#Maine Governor backs #MillionaireTax, flipping from prior stance
By Greg Ryan Bloomberg,Updated April 2, 2026
"Maine Governor Janet Mills now supports increasing taxes on the state’s richest residents, reversing her past opposition after lagging in recent polls for a key Democratic Senate primary.
"Mills on Thursday endorsed a millionaire tax included in a budget proposal that passed a committee for the Democrat-controlled legislature. She vetoed a similar increase in 2024 and maintained that such a measure was short-sighted in an interview just a few weeks ago.
"Mills’ flip-flop comes as the 78-year-old trails political newcomer #GrahamPlatner in their contest to be the Democratic nominee to take on Republican #UselessSusanCollins in November. Platner, a 41-year-old oyster farmer, has called for higher taxes on the rich."

Maine has no single statewide law that specifically targets rooster crowing — but that does not mean your rooster is free to crow without legal consequence. The rules that govern crowing in Maine are scattered across local ordinances, noise codes, and zoning laws that vary dramatically from one municipality to the next.
Whether you keep a rooster and want to stay on the right side of the law, or you live next to one and wonder what your options are, understanding how Maine’s patchwork of regulations works is the first step. This guide walks you through how state and local rules apply to rooster crowing, what quiet hours look like, how complaints are handled, and what penalties can follow.
If you are searching for a single Maine statute that addresses rooster crowing by name, you will not find one. Roosters are prohibited in most Maine municipalities that have chicken ordinances, and even in areas without specific chicken rules, general noise ordinances frequently make rooster-keeping impractical in residential settings.
Instead of a top-down state law, Maine leaves rooster regulation almost entirely to individual towns and cities. This means your legal situation depends almost entirely on your zip code. Maine’s backyard chicken laws vary by town, covering permits, flock limits, coop rules, and rooster restrictions. A rooster that is perfectly legal on a rural property in one county could trigger a formal complaint and enforcement action just a few miles away in a residential zone.
Some towns have enacted explicit bans on roosters in residential or single-family zones. For example, Old Town has an ordinance that prohibits livestock and poultry in single-family and general residence zoned areas. Other communities, like Cape Elizabeth, have grappled with the issue and found that neighbors who called police multiple times found that nothing could be done because rooster noise was not covered under existing laws against disturbing the peace or for animal control — making it a difficult issue for police to handle without a specific ordinance.

In rural and unorganized townships, the picture is different. In rural areas and unorganized townships, rooster restrictions are far less common. If you are on a large rural property with significant distance between your flock and neighboring homes, keeping a rooster is generally feasible both legally and practically. That said, Maine’s general nuisance statutes can still apply if neighbors lodge complaints about chronic noise disturbance.
For a broader look at how other states handle these rules, see how Alaska approaches rooster laws or explore the regulations in Arizona for comparison.
Key Insight: There is no single Maine state law banning or permitting rooster crowing. Your legal exposure depends entirely on your town’s ordinances, zoning classification, and whether a general noise ordinance applies to animal sounds.
Even where no rooster-specific rule exists, Maine municipalities routinely use general noise ordinances to address crowing complaints. Many towns have noise ordinances that are pertinent to excessive barking, howling, or crowing, treating a crowing rooster the same way they would treat a persistently barking dog or a loud piece of machinery.
Noise ordinances in Maine cities typically operate on a decibel threshold or a time-of-day framework. Many municipalities prohibit “unreasonable noise” between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM — a window that roosters reliably violate. Even during daytime hours, sustained or repetitive noise that disturbs neighbors can constitute a civil nuisance under Maine law.

8 Types of Woodpeckers in Kentucky: Complete Identification Guide
The City of Sanford’s municipal code provides a clear example of how animal noise is treated under general noise rules. It explicitly identifies owning, possessing, or harboring any animal or bird which, frequently or for continued duration, makes sounds that create noise disturbance across a residential real property boundary as a violation. A crowing rooster fits squarely within that definition.
Bar Harbor’s ordinance takes a similar approach. It identifies the keeping of any animal or bird which by causing frequent or long-continued noise without provocation shall disturb the comfort or repose of any person in the vicinity as a noise violation. Note that the standard here is not about volume alone — frequency and duration matter just as much.
It is also worth knowing just how loud a rooster actually is. A rooster’s crow measures, on average, about 80 to 90 decibels. That level exceeds the thresholds set in many Maine noise ordinances, particularly during early morning hours. The loud and incessant crowing is also why many urban neighborhoods prohibit roosters.
If you also keep chickens and want to understand the full regulatory picture for your flock, the backyard chicken laws in Maine page covers coop requirements, permit rules, and flock limits by town.
Important Note: Even if your town has no explicit rooster ban, a general noise ordinance covering animal sounds can still be used to cite you for crowing — especially during nighttime quiet hours or if the crowing is persistent during the day.

Arkansas Dove Season: Dates, Limits, and Regulations You Need to Know
One of the most practically significant aspects of Maine noise law for rooster owners is the concept of quiet hours — designated time periods during which noise standards are stricter or noise is prohibited entirely. Many Maine municipalities prohibit “unreasonable noise” between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Since roosters reliably begin crowing before sunrise, this window is a particular problem.
Bar Harbor’s noise ordinance, for example, identifies protected quiet hours. The hours between and including 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM are considered protected quiet time under local ordinance. A rooster crowing at 4:00 AM in Bar Harbor would be in clear violation of that window.
Real-world cases in Maine illustrate exactly how early rooster crowing creates legal exposure. In the Old Town case, the rooster started his crowing every day around 4 a.m., from his cage in a driveway in the middle of the city. That pre-dawn crowing was central to the complaints and subsequent legal action the city pursued.
Quiet hours are not the only time-based concern. Roosters crow all the time — morning, afternoon, and evening. They crow to greet the day, to lead their flocks to forage, to cue a boundary, and to alert about predators. This means that even outside of formally designated quiet hours, sustained daytime crowing can still trigger a noise complaint if it is frequent enough to qualify as a disturbance under your town’s ordinance.
Pro Tip: If you keep a rooster, consider housing him in a darkened, insulated coop space at night. Keeping your rooster in a completely dark space — with zero light coming in — until the morning can help prevent pre-dawn crowing, which is the most likely trigger for noise complaints during protected quiet hours.

Some rooster owners also use management tools to reduce noise. A rooster collar does not necessarily stop your rooster from crowing, but it does make it more difficult for him to do so at the volume he prefers. A rooster collar is simply a collar designed to restrict airflow when a rooster attempts to crow. However, these are not guaranteed to bring crowing below ordinance thresholds, and their use does not automatically protect you from a noise complaint.
States like Colorado and Delaware also use time-of-day frameworks to regulate animal noise — a useful reference if you are comparing how Maine’s approach fits into broader regional patterns.
If you are a Maine resident living next to a crowing rooster, you have several avenues available — ranging from an informal conversation to formal legal action. The most effective path often depends on whether your municipality has a clear ordinance that applies to the situation.
Your first step should always be documentation. Keep a noise log with dates, times, duration, and the impact on your daily life, such as sleep disturbance or interrupted work. Record audio or video with timestamps showing continuous or repeated crowing. Short, clear clips are valuable for authorities and mediators. Collecting statements from other neighbors helps show it is a community issue rather than a single complaint.
Before escalating, many disputes are resolved through direct communication. Delivering a polite, factual note that explains the disturbance, references specific times, and offers possible solutions — such as keeping the rooster inside during early morning or moving the coop — is often effective. If you speak in person, keep it calm and focused on solving the problem.
Featured: Black Birds in California: 10 Species Every Bird Watcher Should Know
If direct contact does not work, mediation is a recognized option. Mediators are trained to listen to both sides, identify problems, keep everyone focused on the real issues, and suggest compromises. A mediator will not make a decision for you, but will help you and your neighbor agree on a resolution. Many cities have community mediation groups that train volunteers to mediate disputes in their own neighborhoods.
When informal approaches fail, you can file a formal complaint. Ask animal control authorities to enforce local noise laws, and be persistent. File a non-emergency complaint with animal control, code enforcement, or the city’s noise office, and provide your log and recordings.
Common Mistake: Many neighbors call the police before checking whether a specific ordinance applies. In towns without a rooster-specific rule or a noise ordinance covering animal sounds, police may feel they have nothing to enforce — making documentation and a formal complaint to code enforcement a more productive starting point.
As a last resort, civil legal action is available. You can sue in small claims court — it is easy and inexpensive, and you do not need a lawyer. If your neighbor keeps disturbing you, you can sue and ask the court for money damages or to order the neighbor to stop the noise.
For context on how neighbor disputes over roosters play out in other states, see how Florida and Arkansas handle similar situations.

