Successfully migrated the login to my Forgejo Git-Forge from an outdated installation of Authentik to a containerized Keycloak 26 with Passkey (WebAuthN) authentication 🥳
Getting the users from my FreeIPA LDAP via a secured Wireguard tunnel that only allows port 636 to my IPA replica server in my DMZ.
Works like a charm. Once the handful of users on my instance have linked their new Keycloak identity with their Forgejo account, I can disable the old OIDC with Authentik 🙂

Wel goed opletten: als je in het verleden enthousiast gmail of outlook gebruikt hebt, zijn er mogelijk ook websites waarop je je inloggegevens moet aanpassen.
Gebruik daarvoor altijd een password manager, dan gebruik je tenminste op alle websites een ander password, wel zo veilig.
Ik heb goede ervaring met ProtonPass.

Linux sysadmin question (since it's no longer possible to find actual answers via search on the Internet):
How can I configure the PATH to *always* have a specific directory in it when a shell (Bash) is started, regardless of whether the shell is login/non-login, interactive/non-interactive, etc.?
The normal steps (adding a file in /etc/profile.d which adds to the path) work for login/interactive shells, but not for shells opened by sshd with a command to execute (no pty).

Well fuck. Remember when I said I was going to be deploying a #Linux desktop for my mom's church's office? (My mother is the church secretary).
Yeah, that can't happen, because they use a proprietary church management software that is Windows based. Linux clients exist, but only for RHEL, SuSE Enterprise, CentOS, and Ubuntu. They state the packages will not work on other distros. The church will never pay for RedHat nor SuSE, CentOS is fucking shite, and Ubuntu is beyond shite. Even if I can get it working in another distro, the minute they have an issue, the vendor will stonewall the minute they see an unsupported configuration.
So I get to support a fucking Windows 11 machine.
I haven't touched a Windows computer in close to a year. This is gonna be fun on the bun.

pain point the current: flatpak packaging of photography software - FFS people WHY? did a LLM tell you that that was a good idea?
(flatpaks are software packages that have very limited access to the file system - 10/10 for security but minus several million for good thinking when the whole point of the software is to do things with (and allow me to emphasise this bit) _other_ _files_. Like photo files, for instance.)

Ich habe auf die Schnelle (~45min Recherche und Tests) keine Anleitung oder Infos dazu gefunden, wie man die Daten exportiert/importiert.
Ältere Anleitungen, die auf einer Datei "StickNotes.snt" basieren, funktionieren nicht, weil es diese Datei auf dem betroffenen Rechner nicht gibt.
I run 21 OCI containers with Podman (and Quadlets!) on my ARM aarch64 server on Netcup with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 10.1. Memory utilization is a bit high, but the system is working absolutely stable for months.
TLS certificates and ingress-routing is handled fully automatically by Traefik and labels, attached to the containers.
Having everything containerized, makes it really easy to clean up 🙂 There's some applications, that I don't even use anymore. Time to clean up.
Then I'll continue, replacing the old Authentik installation with Keycloak for my OIDC applications (Forgejo, Wallos etc.)

For any #Canadian Linux users out there who haven't done their #taxes and are wondering about whether they have to fire up a Windows VM just to run tax software again, here's an option. There's also potentially a nasty surprise in store for you if you do this in VirtualBox.
I've used a number of tax packages over the years, as they merged or got bought out by other companies. For the last 10, it's been #UFile, which is #Windows-only. [1] I usually fire up an old Windows VM in #VirtualBox, but if you're running a recent Linux kernel, you'll find VirtualBox is broken and won't run. Oops. Now you're in a panic because you need to do your taxes before the end of the month...
I haven't checked to see if you could use kvm/virt-manager or another #VM system.
The next obvious way, if you don't want to install Windows on bare metal, is to try using #Wine to run the software directly on #Linux. If you search the net, you'll find a little info about doing this. A lot is ancient, but still seems to apply - but the stuff I found was not detailed at all, just people saying "it works" or similar.
I was able to finish the process, but ran into some issues, a few of which were not obvious. I thought this might help others.
[1] Well, they have an online version you can use in a browser, but I don't know why anyone would feel comfortable putting such sensitive information into some random company's web page.

Perso, je suis degooglisé depuis 7 ans et m'en porte très bien. À grand coup de #duckduckgo, de #eOS, #linux, #protonmail et #protondrive, je me suis affranchi de mes comptes Google. Me reste juste Gmaps qui n'est égalé par aucun logiciel FOSS, et YouTube auquel j'accède par Newpipe pour suivre les créateurs que j'apprécie, sans tracking ni algorithme.
A part le passage à Linux qui demande quelques efforts, aucun de ces changements ne demande de sacrifices sur leur usabilité.

