As the war between the United States and Iran escalates again, Jordan has increasingly become the focus of renewed violence.
An Iranian attack that killed two US personnel in Jordan on Friday was the fourth in five days, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
On Monday, Iran claimed its ballistic missiles hit US military aircraft at the airport in the Jordanian port of Aqaba.
In recent months, the Pentagon has “shifted a number of troops from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to relatively more secure locations in Jordan and Israel,” according to the Times.
Yet despite the growing US-Israeli reliance on Jordan, Israel has slashed the amount of water it allowed to flow to Jordan and may be using the issue to pressure its neighbor into even greater political subservience – a dangerous game given that the Jordanian population remains deeply hostile to Israel."

Under their 1994 peace treaty, Israel must transfer 20 million cubic meters of Jordan River water to Jordan each summer and supply another 10 million cubic meters annually, while respecting Jordan’s rights to most of the Yarmouk River’s remaining flow.
Israel must also cooperate with Jordan to secure an additional 50 million cubic meters of drinking water each year.
The two countries signed the treaty – also known as the Wadi Araba agreement – normalizing relations despite there being no restoration of Palestinian rights or an end to Israeli military occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
Jordan has been described as the second most water scarce country globally.
In 2021, Israel agreed to provide Jordan with an additional 50 million cubic meters annually under a separate three-year agreement, according to Israeli publication Ynet.

Renewals stopped
Eli Cohen, Israel’s energy and infrastructure minister, has been renewing the agreement every six months.
“Israeli officials said the extensions came partly in response to US pressure and Jordan’s assistance in intercepting Iranian drones during recent regional hostilities,” according to Ynet.
But this stopped in November 2025, leaving water-stressed Jordan with only the original 50 million cubic meters it is entitled to under the Wadi Araba agreement.
“There is currently no expectation of a signing” of a new deal, Israeli state broadcaster Kan reported earlier this month, citing unnamed sources.
“This has sparked outrage in Jordan, which, according to sources, may respond,” Kan added.

Also under consideration would be the revival of a deal that Jordan backed out of in November 2023, which would have seen it provide Israel with solar-generated electricity in exchange for desalinated water.
Jordan and Israel had signed a memorandum of understanding on the deal along with the UAE in 2021.
At the time, thousands protested the deal in Amman and Jordanian security forces beat and arrested demonstrators.

Jordanian activists and commentators have long-warned that growing water or energy dependence on Israel could end up providing Israel with leverage to achieve other ends.
A persistent fear among Jordanian leaders – that the 1994 treaty has not managed to allay – is that Israel will act on longstanding Zionist ambitions of turning Jordan into an “alternative homeland” for the Palestinians, upending the country’s current political order.
US President Donald Trump revived those fears upon returning to office last year, when he called for the ethnic cleansing of the entire Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip to Jordan and Egypt.

This post makes me think : my parents told me that after WW-II when the Netherlands was liberated the soldiers from the so-called The Allies brought cigarettes and chocolate as presents. That appeared to be harmless, (though some people claim it wasn't) but Europe eventually became tainted with USA junk food from the likes of McDonalds and Burger King. The USA as some sort of golden cow we all had to obey. The same for Bayer-Monsanto's Roundup pesticide. The same for soldiers and nuclear weapons. The Dutch government has not wanted to confirm nor deny for decades that there were nuclear weapons from the USA stored in the Netherlands. Today in Labor History July 18, 1982: Over 250 Achi Maya (mostly women and children) were murdered by the Guatemalan armed forces and paramilitaries in the Plan de Sánchez massacre. They separated the girls, who were 15 to 20 years old, and raped them. Then they broke their arms and legs and killed them. Children were smashed against the floor and then thrown into the flames with their parents. Many of the weapons used by the Guatemalan military had been supplied by Israel, particularly after the U.S. Congress banned military aid to the country because of its atrocious human rights record. One relative of the victims said, "in church they tell us that divine justice is on the side of the poor; but the fact of the matter is, it is the military who get the Israeli guns."
The massacre was part of the scorched earth policies of dictator Rios Mont. Despite his history of genocidal war crimes, Rios Mont was repeatedly elected to Congress in the 1990s and early 2000’s. In 2013, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison for genocide and crimes against humanity, but his sentence was overruled by the Constitutional Court and he never served time.

The third time Anna Liedtke was subjected to an illegal strip-search in Israeli detention, female prison guards forced her on to her knees, covered her mouth to stop her screaming and raped her, according to interviews and a criminal complaint filed in Israel.
She described hearing male guards laughing during the attack, which she believes they watched and may have filmed. It took place in an area separated from the prison hallway by a partially drawn curtain that her attackers had left open.
Liedtke, 25, joined a flotilla sailing from Europe to Gaza with humanitarian aid last autumn. Israeli forces intercepted her boat in international waters on 8 October and took her to Israel, where she was detained for five days.
The abuse and violence directed at flotilla participants in Israeli prisons, including rape, was intended to intimidate, Liedtke said. “It’s clear they want to break our will and silence us, making this so traumatic that we will never talk about Palestine again,” she told the Guardian.

Instead, she told friends and doctors within days. In December she became the first flotilla activist to talk publicly about rape in Israeli detention. More than a dozen others have reported sexual assault, most anonymously.
Now lawyers acting for Liedtke in Israel have filed a complaint demanding authorities investigate her allegations. Israeli law defines rape as all non-consensual penetration.
“There is no reason for me to be ashamed,” Liedtke said, in her first interview about the legal case. “Whenever we are silent, they will do it to another person.”
The complaint, sent to the Israeli attorney general, the Israel Prison Service’s legal adviser, the Department for the Investigation of Prison Guards (Yahas), and the commander of Givon prison, was a challenge to a “culture of impunity” for abuse of prisoners in Israel, said Liedtke’s lawyer, Muna Haddad.
“It is Anna’s wish to seek justice and exhaust all avenues to hold the perpetrators of these acts accountable. We also want to raise awareness and see how the Israeli system responds when faced with our demand to open an investigation,” said Haddad, a lawyer with Adalah, a Palestinian human rights organisation in Israel.

At the end of, and after, the second world war, there was severe famine in the Netherlands. Because the Dutch keep good records, the long term health consequences of that famine on the children who lived through it were studied, and they were bad.