When a rooster crowing complaint is filed in Maine, the investigation and enforcement process generally flows through local code enforcement officers, animal control officers, or the police department — depending on which agency has jurisdiction under your municipality’s ordinances.
In most Maine towns, enforcement begins with a complaint triggering an officer response. Any member of the relevant police department is typically authorized to enforce noise ordinances upon complaint. Officers may also act on their own observation. In the Old Town case, the rooster was first discovered when the code enforcement officer heard it while doing an inspection in the neighborhood, and he sent a notice to the owner that same day.
After a complaint is received, the process typically involves a warning before escalating to fines or legal action. Many municipalities will issue warnings, fines, or orders to remove roosters after documented complaints. The Old Town case illustrates how this escalation works in practice: after nearly a year of telling the resident the rooster must go, Old Town filed a lawsuit asking a court to force the owner to remove the animals.
Lawsuits are used as a last resort by municipalities. Lawsuits are filed only as a last resort by the city; if any resident facing a lawsuit takes care of the violation before a court date, the city would not go to court. This means that compliance — even late compliance — can stop formal legal proceedings before they reach a courtroom.
In some towns, enforcement authority is specifically assigned. In Sanford, the noise chapter is enforced by the Police Department, with violations prosecuted as civil violations and civil penalties imposed through the issuance of a citation and enforced through the district court.

Backyard Chicken Laws in Colorado: What You Need to Know Before Getting Hens
Pro Tip: If you receive a warning from a code enforcement officer, respond promptly and in writing. Documenting your good-faith efforts to address the problem — such as adjusting the coop, using a no-crow collar, or changing your management routine — can demonstrate compliance and reduce the likelihood of escalation to fines or legal action.
It is also worth noting that you should try to notify authorities while the noise is continuing so they can measure or hear it for themselves, and some cities will not act until the noise affects two or more persons to prevent complaints from excessively sensitive individuals.
Maine residents dealing with related animal law questions may also find it helpful to review dog leash laws in Maine and beekeeping laws in Maine, as both follow similar local enforcement structures.
The penalties you face for a rooster-related noise violation in Maine depend on which ordinance applies, which municipality you are in, and how many prior offenses have been recorded. Penalties range from modest civil fines for a first offense to court-ordered removal of the animal and significant cumulative fines for repeated violations.
Oakland, Maine’s unnecessary noise ordinance provides a clear illustration of a tiered fine structure. Violations are treated as civil violations and enforced by a law enforcement officer, with fines of $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense, $500 for the third offense, and $1,000 for the fourth and all subsequent offenses.
See also: Can Chickens Eat Apples?
Sanford follows a similar but slightly different scale. The civil penalties are cumulative, and each day the violation continues is a separate offense — with a first citation at $50, a second at $100, and a third and subsequent citations at $200. The per-day structure is important: if crowing continues for 30 days after a citation, each of those days can be counted as a separate offense.
In more serious cases, courts can order the removal of the animal entirely. In the Old Town lawsuit, the city asked the court to rule that the owner violated the ordinance and to order her to remove all poultry from the property. The city also sought a per-day fine for violating the ordinance. Maine law sets the maximum fine at $5,000 total.
Beyond fines, there is also the risk of attorney’s fees being assessed against you. If the town is the prevailing party in an enforcement action, it may be entitled to attorney’s fees and associated costs unless extraordinary circumstances make such an award unjust.

It is worth noting that fines are not the only consequence. A court can also order nuisance abatement. Under Maine law, when a person is adjudged guilty of a nuisance, the court, in addition to any fine imposed, may order the nuisance abated or removed at the expense of the defendant. In practical terms, this means a judge can order you to permanently remove your rooster from the property.
Important Note: Because penalties accumulate daily in many Maine municipalities, a single unresolved complaint can snowball into a significant financial liability within weeks. If you receive a formal notice, address it immediately rather than waiting.
If you are curious how Maine’s penalty structure compares to neighboring states, see how Mississippi handles rooster crowing laws or review the regulations in Connecticut for a New England comparison. You can also browse the full rooster laws resource library for state-by-state coverage.
Ultimately, the smartest approach in Maine is to know your town’s specific ordinances before you bring a rooster home — and to act quickly if a complaint is filed. The legal framework may be local rather than statewide, but its consequences are very real.

Maine is poised to freeze large datacenter construction, which would make it the first state to enact such a measure as communities across the U.S. grapple with fallout from the boom in artificial intelligence.
The Maine bill calls for a ban on major new data-center construction until November 2027, so the state can assess the impact of such development on the environment and electricity grid.
The freeze would apply to data-center projects of at least 20 megawatts.

Maine is one of the most wildlife-rich states in the Northeast, and every spring, its forests, wetlands, and shorelines come alive — including with snakes. If you’ve ever spotted one on a trail or near your yard and wondered whether you’re in the thick of snake season, you’re not alone.
The good news is that understanding when snakes are active in Maine takes most of the mystery out of these encounters. Whether you’re a hiker, a homeowner, or simply curious about the wildlife around you, knowing when snakes come out, where they tend to be, and how to respond if you cross paths with one makes all the difference.
Snake season in Maine generally runs from late April through mid-October, though the exact timing depends on weather conditions each year. Snake season generally runs from spring through late fall, with snakes beginning to emerge in March or April to search for food and mates, remaining active well into October if conditions are right.
Because Maine sits in the northeastern corner of the country, its winters are long and cold, which pushes snake emergence later than in southern states. Snakes in southern regions may emerge earlier due to milder winters than in colder northern climates. In Maine specifically, you’re unlikely to see a snake before late April in most years, and by November, virtually all snakes have returned to their overwintering sites.
Snakes do not truly hibernate — instead, they brumate. When it becomes too cold to sustain their metabolisms and prey becomes scarce, they enter this state of reduced activity. They burrow underground or find shelter in rock crevices to escape freezing temperatures in a process called brumation — a reptile’s version of hibernation where they slow down but don’t sleep completely.
Featured content: When Do Snakes Come Out in Delaware? Season, Species, and Safety Tips
Key Insight: Maine’s snake season is shorter than most U.S. states due to its cold climate. Expect snakes to be active roughly from late April to mid-October, with the most sightings concentrated in the warmer summer months.
As the average daytime temperature pushes back above 60°F, snakes will exit brumation and seek out warm, sunny spots to increase their body heat. This threshold is a reliable indicator that snake season is underway in Maine.
While snakes can appear anytime between late April and October, their activity is far from uniform across those months. Snakes typically emerge in spring as temperatures rise, becoming most active through summer and early fall — a period crucial for feeding, mating, and preparing for the next cycle of dormancy.
Spring (late April – May) is one of the most important times to be aware of snakes in Maine. Spring marks a time of reawakening — snakes seek mates after months of dormancy, and mating seasons often occur shortly after emergence to take advantage of abundant prey availability in warmer months. Spring also coincides with the mating season for many snakes, when males become more active as they search for females, engaging in competitive displays.
Summer (June – August) brings the highest overall activity levels. Summer brings high activity levels as snakes feed intensively to build energy reserves, hunting rodents, amphibians, insects, birds, and other small animals — and during this time, you might spot them basking on rocks or roadsides to regulate body temperature.