Ok! Initial build script for writerdeckOS v2.0 is done.
I even coded a menu to allow for easy change of default word processor / text editor.
The Terminal Edition defaults to using wordgrinder, but the follow word processors and text editors are loaded into the system and its easy to swap over to them:
- WordGrinder
- Tilde
- Word Perfect
- Joe
- Emacs
- Vi / Vim
- Nano
- Micro
And it's easy to install and run a custom app (text editor or otherwise!).
Also, I added nmtui - a Terminal User Interface for Network Manager to connect to the internet if needed (eg to install a new app or to configure synced cloud folders).
I need to run a couple more QA tests for this and then I'll start putting together the installation media. After testing that on a couple of laptops, I'll push it out officially!

Ich bin gerade dabei auf #Linux umzusteigen, und habe mir meinen eigenen Home Server eingerichtet. Jetzt kann ich endlich meine Fotos in der privaten Cloud mit #immich katalogisieren. Aber eine Sache, die mir richtig gute gefällt und die ich nicht auf dem Schirm hatte, ist die Möglichkeit ein lokales #AI Modell für Suche nach Bildern zu nutzen. Es macht echt Spaß mit Texteingabe Bilder zu finden, die ich vergessen (oder verdrängt) hatte.
Und jetzt frage ich mich, ginge sowas nicht auch mit #Email? Ich habe mal nach #Thunderbird plugins gesucht, und da gibt es welche mit #ollama Support - aber nur für Schreiben, Übersetzen und Zusammenfassen einzelner Emails. Da kann ich sie auch gleich selber alle durchlesen... Ich will "Sitzung bei XY mit Thema ABC" eingeben können und Treffer erhalten, die diese bestimmten Wörter nicht direkt benutzen - und das alles mit voller Kontrolle über die digitale #Privatsphäre. Das wäre mal wirklich hilfreich

Linux-Nutzer in der Webstatistik
Bei Caschy ist die aktuelle Betriebssystem-Statistik erschienen und dass Linux eine Verbreitung von knapp über 3% in der Desktop-Nutzung besitzt. Die Server-Nutzung lassen wir hier aus der Diskussion mal raus.
Mal abgesehen davon, dass Webstatistiken von StatCounter so semi sind, beachtet ja kaum jemand, dass Linux-Nutzer oft deutlich mehr Wert auf Privatsphäre legen und daher eine überdurchschnittlich hohe Anzahl der User die Web-Trackings blockiert und somit nicht in die Statistik zählt.
Die Zahl der Blockierer ist auf anderen Betriebssystemen mangels Interesse und Möglichkeiten deutlich geringer und deshalb werden sie viel häufiger gezählt. Eine Messung mittels der User-Agents auf Abruf-Ebene wäre unter Umständen genauer, weil deutlich weniger Endnutzer ihre User-Agent-Kennung ändern.

Der Umstieg von Windows auf Linux ist vollbracht. Nur den Potter habe ich noch nicht hinbekommen, ansonsten wird jetzt alles mit Nobara erledigt.
Was ich so richtig erstaunlich finde, ist die Tatsache, dass ich heute wieder viel aufgeschlossener gegenüber neuen Programmen bin. Ich habe dadurch bemerkt, wie eingefahren ich doch war.

Der #karfreitag stellt mich vor neue Herausforderungen.
Mein kürzlich erlangtes #Linux Tablet schaltet nach Eingabe des Benutzernamens den Monitor ab. Also Verschlüsselung beim booten ok, Benutzername und Kennwort vor dem System ok, dann lädt es kurz und dann, blubb, display aus/schwarz.
lauter/leiser Tasten lösen noch immer einen Ton aus, das System selbst scheint responsiv aber ich bekomme das Display nicht mehr an 😄
Das macht es nur im Akkubetrieb und ich werde jetzt rausfinden (müssen) was das soll ^^

Die Nutzung von #Linux ist um 3% gestiegen und die von #Windows um 4% gefallen. Klingt erst mal nicht nach viel. Wenn man aber sieht, das Linux gerade mal bei 5% steht merkt man, dass das eine glatte Verdopplung ist.

