buc.ci is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Has anyone thought through the ramifications of SCION adoption (a more secure BGP alternative) with respect to Open Internet Access?
Yes, it gives much better, more performant, more robust routing. It seems imposing strong trust controls, regionally (or nationally) managed, on routing would be a big security improvement.
But doesn't it give the nation state an iron hand in who is allowed to route? Does it create risks for the open internet?

The IP protocol stacks used on Earth's Internet are typically configured based on assumptions of short delays and mostly uninterrupted communications. The Internet revolts after a dishonorable "judge" tries to erase taxpayer-funded audit trail from the Internet.
"What that" you ask?
DOGE bro deposition videos. These are hours and hours of videos in which two members of DOGE described how they used ChatGPT to help cut hundreds of millions of dollars of grants; were unable or unwilling to define DEI, etc.
👉🏾 be sure to use lower case letter "j" and quotation marks to emphasize the "dishonorable" part, that this "judge" deserves NO honorifics. This is AUDIT trail that needs to be everywhere.
One of the few government employees left after DOGE gutted the people with ethics.... that judge wanted the blabbering idiot's blabbering to be "removed" from YouTube.

Unexpected side effect of turning off my YouTube history: better choices.
A couple of weeks ago I decided to delete my YouTube history and disable it. Now, every time I open YouTube I’m greeted with a “nag” to enable the history. YouTube says it’ll be so much better! We promise!
But the opposite turned out to be the case. I’ve been scrolling through the main screen, finding new and interesting stuff. Before, I was seeing the same old things, over and over again, from the same channels.
The lesson is that if a web site’s algorithm is too tightly focused, you won’t see anything that doesn’t pass through a filter “custom designed” for you. You find yourself in an echo chamber without ever intending to be placed there.
It’s supposed to help you, but what it really does is isolate you.

I got my first modem in the summer of 1986, a Prometheus ProModem 1200A (modem on a card) for the Apple II. The first BBS I logged in to was OxGate, an RBBS/RCPM system the phone number of which I still can remember (my earliest BBS software -- firmware-based on that modem card -- had no phone book). I used BBSs avidly until sometime in 1994, when I subscribed to a local ISP's (Widomaker of Williamsburg, VA) dial-up modem-based PPP service that brought TCP/IP to my 486 PC with Windows 3.1. I could then browse the web from home, and that was basically the end of BBSing for me -- for the moment, anyway.
For those interested in experiencing this early form of online community, there are many BBSs online right now, accessible via telnet on systems old and new. I've enjoyed getting back into BBSing this way, especially when using vintage systems to login.

I love DNS esoterica. Weird little things that you can shove in the global directory to be distributed around the world instantly(ish).
Domain names, like www.example.com usually resolve to servers. As much as we think of "the cloud" as being some intangible morass of ethereal Turing-machines floating in probability space, the more prosaic reality is that they're just boxen in data centres. They have a physical location.
Got a tricky machine which is playing silly-buggers? Wouldn't it be nice to know exactly where it is? That way you can visit and give it some percussive maintenance.
Enter the DNS LOC record!
The snappily titled RFC 1876 is an experimental standard. It allows you to create a DNS record which specifies the latitude and longitude of your server. Of course, some data-centres are very tall and some are underground. So it also contains an altitude parameter.
The standard allows for a minimum altitude of -100,000 metres - deep enough for any bunker! The maximum altitude is 42,849,672 metres which is high enough to allow it to be used on satellites in geostationary orbit.
So, as a bit of fun, I decided to create where-is-the-iss.dedyn.io
It isn't a website. You can't ping it. There's no way to interact with it except by using DNS. Yup! You can use a DNS query to get the (approximate) location of the International Space Station!
Linux and Mac users
can run:
dig where-is-the-iss.dedyn.io LOC
And receive back the latest position of the ISS:
;; ANSWER SECTION:
where-is-the-iss.dedyn.io. 1066 IN LOC 47 24 53.500 N 66 12 12.070 W 430520m 10000m 10000m 10000m
The DNS records are updated every 15 minutes on a best-effort basis
.
The lovely people at N2YO have a website which allows you to track loads of objects in orbit. They also have an easy to use API with a generous free tier.
Calling https://api.n2yo.com/rest/v1/satellite/positions/25544/0/0/0/1/&apiKey=_____ gets back the latest position:
JSON
{ "info": { "satname": "SPACE STATION", "satid": 25544, "transactionscount": 7 }, "positions": [ { "satlatitude": -21.25409321, "satlongitude": 140.3335763, "sataltitude": 420.09, "azimuth": 292.92, "elevation": -70.95, "ra": 202.69300845, "dec": -32.16097472, "timestamp": 1751366048, "eclipsed": true } ]}
Note that the altitude is in Km, whereas the LOC format requires m.
The latitude and longitude are in decimal format - they need to be converted to Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds.
There were only a few free domain name providers who offer an API for updating LOC records. I went for deSEC a charity from Berlin. They have comprehensive API documentation.
Adding the initial LOC record is done with:

curl https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/where-is-the-iss.dedyn.io/rrsets/ \ --header "Authorization: Token _______" \ --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<< \ '{"type": "LOC", "records": ["40 16 25.712 S 29 32 36.243 W 427550m 0.00m 10000m 10m"], "ttl": 900}'
However, updating the record is a little trickier. it needs to be sent as an HTTP PATCH to a subtly different URl. The PATCH only needs to send the data which have changed.
Bash
curl -X PATCH https://desec.io/api/v1/domains/where-is-the-iss.dedyn.io/rrsets/@/LOC/ \ --header "Authorization: Token _______" \ --header "Content-Type: application/json" --data @- <<< \ '{"records": ["40 16 25.712 S 29 32 36.243 W 427550m 0.00m 10000m 10m"]}'
I set the Time To Live at 900 seconds. Every 15 minutes my code runs to update the record
. That keeps me well within the API limits for both services. I could add TXT records showing when it was last updated, or other sorts of unstructured data, but I think this is enough for a quick proof-of-concept.
There you have it! A complex and silly way to demonstrate how DNS can be used to hold the most unlikely of records
. Say, I wonder how you'd represent the co-ordinates of the Mars Rover…?
For more DNS weirdness, please see my other posts:
I don't think there's a way for Windows users to look up LOC records using PowerShell or the Command Prompt. ↩︎
Look, I'm not NASA, OK? If you're using this to help you dock then I cannot be held responsible. ↩︎
I suppose you could build an API with unlimited request limits by distributing data via DNS TXT records. Would best suit static or infrequently updating data. Push it once to DNS and let everyone query it semi-locally. ↩︎
See if you can find the other interesting record I've added to DNS! ↩︎
@dianea the #commercialization of the #Internet as the biggest mistake ever…
#LateStageCapitalism is just enshittifying things, as sociopathic assholes are allowed to exist & rule!
I am writing a post on rise of software that help bring back sanity to the web. Please help me expand the list 😎✨

You may have heard that #mozilla introduced an #AI kill switch into #Firefox.
If you would rather use a browser that is less interested in #LLM technologies, @Waterfox has been your companion for over a decade.
I had a chance to ask the founder and developer some questions about Waterfox's history, operations, and their take on AI.
Enjoy and and share!
So now we've got people calling folks with positive comments about #StarfleetAcademy "bots".
Our rapid descent into the "if I don't like/agree with it, it's AI or bots" era seriously fucking blows.
Not just because it's a shitty knee-jerk accusation but it's a difficult one to definitively deny because it IS technically possible and it does happen...
But it also caused a lot of winter anxiety. #grickledoodle #scrolling #hibernation #internet #cartoon #bears #art #drawing #funny

I remember when the #Internet first became widely available and all of a sudden we had all these #research sources at our fingertips that we no longer had to go to the closest university library to access.
Now with #AI it's <<I Want an answer now and I don't care where it comes from or how accurate it is I just want it now with no work on my part.>>
If you'd like to find songs or artists similar to the ones you like, but don't want to depend on Spotify for that, here's an alternative:

Google's AI is bleeding through the web like a blot of ink on a piece of paper. It's using summaries to manipulate traffic and divert it to its own domains. This may sound innocuous for individual consumers, but it's bad for online businesses.
The mere slap on the wrist Google received for its antitrust practices have empowered it. Google now fancies itself "unstoppable," and it will destroy the web if it isn't stopped. It would be fine were the AI parasites to build a whole new web exclusively for their thieving agents, but that's not what's happening. Instead, they are cannibalizing the human web.

Something else I was thinking about when reading this article: the #Quatsino nation could use the $18k saved by this to become an #ISP.
#Indigenous #DigitalSovereignty … I honestly cannot say I have **ever** heard of this, though I suspect some nation, some where, has done it. Yes, there are ongoing costs, risks. And there is a big up-front cost if they want to run fibre to the community.
But likely less than **not** doing it.
Every person joining the fediverse is a digital hero.
You may think it's a small thing. Yes, it's small thing but also a big step to make Internet better and people-first.
Made by the people for the people.
Oh, and also made for cats, dogs, capybaras and other puppies.
So, enjoy, encourage friends to join and let's make it a nice, inclusive and cozy space for everyone.

I took over a sub that was frankly super toxic. Over the years, I realised that for a community to have healthy conversations you have to enforce it, and you have to model good discussions. It's hard work.
I've actually done most of what Anil recommends in this post. Most excellent read.
"Fix your communities. Stop allowing and excusing destructive and pointless conversations to be the fuel for your business. "
https://www.anildash.com/2011/07/20/if-your-websites-full-of-assholes-its-your-fault-2/
"Videos are the start. They show what happened but not why. We still need context, analysis, and investigation to understand the whole story. And that is the last thing Trump and his enforcers want. They know people will recognize: a) that they lied about what happened, b) what happened was illegal, and c) those responsible will likely not be held accountable."
"The internet and social media are often maligned for spreading disinformation, negatively impacting mental health, and perpetuating screen addiction and cyberbullying. Amid all the issues with pervasive distraction, in the time of Trump, the technology that lives in our pockets has become one of the most useful tools to combat the administration’s stranglehold on the 'truth.'”
~ Dan Rather
"Illinois Governor JB Pritzker instructed everyone to 'video everything.' Fellow governor Tim Walz of Minnesota echoed this advice.
'Carry your phone with you at all times. And if you see ICE in your neighborhood, take out that phone and hit record. Help us create a database of the atrocities against Minnesotans — not just to establish a record for posterity, but to bank evidence for future prosecution,' he said last week."
Use Snowflake to give censorship the slip in places where Internet is blocked.
Snowflake allows you to connect to the Tor network in places where Tor is blocked by routing your connection through volunteer proxies located in uncensored countries.
Similar to VPNs, which help users bypass Internet censorship, Snowflake disguises your Internet activity as though you’re making a video or voice call, making you less detectable to Internet censors.