How Many Types of Rattlesnakes Are There?
Early fall (September – mid-October) sees snakes preparing to brumate. Activity slows but doesn’t stop entirely. The northern water snake, for instance, breeds in April, May, and the early fall, and gives birth to live young from August through October.
Pro Tip: The best time of day to spot snakes in Maine during summer is mid-morning or late afternoon. Warm weather may show snakes in the mid-day sun, hot weather may push them to twilight hours, and heat waves may push them into making night runs.
Spring through early fall brings the most activity, especially on mild mornings and warm late afternoons — which makes timing just as useful as location when you hope to spot one.
Maine is home to nine snake species, including the northern water snake and the common garter snake. All of them follow roughly the same seasonal pattern, though individual emergence timing varies slightly. Here’s a look at each species you might encounter and when they’re most active.
Important Note: The black racer snake is a state-listed endangered species in Maine. According to a Maine Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologist, while it is technically legal to kill most snakes in your yard in Maine, intentionally killing a black racer snake could result in up to one year in prison and up to $2,000 in fines under the Maine Endangered Species Act.

Here’s a fact that might genuinely surprise you: Maine is one of only three states in the United States that has no venomous snakes — Hawaii and Alaska are the others. This makes Maine an exceptionally safe state for outdoor enthusiasts concerned about snake bites.
Maine was once home to the timber rattlesnake, an extremely venomous pit viper, but its population was wiped out sometime in the 1800s. According to Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, “Maine’s 10th snake species, the timber rattlesnake, is extirpated, with no credible evidence of the species available since the mid-1800s.”
If you’re curious about venomous species found in neighboring states or beyond, our guides on the most venomous snakes in North America and the most venomous snakes in the U.S. provide helpful context. You can also learn about the difference between venomous and poisonous snakes — a distinction worth knowing.
While none of Maine’s native snake species are venomous, encounters can still be startling, especially near water where snakes hunt for fish and amphibians. None are venomous, so their bites are not deadly, but you should take caution when approaching them regardless, because a startled animal may bite out of fear.
Pro Tip: Even though no venomous snakes live in Maine today, it’s still wise to treat every snake encounter with respect and distance. The bite from a common garter snake, while non-venomous to humans, can cause skin irritation including swelling, redness, and itching.
Recommended: Russell’s Viper Profile and Information
To understand how Maine compares to states with more significant venomous snake populations, you can read about the most venomous snakes in Georgia or the most venomous snakes in Florida for a broader perspective.
Maine’s varied landscape — from coastal marshes to inland forests and rocky hillsides — provides a wide range of habitats that different snake species call home. Knowing where snakes tend to concentrate can help you stay aware during outdoor activities.
Wetlands, lakes, and rivers are among the top snake habitats in the state. Most snakes in Maine stick close to lakes, rivers, and wetlands, where they can hide easily, stay cool, and find plenty to eat — and since the state has more than 6,000 lakes and ponds, a few spots have enough good habitat to support multiple species, meaning surprise sightings are more likely.
Forests and woodland edges are also prime territory. Maine’s forests, both deciduous and coniferous, provide excellent habitats for many snake species, with the forest floor’s rich leaf litter and fallen logs offering shelter and hunting grounds.
Rocky areas and hillsides attract snakes for thermoregulation. Snakes rely on the environment to regulate their body temperature — that is why you may see them stretched out on rocks during the summer, or in caves, woodpiles, and other less ideal spaces to keep cool.

Coming across a snake — whether on a hiking trail, near a pond, or in your backyard — can be startling. But knowing how to respond calmly and safely makes the encounter far less stressful for both you and the snake.
Most snakes prefer to avoid people and will quickly retreat if given space. If you come across one while boating, fishing, or hiking, remain calm, keep your distance, and allow it to move away undisturbed.

If a snake enters your home or yard:
Common Mistake: Many people try to identify a snake before deciding how to react. Even experts note it can be really hard to tell snake species apart, and all snakes can be appreciated from a safe distance. In Maine, identification matters less since no species is venomous — but it’s still important not to handle any wild snake.
Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem by keeping insect and rodent populations in balance, and some species can even prevent the spread of disease to people, pets, and livestock by feeding on rodent and insect carriers. Coexisting with them is not only safe in Maine — it’s genuinely beneficial. For more on the animals that naturally keep snake populations in check, see our article on animals that eat snakes.
Whether you’re exploring one of Maine’s many state parks, fishing along a river, or tending your garden, snake encounters during the active season are a normal part of outdoor life in the Pine Tree State. Judge limits records #Maine has to give federal government in #transgender athlete lawsuit
by Dan Lampariello, March 31, 2026
"The judge blocked the release of records that could identify transgender student athletes or reveal personal and medical details, calling them too sensitive.
"The ruling also denies access to internal discussions tied to individual cases, but allows broader complaints and communications, as long as all identifying information is removed."

#BrunswickME - "The internal watchdog at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that about 100 of the nation's most #contaminated toxic waste sites, including one in #Maine, are in areas prone to #NaturalDisasters, posing a potential public health threat.
"The EPA's Office of Inspector General issued two new reports last week that are part of a series assessing the weather-related vulnerabilities of the 157 federal #Superfund sites prioritized for cleanup due to the serious risk they pose to public health and the environment. About 3 million Americans live within a mile of a Superfund site, while 13 million people live within 3 miles.
"Brunswick Landing, the site of the former #BrunswickNavalAirStation, is among the Superfund sites that were found to be at risk from multiple natural-disaster threats. According to the Inspector General, Brunswick Landing is one of 49 sites in coastal areas that are at risk from #SeaLevelRise or #StormSurge from hurricanes. Many of those sites are located near highly populated areas and important ecological locales like #ChesapeakeBay .
"Brunswick Landing is also one of 47 low-lying sites that are specifically prone to inland flooding from heavy rain. The Inspector General's review also found 31 sites in areas at high risk for wildfires."

Maine offers some of the most rewarding wild turkey hunting in the Northeast, with healthy populations spread across the state’s diverse mix of hardwood forests, agricultural fields, and river valleys. Whether you’re chasing a longbeard during the spring gobbling season or filling a fall tag, understanding the state’s regulations is the foundation of a successful and legal hunt.
Maine’s turkey hunting rules are managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) and are organized around Wildlife Management Districts (WMDs) — geographic zones that determine your season dates, legal methods, and bag limits. Before you load up the truck, you need to know exactly which WMD you’re hunting in and what rules apply there.
This article walks you through everything you need to know about turkey hunting season in Maine, from spring and fall dates to permit requirements, legal equipment, youth hunting opportunities, and mandatory harvest reporting.
Pro Tip: Always verify current season dates and WMD boundaries directly with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife before your hunt, as regulations can change year to year.
Spring turkey season in Maine is the most popular hunting period in the state, drawing hunters from across New England who want a crack at a vocal tom during the peak of the breeding season. The spring season typically runs from late April through late May, though exact open and close dates vary by Wildlife Management District.
More from this series: Can Macaws Eat Tomatoes?
Maine divides the state into numbered WMDs, and the spring turkey season is structured around these zones. Most WMDs in southern and central Maine open in late April, while northern districts — where turkey populations are less dense — may open later or have more restricted seasons. The statewide spring season generally closes by the end of May.
Legal hunting hours during the spring season run from one-half hour before sunrise to noon. This midday closure is a standard conservation measure designed to protect nesting hens during the afternoon hours when they are most vulnerable. You are not permitted to hunt turkeys after noon during the spring season, regardless of your WMD.
Key Insight: Spring turkey hunting hours in Maine end at noon statewide. Planning your morning setup and knowing when to wrap up is just as important as knowing your season dates.
To find the specific open and close dates for your WMD, consult the current Maine hunting regulations summary published by MDIFW each year. The WMD map is available on the MDIFW website and is an essential planning tool for any Maine turkey hunter.
Fall turkey hunting in Maine offers a different experience from the spring season. Birds are grouped in flocks rather than actively gobbling, which means your strategy shifts toward locating feeding areas, breaking up flocks, and calling scattered birds back in. It’s a challenging and deeply satisfying style of hunting that rewards woodsmanship over call volume.