Mein Desktop unter Fedora 43 die Nutzung von Linux und Open Source Software mit entsprechenden Messengern und Mail Anwendungen und ohne Google / Microsoft / Apple und mit KI dann wenn ich sie haben möchte ist und bleibt einfach eine bessere und auch Nachhaltigerer und vor allem Selbs bestimmender Umgang mit Informationstechnologie.

Nextcloud, originally a fork of ownCloud, has launched Euro-Office, a fork of OnlyOffice (pissing off OnlyOffice). Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.
Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.
This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

Es gibt Monate, die sich nach Technik anfühlen. Der April gehört nicht dazu. Der April ist ein Monat der Resilienz. Ein Monat, in dem es nicht darum geht, das nächste Tool zu testen oder den hundertsten Workflow zu optimieren, sondern darum, eine Frage zu beantworten, die wir alle viel zu lange vor uns herschieben: Was passiert eigentlich, wenn plötzlich alles weg ist?
Diese Frage stellt sich niemand gerne. Sie ist unangenehm. Sie riecht nach Paranoia, nach dem Gefühl, man müsste sich auf Katastrophen vorbereiten, die wahrscheinlich nie eintreten werden. Aber dann gibt es diese Momente. Der Laptop startet eines Morgens einfach nicht mehr. Das Smartphone rutscht aus der Tasche und ist weg, vielleicht im Zug, vielleicht auf der Straße, vielleicht für immer. Ein Wasserschaden in der Wohnung macht nicht nur Möbel unbrauchbar, sondern auch das Gerät, auf dem alles war. Oder es trifft einen ganz anders: Diese eine Schadsoftware, die sich einschleicht und plötzlich jedes angeschlossene Laufwerk verschlüsselt, als wäre jemand gekommen und hätte einen Schlüssel herumgedreht, den nur er besitzt.

Da Kdocker unter Linux mit X11 nicht funktioniert habe ich mal gesucht, ob es eine gangbare Alternative gibt um Programme in KDE ins Systray verschieben zu können. Ein wenig suchen brachte auch ein Ergebnis: Das funktioniert sogar erstaunlich gut.
Bei #Manjaro knirscht es ein wenig. Jetzt soll ein Verein gegründet werden, der sich künftig um die #LinuxDistribution kümmert. Da ist sicher noch vieles zu entscheiden und zu organisieren. Ich hab mir das für @ctmagazin und heise+ angeschaut. Und bei der Gelegenheit erst gesehen, wie cool pamac auf der Konsole ist.

我发现，网上太多WSL安装桌面的教程了，而这样就浪费了你们的匠心，所以，我提了这个issue。在运行包括但不限于gnome-shell,gnome-session,xfce4-panel进程时，杀死他们。
首先，检查是不是session或者wm或者dm，只要是的，杀死。
随后，列一个黑名单，其中包括panel,desktop。包含在里面的，杀死。
最后，包括但不限于nautilus,thunar,gnome-text-editor,gedit,xfce4-appfinder的桌面独立组件不要杀死。
你说你们承诺过你们可以让用户用WSL做任何事情？
没事，可以设置一个WSL_RUN_DESKTOP环境变量，默认没有，有的时候，不再杀死桌面进程，但是警告内容如下：

@itsfoss That there are ways to run EVERYTHING you need and not use Windows as your primary desktop OS. I finally made the switch over to Linux both for work and at-home use several years ago.
For work, there are a few programs that only exist for Windows - for that I run QEMU/KVM and run Windows in a virtual machine. So I guess technically I still have to use Windows, but for 99% of my working day, I am using Linux. For home life? 100% Linux!

Zum Thema #serverhygiene: Meine Postfix-Config war wohl etwas in die Jahre gekommen.
Problem: Mein Server erzeugte Bounces und versuchte externe Zustellung (die zwar geblockt ist), aber die Queue lief voll.
Ursache:
`local_recipient_maps = passwd.byname` → System-User wie `mail` wurden als gültige Empfänger akzeptiert.
Fix:
`local_recipient_maps = hash:/etc/aliases`
Erkenntnis:
Bei Postfix + Cyrus keine System-User als Empfänger zulassen.
Veronica Explains bringt ein neues Video, wie man Linux auf einen alten 90'er Jahre #PowerMac installiert. Da musste ich an meine Erfahrungen mit dem PowerMac G5 denken. Da hatte ich nach dem #OSX eine ganze Zeit lang #Gentoo Linux drauf laufen. Das hat mir am Anfang echt viele graue Haare gebracht. 🧓🍏🐧
Aber last not least lief es dann sehr flott auf der alten Kiste, bis mit dann das ständige Kompilieren zuviel wurde und ich die Hardware verkaufte.

