiculous CSDs and useless scrollbars. Stop already.
Not sorry.

Technobabble: I wouldn't call this a "Linux" problem. For instance, the same Linux kernel is part of both GNU/Linux and Android, but the issue is broader: "everything is a file in a directory tree" is how Unix has worked since the 1970s, and all its descendants follow that model — including Apple's desktop and mobile systems. On phones (and dedicated cameras), camera apps save images to well‑known directories and gallery apps read and index those folders. The same method works on any #FreeDesktop environment: keep your photos in ~/Pictures and use, e.g., Shotwell — it will automatically read the folder and show a gallery when you open it if you enable "watch library directory for new files." I hope this info helps your quest.
Happy #ilovefs day, everyone!

I've just installed Cairo Dock in my SBC Raspberry Pi5, using pi-packages the Add/Remove software utility.
What a mess I created.
Cairo Dock could not work properly. The gfx output indicated that it rendered in a manner that Wayland does not like. I then proceded with sudo apt install cairo-doc from bash, after removal in pi-packages.
All dependecies were easily installed, but the rendering of my beloved Cairo dock still failed, making it still unusuable, in Wayland on the Pi5 SBC with 8GiB RAM
I will investigate, but for now I can't get the gorgeous Cairo dock to easily work on Wayland on the SBC Raspberry Pi5

I've read your responses to my toot twice. Thank you 💕 for reacting.
IMHO your though process does not justify the hate you've got for localsend.
Your hate towards, the for you unknown program, localsend is **unfounded*"
Cherish the fact that there is choice and diversity in OpenSource programming.
Stable release versions for synchronizing files exist since the 1970s, not the 1990s. You've clearly not been around long enough to realize that fact **
Ever since plain simple sh existed, such programs were coded. One such program was coded more than fifty years ago and is still in active use.
Please be so kind to use wisdom and intelligence when you react and respond to toots. You acted like a typical snobbish Linux user. Reactions like yours don't contribute anything positive, no one learns from toots like the ones you posted in this thread.
I've never had such responses from the people in the BSD range of Operating Systems.
Even here on the FediVerse the diverse responses from Linux only users and programmers were not of such nature and low caliber.
I'm surprised, yet paradoxically expected your motivational chain.
** If you have been around long enough, to know open source code from the 1970s, look in the mirror and ask yourself why you have reacted in such a manner .
I will still wish you a good day / night, wherever you may reside.

I should note that you can not make the mistake of comparing KDEconnect extended capabilities with those of localsend.
They operate on totally different realms.
KDEconnect has a set of plugins which work like functional libraries. There so many that I will have to include a screenshot, just to give you a sample of what KDEconnect can actually do.
Local follows The Unix Principle; it does One thing in a does it very well.
In case you've gotten curious; you can install KDEconnect with its accompanying libraries on another working environment apart from KDE. You do not need to run a full KDE Desktop Environment.
Over here I run KDEconnect on machines which have Xfce4 running, while it's counterpart runs on a couple of Androids.
KDEconnect also runs on Ancient Android Operating Systems
The programming team of KDE does not care where you run it's wonderful software as long as you can enjoy it.
The same goes for The GNOME programming team. I run Cairo Dock and GPartED also on Xfce4. In fact I run many Gnome libraries in Xfce4 to have crucial functionality in many parts of the Xfce4 Desktop Environment. Without those wonderful libraries I would run a crippled version of Xfce4.
I will include screenshots from a desktop computer where I will show you that I run both GNOME software and KDE software in Xfce4 DE

@qwertz interop is great. Other factors are great.
The 'What’s changing?' section of Adrian Vovk's June 2025 blog post also touched upon why change was appropriate. This was eyebrow-raising:
"… code was initially implemented for GNOME 2.24, and is starting to show its age. It has received very minimal attention in the 17 years since it was first written. …"
<https://fosstodon.org/@AdrianVovk/114661507151392865> @AdrianVovk

@qwertz I'll make this point:
― if a person likes GNOME without systemd, then the person does not really like GNOME.
Need to be realistic about the paths chosen by developers; about consensus.
When Apple took paths that I could not tolerate, I stopped using Mac OS X. And so on.