The 9 Best Duck Breeds for Pets
The fall season is available in select WMDs only — not all districts that are open in spring will have a fall season. Fall turkey seasons in Maine typically run from October into November, overlapping with the state’s archery and firearm deer seasons. This overlap is worth factoring into your planning, especially if you’re hunting on public land where pressure can be higher.
Unlike the spring season, fall turkey hunting in Maine allows hunting during all legal shooting hours — from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. This gives you a full day to work birds moving between roost sites and feeding areas.
Important Note: Fall turkey seasons are only open in specific WMDs. Hunting turkeys during the fall in a closed district is a violation, even if you hold a valid turkey permit. Always confirm your district’s fall season status before heading out.
Hunters pursuing both deer and turkeys during the fall overlap period should pay close attention to which licenses and tags are required for each species, as they are managed separately by MDIFW.
Maine’s turkey bag limits are structured to protect the population while giving hunters a fair opportunity at a quality harvest. Understanding both the statewide limits and any WMD-specific restrictions is essential before you pull the trigger.

For the spring season, the bag limit is one bearded turkey per day, with a season limit of one bearded turkey. Only bearded turkeys may be taken during the spring season — hens without beards are protected. This restriction keeps the breeding population intact and is strictly enforced.
For the fall season, the rules shift somewhat. Both male and female turkeys may be legal game depending on your WMD, but the daily and season bag limits still apply. The fall season bag limit is typically one turkey per permit, and the type of turkey you may harvest (bearded only vs. either sex) depends on the specific district you’re hunting.

A “bearded turkey” in Maine includes both male turkeys (toms and jakes) and any hen that naturally grows a beard — an uncommon but legal harvest. If you’re unsure whether a bird is bearded before shooting, wait for a clearer look. Shooting a beardless hen during a bearded-only season carries significant penalties.
Common Mistake: Assuming a small or young jake is automatically legal during the spring season. Any bearded turkey is legal in spring, but you must be able to confirm the beard before taking the shot. When in doubt, let the bird walk.
Turkey hunting in Maine requires more than just a standard hunting license. You’ll need a combination of licenses and permits that vary based on your residency status, the season you’re hunting, and your WMD. Getting this right before the season opens is non-negotiable.
Here’s what most adult hunters need to legally pursue turkeys in Maine:

Non-residents follow the same permit structure but pay higher license fees. If you’re planning a trip to Maine from out of state, factor in the lottery timeline — spring turkey permits for high-demand WMDs are drawn well before the season opens, so late planning can mean missing out entirely.
Pro Tip: Maine hunting licenses and turkey permits can be purchased online through the MDIFW licensing portal or at any authorized agent statewide. Apply for lottery permits as early as the application window opens to maximize your chances in competitive WMDs.
Hunters who already pursue other game birds in the region will recognize this layered licensing structure. It’s similar to how goose hunting seasons in neighboring states like Maryland and Ohio require both a state license and a federal migratory bird stamp — always confirm what’s required before you go.
Maine regulates not only when you can hunt turkeys but also how. The state specifies which weapons and methods are legal for each season, and using prohibited equipment can result in fines and loss of hunting privileges.
Legal firearms for spring turkey hunting in Maine include:

For shotgun hunters, shot size is restricted to No. 4 shot or smaller (meaning No. 4, 5, 6, 7, 7.5, 8, or 9). Larger shot sizes and slugs are not legal for turkey hunting. Steel and other non-toxic shot are permitted. Rifles are not legal for spring turkey hunting in Maine.
Fall turkey hunters have a broader set of legal methods available, which may include firearms legal for deer hunting depending on the season overlap and district. Always check the current regulation booklet for fall-specific equipment rules in your WMD.
Important Note: Electronic calls are legal for turkey hunting in Maine. This is a notable distinction from some other states, where electronic calls are prohibited for turkeys. You may use electronic turkey calls during both spring and fall seasons.
Baiting turkeys — placing grain, salt, or other attractants to lure birds — is prohibited in Maine. Hunting over bait, even if you did not place it yourself, is also illegal if you knew or should have known the bait was present. This rule applies to both spring and fall seasons.
Decoys are legal and widely used by Maine turkey hunters. There are no restrictions on the number or type of turkey decoys you may use, though common sense and hunter safety should always guide their placement, especially on public land during the fall when other hunters are present.

Maine actively encourages new hunters — particularly young people — to get into the field through dedicated youth seasons and apprentice licensing programs. These opportunities provide a structured, lower-pressure environment for first-time hunters to experience turkey hunting before the general season opens.
Youth Turkey Weekend takes place the weekend before the general spring season opens. During this special season, hunters under 16 years of age may hunt turkeys under the direct supervision of a licensed adult mentor. The youth season typically runs Saturday and Sunday, giving young hunters two full mornings to work birds before the general pressure begins.
Key rules for the Maine Youth Turkey Weekend include:
Key Insight: The Maine Youth Turkey Weekend is one of the best opportunities to introduce a young hunter to the sport. Birds are less pressured, the woods are quieter, and having the season to yourselves creates memories that last a lifetime.
Maine also offers an Apprentice Hunting License for adults who want to try hunting before completing a full hunter education course. An apprentice hunter must be accompanied by a licensed adult hunter at all times and may only purchase an apprentice license a limited number of times before completing the required education course. Apprentice hunters may participate in turkey seasons with the appropriate permits.

If you’re introducing someone new to hunting — whether a child or an adult — Maine’s apprentice and youth programs are the right place to start. The mentored hunting model used in Maine mirrors successful programs across the country, similar to how states like Michigan and Maryland structure their youth deer hunting opportunities.
Maine requires all turkey hunters who successfully harvest a bird to report that harvest. This is not optional — harvest reporting is a legal requirement tied to your permit, and failure to report can result in penalties and affect your eligibility for future permits.
Maine uses a mandatory harvest reporting system for turkeys. After harvesting a turkey, you must report your harvest within a specified timeframe — typically within a set number of days after the kill. Reporting can be completed through the following methods:
When reporting your harvest, you will need to provide information including the date of harvest, the WMD where the bird was taken, the sex of the bird, and basic physical measurements such as beard length and spur length for spring toms. This data is used by MDIFW biologists to monitor turkey population health, track harvest trends, and set future season structures.
Pro Tip: Report your harvest as soon as possible after the kill — don’t wait until the last day of the reporting window. If you’re hunting in a remote area with limited cell service, plan ahead by noting the phone reporting number and having your permit information accessible offline.
Keep exploring: Types of Eagles in Arizona
Your turkey tag must remain attached to the bird at all times during transport and until the bird reaches your permanent residence or a commercial processing facility. Removing the tag before the bird reaches its final destination is a violation, even if you’ve already submitted your harvest report online.
The harvest reporting system is one of the most important tools MDIFW has for managing Maine’s turkey population responsibly. Accurate harvest data directly influences decisions about season length, WMD-specific regulations, and permit allocations in future years. Every report you submit contributes to the long-term health of turkey hunting in the state.
Important Note: If you purchase a turkey permit but do not harvest a bird, you are generally not required to submit a harvest report — but check the current regulation booklet for any mandatory non-harvest reporting requirements that may apply to your permit type or WMD.
Staying current with Maine’s reporting requirements is part of being a responsible hunter. The same principle applies across all regulated hunting seasons — whether you’re pursuing turkeys in Maine or exploring pheasant seasons in Wisconsin or South Dakota, harvest reporting keeps wildlife management data accurate and seasons sustainable for future generations.
Maine’s turkey hunting program continues to grow as the statewide population expands northward into historically unoccupied habitat. By following the regulations, reporting your harvest accurately, and hunting ethically within the WMD framework, you play a direct role in keeping that growth on track — and keeping quality turkey hunting available in Maine for decades to come.