Resilienz beginnt dort, wo Daten nicht mehr vom Zufall abhängen
Es gibt Monate, die sich nach Technik anfühlen. Der April gehört nicht dazu. Der April ist ein Monat der Resilienz. Ein Monat, in dem es nicht darum geht, das nächste Tool zu testen oder den hundertsten Workflow zu optimieren, sondern darum, eine Frage zu beantworten, die wir alle viel zu lange vor uns herschieben: Was passiert eigentlich, wenn plötzlich alles weg ist?
Diese Frage stellt sich niemand gerne. Sie ist unangenehm. Sie riecht nach Paranoia, nach dem Gefühl, man müsste sich auf Katastrophen vorbereiten, die wahrscheinlich nie eintreten werden. Aber dann gibt es diese Momente. Der Laptop startet eines Morgens einfach nicht mehr. Das Smartphone rutscht aus der Tasche und ist weg, vielleicht im Zug, vielleicht auf der Straße, vielleicht für immer. Ein Wasserschaden in der Wohnung macht nicht nur Möbel unbrauchbar, sondern auch das Gerät, auf dem alles war. Oder es trifft einen ganz anders: Diese eine Schadsoftware, die sich einschleicht und plötzlich jedes angeschlossene Laufwerk verschlüsselt, als wäre jemand gekommen und hätte einen Schlüssel herumgedreht, den nur er besitzt.

Morgens den PC hochfahren, geht es nach dem Filecheck nicht weiter (Bild 1). Stillen Start deaktiviert, zeigt Bild 2 das Ende. Vom USB-Stick ein Live-System starten wollen, um nach möglichen Fehlern zu suchen, zeigt nur einen Unterstrich.
Im Kalender steht nicht, dass der heutige Tag für die Müllkippe vorgesehen ist 🤬

Monitor zeigt den Startprozess. Letzte Zeile lautet:

Danach passiert nichts mehr.
Neuer Laptop ist heute angekommen. Habe mich für einen Dell Pro Max 14 MC14250 entschieden. Ein paar Eckdaten:
* Intel Core Ultra 7 265H (16 Core)
* 32 GB RAM
* 1 TB SSD
Es waren auch noch einige andere Modelle von Dell, Lenovo (ThinkPad) und Framework in der Auswahl, aber der hier hat die beste theoretische Performance im Verhältnis zum Preis geboten. Allem voran wegen der CPU.
Ein anderer wichtiger Punkt: Offizieller (!) Linux Support mit Ubuntu ab Werk. Aber was mit Ubuntu läuft, läuft noch viel besser mit Fedora 😉...
In diesem 🧵will ich von meinen ersten Erfahrungen berichten.
den es sind meine Daten und vor allem meine Metadaten. Aber vor allem ist es ein viel besseres Gefühl zumindest für mich ein Stück weniger von der Amerikanschen willkür abhängig zu sein.

Auf dem Bild zu sehen ist mein Fedora Desktop mit einem selbstaufgenommen Hintergrund Bil in Düsseldorf Kalkum mit einem Verwunschenteil das Wassergrabens dessen Leicht Grünes Wasser von den Herbstsonnen Strallen Glitzert einige Bäume sind noch Grün andere zeigen eine deutlische ankündigung des Herbstes mit Braunen Blätern du nur noch verinzelt an den Zweigen hängen.

So. Das man unter #Linux hervorragend Gaming betreiben kann, teils besser als unter Windoof, hat sich ja rumgesprochen. Mach ich ja nun seit über nem Jahr.
Aber auch Musik machen mit #Daw läuft sahnig. Crossgrade auf #Bitwig gemacht und bisher sehr angetan. Auch was ich so an Synth Plugins unbedingt haben mag findet sich. #CachyOS
Bleibt nur noch der Wunsch nach ner Linuxversion von Affinity…
In letzter Zeit viel mit eBPF experimentiert. Tools wie bpftrace und tetragon machen Observability next-level. Kein Latency von System-Calls mehr, pure Performance. Wer ist schon deep into eBPF? #Linux #DevOps #Observability

When I arrived at college in the early 90's Unix machines were just not available to home users, so the Unix machines at my school were something I had to learn from scratch. The computer center at my campus had several dense 2 sided quick reference handouts for common commands at the command line, and for using Emacs printed on colored paper in stacks in each lab.
Fast forward, it's 2026 there is probably a better quick start for my kids... what is it?
