The rapid sequence of events on Monday in the courtroom of Judge Zahid N. Quraishi was the latest indication of growing tensions between the #DOJ & the federal #judiciary in NJ. It came during the scheduled sentencing of a man who last year agreed to plead guilty to possession of child pornography.
The hearing did not go as prosecutors had planned. Judge Quraishi grew frustrated with the office’s head of appeals, Mark Coyne, who had not formally disclosed that he would appear, & fiercely interrogated a more junior prosecutor about whether the former interim #USattorney, #AlinaHabba, still had some role in operating the office.
Judge Quraishi eventually threw Coyne out.
The judge then ordered the 3 leaders of the NJ office, who last week were found to be occupying their positions unlawfully, to appear next month to testify about their office’s leadership structure. Attorney General #PamBondi appointed the unconventional three-person leadership team in December after #AlinaHabba was also found to be unlawfully appointed & was disqualified. The leaders are Philip Lamparello, Jordan Fox & Ari Fontecchio.
This is pretty pointless. She never answers a question straight.

One night in December while my brother and his wife was watching TV, a truck and a car collided on the road, the truck struck his car, which was parked in his driveway some distance from the road, and pushed it through corner of the garage
His homeowners insurance told him to take it up with the "at fault" drivers #insurance, although they sent someone out to do an emergency "plywood" repair to his garage which he got a $2500 bill for. Same for his auto insurance. The at-fault driver's insurance, Geico, told him to take it up with his insurance companies and they would deal with reimbursing the other insurance companies.
Meanwhile, my brother has severe property damage, his auto, that was parked, is totaled, he is paying out of pocket to rent a vehicle, both him and his wife are nervous wrecks, afraid to be outside where it happened and living on pins and needles it will happen again, etc.
Insult Kicker... Because my brother submitted a claim to his auto insurance, they already raised his rates almost $200 per year because of the "watching tv while parked in you driveway accident" he was involved in.

#EdMartin was removed from the top prosecutor job in DC after senators made clear he would not be confirmed to the role, but has remained at the #DOJ in several roles, including as pardon attorney.
“Mr. Martin knew or should have known that, as a government official, his conduct violated the First & Fifth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States,” Fox wrote.
Martin is being represented by a DOJ attorney, a source told CNN.
“Acting in his official capacity & speaking on behalf of the government, he used coercion to punish or suppress a disfavored viewpoint, the teaching & promotion of ‘DEI,’” Fox wrote in the complaint. “He demanded that Georgetown Law relinquish its free speech & religious rights in order to continue to obtain a benefit, employment opportunities for its students.”
Unlike unsolicited complaints, Fox’s formal disciplinary complaint kicks off professional conduct proceedings for #EdMartin in which he will need to respond & could be sanctioned or ultimately lose his law license.
Fox’s announcement on Tuesday marks the first major bar discipline proceeding against a high-profile admin official or attorney supporting Trump during his second term.

“The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited & deployed at a protest yesterday & has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb,” Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said in a post on X. “It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.”
Analysis of a second device recovered at the scene is ongoing. No injuries were reported.
An anti-Islam protest organized by #FarRight influencer & #Trump #pardoned #Jan6 #insurgent #JakeLang drew barely 20 participants, while a counter-protest called “Drive the Nazis Out of New York” peaked at about 125 people, Tisch said.
The 2 groups were separated into designated #protest areas by NYPD officers, but tensions escalated shortly before noon. At around 12:15PM, a protester associated with Lang’s group used pepper spray against counterprotesters, Tisch said.
About 20 minutes later, an 18-year-old alleged counterprotester “lit & threw an ignited device toward the protest area,” which landed on a crosswalk, Tisch said.
“Witnesses reported seeing flames & smoke as it traveled through the air before it struck a barrier & extinguished itself a few feet from police officers,” she added.
…In total, 6 people were arrested: the 2 responsible for the devices, the person who deployed pepper spray & 3 others for disorderly conduct & obstructing traffic, Tisch said.
#Mamdani on Sunday called the Lang-organized protest “rooted in bigotry & racism,” saying, “Such hate has no place in New York City.” But he said what followed was “even more disturbing.”
“Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device & hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible & the antithesis of who we are,” the mayor said.
The mayor & his wife are safe, & #Mamdani has been in contact with Tisch, said press secretary Joe Calvello.
The mayor thanked the men & women of the NYPD for their bravery & quick action.

The device was thrown on Saturday outside the official residence of New York’s mayor, as a right-wing rally unfolded near #GracieMansion. The rally was led by #JakeLang, a #FarRight social media personality, who has led protests in Minneapolis, & now New York. His event on Saturday was billed as a “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” demonstration near Gracie, the Upper East Side home of #Mamdani, the city’s first #Muslim mayor.
#JakeLang showed up with a goat & about 20 followers, who were wearing American flag hats & “Freedom” sweatshirts [#racist clowns]. As the day wore on, tensions grew with about 100 counterprotesters.
Then toward the end of the event, a man appeared to light a small black object & tossed it on a sidewalk. Police rushed to arrest him & another man, as the device emitted smoke. It did not explode.

His car moved forward very slowly in the moments before Homeland Security Investigations [#HSI] Agent Jack C. Stevens fired 3 shots into Martinez’s blue Ford sedan. The footage does not show Martinez speeding up rapidly or appearing to target a second HSI agent, Hector Sosa.
Martinez was under the influence of alcohol & had marijuana in his system [IRRELEVANT], acc/to autopsy records, as different officers allowed him to keep going & shouted at him to stop.
Sosa told investigators that Martinez’s car struck his legs, causing him to fall over the hood before Stevens opened fire. It is not clear from the nighttime footage whether the exceptionally slow-moving car actually hit Sosa. Footage from a nearby business shows the hood of the Ford. But the video is grainy & skips through some portions & does not definitively show whether there is a figure on top of the hood.

Geoffrey P. Alpert, a professor of criminology & criminal justice at the University of South Carolina, said the chaotic scene, & its handling by law enforcement, raises “a lot of red flags.”
“The contradictory orders are confusing & may have been a strong influence,” Alpert said. “The speed is slow & doesn’t appear threatening. Could the officer have moved away? At worst, all he has to do is step aside. We call it officer-created jeopardy.”
The body-camera & surveillance footage was released along with witness statements & other material after a grand jury in #Texas declined to indict Stevens in connection with Martinez’s death.