Every spring, one of Maine’s most powerful wild animals quietly steps back into the world. Black bears emerge from months of dormancy hungry, alert, and ready to reclaim their territory across the state’s vast forests and mountain corridors.
Whether you’re a hiker planning a backcountry trip, a homeowner near wooded land, or simply a wildlife enthusiast, understanding when bears come out of hibernation in Maine can help you stay safe and make the most of bear season. This guide covers the full picture — from denning dates to emergence timing, species details, post-hibernation behavior, and practical safety strategies.
Maine black bears typically begin entering their dens in late October through November, with most bears fully denned by mid-November to early December. The exact timing depends on several factors, including food availability, temperature drops, and the individual bear’s condition heading into fall.
Bears don’t follow a rigid calendar. Instead, they respond to environmental cues. When natural food sources like beechnuts, acorns, and berries become scarce and temperatures consistently drop, bears instinctively seek out sheltered denning sites. A bear that had exceptional foraging in September and October may den slightly later than one that struggled to build fat reserves.
Key Insight: Maine bears don’t enter true hibernation the way some smaller mammals do. They enter a state called torpor — a lighter form of dormancy where body temperature drops moderately and metabolic rate slows, but the bear can rouse if disturbed.
Popular post: Cacomistle: Profile and Information
Female bears, especially pregnant ones, tend to den earlier than males. Sows will give birth to cubs in January or February while still in the den, making early denning critical for successful reproduction. Adult males, by contrast, may remain active into late November or even early December in years with abundant late-season food.
Den sites in Maine vary widely. Bears use natural rock crevices, hollow logs, root masses of fallen trees, and dense brush piles. In northern Maine’s heavily forested regions, bears often den under the root systems of large softwood trees, which provide insulation and structural protection throughout the winter.
Maine black bears typically begin emerging from their dens in late March through April, with peak emergence occurring in mid-April for most of the state. However, emergence timing varies significantly based on geography, weather patterns, and the individual bear’s sex and condition.
Adult males are almost always the first to emerge, often venturing out in late March when snow still blankets much of northern Maine. Their larger body mass gives them a slight advantage in tolerating cold temperatures after months of torpor. Females without cubs follow shortly after, usually in early to mid-April.
Important Note: Female bears with newborn cubs are the last to leave the den, typically waiting until late April or even early May. Sows are highly protective of cubs during this period and should be given a wide berth if encountered on the trail.
Similar story:

Southern Maine generally sees earlier emergence than the northern and western regions. In areas like York County and Cumberland County, bears may begin stirring as early as mid-to-late March. In Aroostook County and the western mountains near Rangeley and the Mahoosuc Range, emergence can lag by two to three weeks due to persistent snowpack and colder temperatures.
Spring weather plays a major role. A warm stretch in March can pull bears out earlier than average, while a late-season cold snap can delay emergence even when the calendar suggests bears should be active. According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, bear emergence is closely tied to the availability of early spring food sources like skunk cabbage, emerging grasses, and winter-killed deer carcasses.
By May, virtually all Maine black bears are fully active and moving through their home ranges. This is when bear activity becomes most noticeable to residents and outdoor recreationists across the state.
Maine is home to a single bear species: the American black bear (Ursus americanus). Despite the name, Maine’s black bears display a range of coat colors from jet black to dark brown and even cinnamon, though true black coloration is by far the most common in the Northeast.
Maine supports one of the largest black bear populations in the eastern United States, with estimates from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife placing the population at approximately 35,000 to 40,000 bears. The state’s combination of dense boreal forest, abundant soft mast crops, and relatively low human density creates ideal habitat for a thriving bear population.
Trending article: Animals That Eat Weasels: From Foxes to Eagles
Pro Tip: Maine black bears are not the same species as the grizzly or brown bears found in the western United States. Black bears are generally less aggressive and more inclined to flee from human contact, though they should always be treated with respect and caution.
Adult male black bears in Maine typically weigh between 250 and 450 pounds, though exceptionally large males have been recorded exceeding 600 pounds. Females are considerably smaller, usually ranging from 100 to 200 pounds. Bears in Maine tend to be larger than their counterparts in the southeastern United States, a result of the colder climate and the need to accumulate substantial fat reserves before winter.
You can explore the different types of bears found worldwide to better understand how the American black bear compares to other species in terms of size, behavior, and habitat preferences. For a deeper look at the broader genus, the brown bear offers an interesting contrast to Maine’s resident species, particularly in terms of aggression and denning behavior.
Maine does not have resident populations of grizzly bears, polar bears, or any other bear species. Occasional reports of unusually colored black bears sometimes generate speculation, but all confirmed bear sightings in Maine involve Ursus americanus.
The days and weeks immediately following emergence are a critical period for Maine black bears. After spending months in torpor without eating, drinking, or eliminating waste, bears wake up in a state of significant caloric deficit. Their first priority is finding food, and they will travel considerable distances to do so.

Early spring food sources in Maine are limited, which forces bears to be opportunistic. They seek out skunk cabbage along wetland edges, emerging sedges and grasses, insect larvae under rotting logs, and carrion left over from the winter. Bears are also known to dig up yellow jacket nests and ant colonies for the protein-rich larvae inside.
Pro Tip: The period right after emergence — roughly late March through May — is when bears are most likely to investigate bird feeders, garbage cans, compost piles, and pet food left outdoors. Remove these attractants before bears become active in your area.
Bears emerging from torpor experience a physiological state sometimes called “walking hibernation” for the first few weeks. Their digestive systems need time to fully reactivate, and they may appear lethargic or move slowly compared to their summer behavior. This is normal and not a sign of illness or injury.
Breeding season in Maine typically begins in June and runs through July, but the post-hibernation period is when bears begin establishing or re-establishing their home ranges. Males in particular will travel widely in April and May, sometimes covering dozens of miles as they assess territory and locate food. Understanding what natural predators threaten bears helps explain why even post-hibernation bears remain cautious and alert despite their nutritional vulnerability.
Females with cubs face an especially demanding post-hibernation period. Cubs born in January weigh only about half a pound at birth and are entirely dependent on their mother’s milk. By the time they emerge from the den in late April or May, they weigh roughly five to eight pounds and are beginning to learn foraging behaviors by following and observing their mother.

Hedgehog Ownership Laws in Arizona: What You Need to Know in 2026
Maine’s bear population is distributed unevenly across the state, with the highest densities found in the northern, western, and central regions. Knowing where bears concentrate their activity can help you plan safer outdoor excursions and understand where encounters are most likely.
The following regions and habitat types consistently produce the highest levels of bear activity in Maine:
Key Insight: Bears are not confined to deep wilderness. Suburban and semi-rural areas in southern Maine, including parts of Cumberland, York, and Sagadahoc Counties, see increasing bear activity as populations expand and natural food sources fluctuate.
Within any given landscape, bears concentrate their activity around specific habitat features. Wetland edges and beaver flowages provide early spring vegetation. Mature beech ridges are magnets in fall. South-facing slopes with early snowmelt are among the first areas bears visit after emergence. Riparian corridors — the strips of forest along rivers and streams — serve as travel routes connecting feeding areas throughout the season.
Trail cameras set up near beech ridges, berry patches, or wetland edges in April and May will almost certainly capture bear activity in high-density areas of Maine. Local hunting and wildlife forums, as well as reports from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, can provide current-season information on where bears are most active.

