If, like me, you've been actively seeking a job recently, you will likely be aware of the impact Ai has had on the job market. Virtually every other day is a msm news story about qualified and/or experienced people making hundreds of applications without getting anywhere.
Personally, although I've had a few interviews that didn't quite land (one I didn't really have enough experience, the others were pulled or lost funding), I've now applied for over 300 jobs over the past year. At this stage I'm quite philosophical about it and recognise it's not a reflection of my value.
Along with all the other current crises, there is now a looming employment and skills crisis. This is being framed as a benefits culture led by overdiagnosis of neurodivergence. Which makes me so very very cross it's difficult to put into words. I know that's not true. You know that's not true. *They* know that's not true. It's just a convenient demographic to throw under the bus to detract from the catastrophic damage being wrought by this new gold rush.
Urgh.
I've started typing this out a few times recently and always deleted. It's not something I feel very comfortable talking about. But I am really struggling with this and I figure that if I am there might be others. And I believe in visibility and not suffering in silence - been there and it was awful.
I know things will change at some point. And I know I've spoken to some of you separately irl about this (and thank you so much for your support), but just wanted to fire a beam out across Fedi to anyone else in this shitty situation. My own understanding of the DSM grew from dealing with anti-trans activists who would try to use the DSM as a cudgel against actual #trans people.
This is perhaps why I find #ErectileDisorder to be such an interesting DSM category: I have never yet seen anyone campaigning against social inclusion of people who have ED, or denying them access to #school, higher #education, #jobs, #housing, or even #firearms ownership.
Indeed, #Rx for ED is openly marketed to the public at large, even here in Canada (*hums a few bars from the famous #GoodMorning, Good Morning! commercial).
Yet when anything terrible happens that may or does involve a trans person, it seems that the very fact of trans being within the DSM is accepted both as evidence of guilt but also the reason for the terrible thing in the first place. 🙄

If you haven't been following this stuff for long, it might surprise you to know that "adding" 130,000 jobs in a month is a net loss. A jobs report like this would have been taken as a sign of a very poor economy even 15 years ago. The reason is that around 180,000 young people reach legal employment age each month in the US (Contra the admin's confabulations, this is how many US citizens reach employment age, and is not about immigration slowing). Adding 180,000 jobs would be treading water. Adding 130,000 is effectively 50,000 new people without jobs, a net loss by the spirit of this metric. There's also the reality that many of these estimates have been revised down by the BLS after more data came in.
Saying hiring is "picking up" and is "stronger than expected" is effectively saying "it could have been worse! 🤷 ". It's wild to see this positive spin on a very poor report.
It's extraordinarily fishy that the reported unemployment rate is not moving much in spite of these persistent and mounting job losses. I know why this is so please don't @ me a splanation. My point is that it, again, does not reflect the spirit of what this metric is meant to capture. It is wholly perverse now and should not be reported at all, let alone taken as a meaningful indicator.
The US economic numbers, when you push aside all the B.S., are recession-level. There's no "momentum" in the "labor market". There are not "green shoots" or "signs". The economic situation is bad.

We work with usable security mostly, less technical stuff, more HCI-like (but we like to mingle, my boss is a fan of side channel attacks). Our group is more end-user centered, but not exclusively. We have an (and trust me on this, I'm a work/social psychologist by trade) exceptional work climate at our group, with lots of freedom to work on your projects, but with good support should you need it.
Who we seek:
All you need to have is either of the following:
1) Master's degree in Computer Science
OR
2) Any Masters degree with a strong affinity for CS and usable security, and the willingness to learn. If you are not from CS, it is not a problem (I'm a psychologist, for example
), but you might be required to attend some (up to 4) lectures and pass tests to register as a PhD student in CS.
We welcome applicants from other countries than Germany as well, but we have very limited resources to help with the admin aspects of moving to Germany, applying for visa, finding somewhere to live etc.