Maine black bears are wild animals capable of causing serious injury, but unprovoked attacks are extremely rare. The vast majority of bear encounters end with the bear retreating. Your goal during bear season is to avoid surprising bears, reduce attractants around your property, and know how to respond if an encounter does occur.
Bears that associate human spaces with food quickly become habituated and are far more likely to cause property damage or require intervention by wildlife officials. The most effective prevention is eliminating attractants before bears become active in late March.
Encounters on the trail are most likely during the post-hibernation period in April and May, and again during the fall hyperphagia period when bears are feeding intensively before denning. Practicing good trail habits significantly reduces your risk.
Important Note: If you encounter a black bear on the trail, do not run. Stand your ground, make yourself appear large, speak in a firm and calm voice, and back away slowly. Running triggers a chase response. Give the bear a clear escape route and it will almost always use it.
Backcountry campers in Maine’s bear country need to practice strict food storage protocols. Bears in heavily used areas like the Appalachian Trail corridor and Baxter State Park have learned to associate campsites with food rewards.

Understanding bear behavior more deeply — including what animals prey on bears in the wild — can give you a more complete picture of how bears perceive risk and why they typically avoid confrontation. You can read more about what animals eat bears and how predator-prey dynamics shape bear behavior throughout the year.
If a bear causes property damage, displays aggressive behavior, or appears to be injured or sick, contact the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at their regional offices. Do not attempt to handle, feed, or relocate a bear on your own. Reporting nuisance bear activity helps wildlife managers track population trends and respond to areas of increasing human-bear conflict before situations escalate.
Pro Tip: Maine law prohibits feeding bears, whether intentionally or through negligent storage of attractants. Residents in bear-active areas can be held responsible for creating conditions that habituate bears to human food sources.
Spring is also an active season for other wildlife in Maine. If you’re curious about seasonal animal activity patterns beyond bears, you might find it useful to explore when snakes become active in neighboring states like Vermont or Pennsylvania, as many of the same seasonal cues that drive bear emergence also trigger activity in reptiles and other wildlife.
Maine’s black bears are a remarkable part of the state’s natural heritage. By understanding their seasonal rhythms — when they den, when they emerge, and how they behave in the weeks following hibernation — you can share the landscape with them responsibly and safely throughout the year.

Maine’s tick problem is no longer just a springtime concern — it has quietly grown into a year-round public health challenge that every resident and visitor needs to understand. The rate of Lyme disease in Maine has increased more than tenfold in the past 20 years, and it continues to rise. Whether you enjoy hiking the trails of Acadia, gardening in your backyard, or simply walking the dog, knowing when ticks are active, where they hide, and how to respond can make a meaningful difference for your health and your family’s well-being.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know about tick season in Maine — from peak activity windows and common species to disease risks, high-exposure habitats, and clear steps for protection and response.
Key Insight: Ticks remain active throughout the fall, with cases of tick-borne diseases in Maine continuing to climb — and current-year case counts are on track to break tick-borne disease records.
According to the University of Maine, tick season in the state runs from early spring to late fall, with two distinct peaks — the first from April to May and the second from June to early July. However, thinking of tick exposure as a seasonal issue can give you a false sense of security.
Although most ticks are found during these peak months, it is important to note that ticks can remain active as long as the temperature does not drop below freezing. In fact, whenever the temperature rises above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, there’s a chance you could come across active ticks.
Explore this topic:
Adult deer ticks are active in the fall from late September through late November, and they can also emerge during winter whenever temperatures are above freezing. This extended window has become increasingly relevant in recent years.
Important Note: The habitat range for ticks has grown and will likely continue to expand as winters become warmer and shorter. Deer ticks may be active any time temperatures are above freezing, and experts say people should continue to take precautions even in winter, because ticks are now a year-round problem.
Here is a quick overview of tick activity in Maine by season:
Season
Months
Tick Activity Level

Early Spring
March – April
Moderate (rising)

Late Spring / Early Summer
May – June
Very High (Peak)

Winter
December – February
Low but possible
Active on warm days above freezing
According to the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, about two-thirds of the cases of Lyme disease in Maine are reported in June, July, and August — because the peak season for deer tick nymphs is June and July. All life stages will bite humans, but because the nymphs are tiny and their bites painless, they often go unnoticed.
About 14 different tick species live in Maine, but not all of them bite people. The most common ticks seen in Maine are the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), and the woodchuck tick (Ixodes cookei). Understanding the differences between these species can help you assess your risk level after outdoor exposure.
Understanding how ticks reproduce can also help you appreciate why populations grow so quickly and why early-season vigilance matters so much.

The blacklegged tick, commonly known as the deer tick, is prevalent throughout Maine, but especially in southern and coastal areas. These ticks are notorious vectors of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus, making them a significant concern for public health.
Adults are active from early spring to late fall, peaking in April/May and October/November, while nymphs peak in June and July. This tick’s life cycle requires at least two years for completion. Following its first appearance in southern Maine in the 1980s, this tick has advanced along the coast and then inland, and may now occasionally be encountered in northern Maine.
The American dog tick is common across Maine, particularly in the southwestern region. Known for their resilience in drier habitats such as open fields and lawns, these ticks are active from April to August, with their peak in May and June.
The American dog tick is not a vector of Lyme disease. This tick is particularly abundant in southwestern Maine, but its range has been expanding in recent years. Immature stages feed on voles and other small rodents, but adults are often found on humans, dogs, and other domestic animals. Adults are found from May through July but rarely later in the season.
The woodchuck tick (Ixodes cookei) can transmit Powassan virus. It has not been associated with Lyme disease but is a vector of Powassan virus. It will only occasionally bite humans, and it can be found throughout much of Maine, but is primarily found within the nests of its hosts. It is also frequently found in abandoned or seasonal buildings where squirrels have taken up residence.

Tick Season in Pennsylvania: What to Know and How to Stay Safe
The brown dog tick, or kennel tick, thrives in environments associated with dogs, such as kennels. Rare in nature in Maine, these ticks are more commonly encountered indoors and can complete their entire life cycle within human homes. They primarily transmit diseases to dogs, including canine ehrlichiosis and babesiosis.
Pro Tip: After any outdoor activity, always do a full-body tick check on yourself, your children, and your pets. Nymph deer ticks are roughly the size of a poppy seed — easy to miss on skin and fur alike.
Tick-borne diseases have rapidly become a significant public health issue in Maine and throughout much of the United States. The incidence and distribution of these pathogens continues to increase. Of the multiple tick-borne diseases found in the U.S., five are known to occur in Maine: Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, and Powassan encephalitis — all of which can be transmitted by the deer tick.
Lyme disease is an infectious, inflammatory disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. In 70–80% of infected individuals, a rash expanding from the tick bite and exceeding two inches in diameter will appear within a few days to three weeks after the bite. As the rash expands, it may develop paler bands, giving it a “target” appearance.
The initial symptoms of Lyme disease are fatigue, malaise, muscle aches and pains, headache, chills, and fever. Untreated, additional symptoms may occur including hot swollen joints, paralysis of one side of the face (Bell’s palsy), and shooting pains caused by disturbances in cardiac rhythm.

20 Spiders in Las Vegas: Complete ID Guide for Every Species You’ll Find
There were 3,218 reported cases of Lyme disease in Maine in 2024, nearly 300 more than in 2023. Maine consistently ranks among the country’s highest states in Lyme disease transmission, and it is estimated that up to 20% of Lyme cases may become chronic, with symptoms lingering for months or even years.
Anaplasmosis is caused by the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Though less commonly reported than Lyme disease, the number of reported cases has been increasing over the past twenty years — a trend especially pronounced in Maine, with cases nearly doubling annually from 2012 through 2017. Anaplasmosis is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick.
First symptoms occur within a few days of the tick bite and include chills, fever, headache, malaise, nausea, cough, and confusion. Lyme-typical rashes, inflamed joints, or neurological problems are not part of the symptom complex. There were 1,284 reported cases of anaplasmosis in Maine in 2024, a 65% increase from the year before.
Babesiosis is caused by a protozoan parasite (Babesia microti) that infects red blood cells, potentially causing hemolytic anemia in infected patients. Signs of babesiosis range from no symptoms to serious disease. Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, aches, fever, chills, sweating, body aches, dark urine, and anemia.
In some patients, particularly those who have had their spleens removed, are immunocompromised, or are elderly, the disease can become rapidly fatal. There were 309 cases of babesiosis reported in Maine in 2024, a 59% increase from the year before.

Know Your Enemy: Identifying the 5 Biting Flies That Plague Maine
Borrelia miyamotoi is a spirochetal bacteria closely related to the Borrelia species that cause tick-borne relapsing fever. It was first identified and isolated from ticks in Japan in 1995 and has since been detected in deer ticks in the eastern United States. In Maine, cases have been reported since 2016, but have remained in the single digits. Unlike other tick-borne pathogens in Maine, Borrelia miyamotoi can be passed from mother to offspring through the eggs, making larval ticks a potentially important stage in the transmission cycle.
Deer ticks are a vector for Powassan virus, a potentially deadly form of encephalitis. What makes Powassan particularly concerning is its transmission speed: Powassan virus transmission may take as little as 15 minutes of attachment. This is far shorter than the 24–36 hours typically associated with Lyme disease transmission, making prompt tick removal even more critical. You can learn more about tick-borne encephalitis and how it affects the nervous system.
Common Mistake: Many people assume that if a tick was attached for only a short time, there is no risk of disease. While Lyme disease typically requires 24+ hours of attachment, Powassan virus can transmit in as little as 15 minutes — so prompt removal always matters.
Maine’s dense forests, high grass, and abundant wildlife provide perfect habitats for ticks. But the risk is not evenly distributed across the state — some regions and microhabitats carry significantly higher exposure rates than others.
In six years of operation, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab has tested more than 22,000 ticks from every corner of the state. They found ticks from Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, and Waldo counties are most likely to carry the pathogens that cause Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. The Midcoast also has the most reported human cases of those illnesses and related hospitalizations.

Data from the Maine CDC show that the rate of tick-borne diseases is especially high among Mainers in the Midcoast. As explained by Griffin Dill of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab, “The deer tick is prone to drying out quite easily, so forested areas where it remains relatively humid — like it does along the coast — are really kind of perfect habitats for the ticks themselves.”
In contrast, pathogen prevalence is lowest in adult deer ticks from Maine’s northernmost counties: Aroostook (13.6%), Piscataquis (25.8%), and Washington (31.3%). That said, no county in Maine is entirely tick-free.
Habitat studies show that deer ticks are less associated with open fields and softwood forests and more associated with hardwood and mixed hardwood/softwood forests. They are especially associated with dense thickets of invasive plants, such as Japanese barberry or American bittersweet.
Animals that naturally prey on ticks can help reduce tick populations in certain environments. Learning about animals that eat ticks provides helpful context for understanding the natural checks on tick populations in Maine’s ecosystems.
Protecting yourself and your loved ones during tick season in Maine requires a layered approach. The Maine CDC has developed a helpful acronym — TICKS — to summarize the key steps:
Check this out: Tick Season in Alabama: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe Outdoors
Children are most susceptible because they tend to play outdoors the most, and people who spend time outdoors are at a higher risk. Reported cases of Lyme disease in Maine have a bimodal age distribution, indicating the highest risk in youth (ages 5 to 14) and adults over age 45.
Pets let outdoors can pose a risk, as they are likely to carry ticks back into the home. Dogs and other outdoor pets can get tick bites and tick-borne diseases. Vaccines are not available for all tick-borne diseases that dogs or other animals can get, and vaccines do not prevent your animals from bringing ticks into your home.
For more detailed guidance on keeping your dog safe, see these tips for preventing tick-borne diseases in your dog.
Reducing tick habitat around your home is one of the most effective long-term strategies. Ticks love shady, moist areas with tall grass, dense brush, and fallen leaves — all things many Maine yards naturally have. Here are practical steps to reduce tick exposure on your property:
Pro Tip: Light-colored clothing makes it much easier to spot ticks before they attach. After coming indoors, toss your clothes in the dryer on high heat for at least 15 minutes — the heat kills ticks more effectively than washing alone.

10 Giant Spiders in the World: Meet the Titans Lurking in the Shadows
Finding a tick on yourself, a child, or a pet can feel alarming, but staying calm and acting quickly is what matters most. If you find a tick, the sooner you remove it, the less likely you’ll get a tick-borne illness. Finding a tick on you, even if it was attached, does not necessarily mean that it spread any germs to you.
Important Note: Do not use petroleum jelly, nail polish, heat, or other folk remedies to remove a tick. These methods can cause the tick to release more fluids into the bite wound, potentially increasing your risk of infection.
The most common symptoms of tick-borne disease include body aches, chills, fever, headache, and swollen lymph nodes. People who have Lyme disease may also find an expanding rash somewhere on their body. This rash can sometimes look like a bullseye, but not always. If you experience any of these symptoms, talk to a healthcare provider.
Early symptoms of tick-borne diseases are usually vague — fatigue, fever, headache — and are easily mistaken for flu-like symptoms. Delays in diagnosing tick-borne illnesses allow the disease to progress, which can lead to more serious complications.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick Lab offers tick identification for free and tick testing to Maine residents for a $20 fee. Testing can take up to three days and should be used for surveillance purposes only, not for diagnosis. You can find more information and submit a tick at ticks.umaine.edu.

Maine has high rates of tick-borne diseases. Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis are the most commonly reported tick-borne diseases in Maine. Tracking the spread of tick-borne diseases allows communities, state officials, and healthcare providers to prepare strategies to prevent the spread of these diseases.
Anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, hard tick relapsing fever, Lyme disease, Powassan virus disease, and spotted fever rickettsiosis are all notifiable by both medical practitioners and clinical laboratories in Maine. Reporting clinicians must submit subsequent clinical and laboratory information following the initial report. Maine CDC also monitors tick-borne diseases through syndromic surveillance.
If you experience symptoms after a tick bite, your healthcare provider is responsible for reporting confirmed or probable cases to the Maine CDC. Your role is to seek care promptly and provide your doctor with as much detail as possible — including when and where you may have been exposed.

This data helps individuals educate residents about the need for early detection and treatment to prevent the progression to the debilitating late stage of these diseases. Staying informed about tick activity in your county and submitting ticks for testing when you find them contributes to the broader public health picture across Maine.
Key Insight: So far in 2025, case numbers of some human tick-borne illnesses have surpassed incidence rates of earlier years. Health care providers are reminded to consider testing patients presenting with possible tick-borne disease at any time of the year, including fall and winter when deer ticks are active.
Tick season in Maine demands steady, year-round awareness — not just a few weeks of caution in spring. By understanding when ticks are active, which species pose the greatest risk, and how to respond after a bite, you put yourself in the best position to enjoy Maine’s outdoors with confidence. Use the resources available through the University of Maine Extension Tick Lab and the Maine CDC, stay consistent with tick checks, and never hesitate to contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop after outdoor exposure.

Finding a neighbor’s cat roaming through your yard — digging up garden beds, using your flower borders as a litter box, or frightening your backyard birds — can be genuinely frustrating. You might assume the law is on your side. In Maine, however, the legal picture is more nuanced than most people expect.
Maine is one of only a handful of states with a comprehensive set of animal laws, yet when it comes to free-roaming cats specifically, the rules leave many property owners with fewer options than they’d like. Understanding exactly where you stand — and what you can and cannot legally do — can save you from making costly mistakes while helping you find a real solution.
Key Insight: Maine’s animal trespass law explicitly excludes cats by definition, which shapes nearly every legal option available to you.
In most of the United States, free-roaming cat laws vary widely by city and county. Laws across the country regarding free-roaming cats are far from uniform — there are huge variations relating to trespassing, cat licensing, mandatory neutering, and much more. Maine, however, is somewhat distinctive at the state level.
Only three states have comprehensive “cat codes”: California, Maine, and Rhode Island. California mandates minimum weaning times for kittens, yearly veterinary requirements, and holding periods for impounded cats. Maine’s cat-specific law addresses the seizure of stray cats and vaccination requirements.

10 Facts About American Curl Cats Every Feline Lover Should Know
But does Maine law actually stop a cat from roaming freely? The short answer is: not really. Under Maine’s animal trespass statute (Title 7, §4041), the definition of “animal” explicitly does not include cats. This single statutory exclusion has enormous practical consequences for anyone dealing with a neighbor’s wandering feline.
The catch is the law says — in plain English — that it does not apply to cats, which seems to indicate that the lawmakers know something about cats. Cats will do what cats have done since the dawn of time, and there is not much the law can do about it.
There has been legislative movement to change this. A proposal in the Maine legislature would add cats to the list of animals included in Maine’s animal trespass law. One of the bill’s sponsors, Representative Vicki Doudera, explained that her sponsorship came from a belief that cats are getting a “free and unfettered” pass to roam and do harm to bird populations. As of now, however, that change has not been enacted into law, and cats remain excluded from the trespass statute.
If you also keep backyard chickens or other animals, it’s worth understanding how Maine’s broader animal laws interact with your property rights. You can review backyard chicken laws in Maine for more context on how the state regulates animal ownership and property.
Even though cats are carved out of the animal trespass statute, you are not entirely without legal standing. Your rights just look different from what you might have with a trespassing dog or livestock.

A majority of states address free-roaming and feral cats as a local issue. Local governments deal with the problems associated with these cats, such as nuisance, trespass, property damage, and destruction of native wildlife. That means your first step is often checking whether your municipality has its own cat-related ordinances that go further than state law.
Maine law does define what a “stray cat” is for legal purposes. Under Maine Revised Statutes Title 7, §3919, a “stray cat” means a cat on the premises of a person other than the owner of the cat, without the consent of the owner or occupant of the premises, on a public street or on other public property, except under the physical control of the owner. This definition matters when it comes to involving animal control.
Beyond that, general property law principles still apply. A private nuisance is defined as an interference with a person’s enjoyment and use of their land. The law acknowledges that landowners, or those in rightful possession of land, have the right to maintain the unimpaired condition of their property and to enjoy reasonable comfort and convenience in its use.
Important Note: Your rights as a property owner don’t disappear because cats are excluded from the trespass statute. Nuisance law, small claims remedies, and local ordinances may still provide avenues for relief.
If the cat causing problems on your property is a known stray — not a neighbor’s owned pet — an animal control officer or person acting in that capacity may seize or humanely trap a stray cat or small animal and deliver it to an animal shelter, or to the owner if the owner is known. This is an important distinction: the legal process works differently depending on whether the cat has an owner.

Understanding how Maine handles similar animal-related issues can also be helpful. For instance, reviewing dog leash laws in Maine illustrates how the state treats owned animals differently depending on species, which helps explain why cats occupy a unique legal position.
This is where many frustrated property owners run into serious legal trouble. The temptation to take matters into your own hands is understandable, but Maine law draws firm lines around what actions are permissible.
What you generally cannot do:
What you can legally do on your property:
Common Mistake: Some property owners assume they can legally trap and relocate a neighbor’s cat on their own. In Maine, doing so without involving animal control could expose you to animal cruelty charges or civil liability. Always go through official channels.
Learn more:
Ensure any deterrent used is non-toxic, as causing injury to a pet can lead to criminal charges under animal cruelty statutes. This applies even to substances spread in your garden — if a deterrent harms the cat, you could face legal consequences regardless of your intent.
If your concern involves the impact of roaming cats on your chickens or other backyard animals, it may also be helpful to understand how other states handle similar property and animal conflicts. Readers in neighboring states can explore backyard chicken laws in New York or backyard chicken laws in Connecticut to compare approaches.
The question of trapping is one of the most commonly misunderstood areas of Maine cat law. The answer depends heavily on who is doing the trapping and what happens afterward.
Animal control officers can trap legally. An animal control officer or person acting in that capacity may seize or humanely trap a stray cat or small animal and deliver it to an animal shelter, or to the owner if the owner is known. If you call animal control and they respond to your property, they have the legal authority to set traps and handle the cat through official channels. In some cases, the agency may even offer to set a humane trap on your property to capture the cat.
Private citizens face much more legal risk. It is generally not considered appropriate or legal to trap someone else’s pet without their knowledge or consent. Most jurisdictions have laws that protect pets from being trapped or harmed without cause.

If you do trap a cat you believe is a stray — not a neighbor’s owned pet — Maine law provides a process. A person finding a stray cat or small animal and not knowing the owner or residence of the cat or small animal may take that cat or small animal to the animal shelter. The key phrase is “not knowing the owner.” If you know the cat belongs to a neighbor, taking it to a shelter without notifying that neighbor first creates significant legal and ethical risk.
Pro Tip: Before setting any trap on your property, contact your local animal control office first. They can advise you on what is legally permissible in your municipality and may handle the trapping themselves, protecting you from any liability.
If the cat is truly a stray, call the animal control officer. Shelters usually accept strays only from animal control officers, not from neighbors. No shelter wants to take in a pet by mistake. This is an important practical reality — even if your intentions are good, acting without animal control involvement can backfire legally and relationally.
If a neighbor’s cat has caused real, quantifiable damage to your property, you are not necessarily without financial recourse — even though the animal trespass statute excludes cats.
If a neighbor’s cat has caused quantifiable monetary damage to your property, you can seek financial compensation. For issues like destroyed plants or damaged furniture, you can sue the owner in small claims court. This legal venue is designed for disputes involving smaller sums of money and has simplified procedures.
Top story: 6 Possible Reasons Your Cat Is Vomiting
Maine law also specifically addresses situations where a cat harms your livestock. If the neighbor’s cat were killing your chickens, Maine law would let you do something about it. The town could fine the neighbor $100, or you could sue in small claims court to recover the value of your dead chickens. This is one area where the law does offer a clearer path to compensation for cat-related property damage.
To build a successful damages claim, documentation is essential:
Key Insight: Maine’s small claims court handles disputes involving relatively modest sums. If the cat damage is ongoing and cumulative, keep a running record — a pattern of incidents strengthens your case considerably.
You also have the right to file a lawsuit for property damage and seek recovery for the damages to your property. First, you would need to send the neighbor a demand letter requesting payment for the damages, including estimates of the costs to replace and repair. If they fail to comply within a specified period, you can proceed with a lawsuit.
If your backyard chickens or other animals have been injured or killed, the legal framework in comparable states may also offer insight into how courts treat livestock losses from neighbor animal incidents. You can explore backyard chicken laws in Texas or backyard chicken laws in Florida for comparison.

Given how limited Maine’s legal tools are for addressing a roaming cat, the most effective approach is usually a combination of direct communication, official reporting, and practical deterrence — rather than legal action alone.
Step 1: Talk to Your Neighbor First
In most cases, the best first step is to simply remind your neighbor to keep their pet contained within their property. Once informed, many pet owners will address the issue. A calm, non-confrontational conversation — explaining specifically what damage is occurring — often resolves things faster than any official complaint.
Step 2: Contact Your Local Animal Control
If a direct conversation doesn’t help, file a formal complaint with your local animal control officer. After a complaint is filed, an animal control officer will investigate. A first-time offense may result in a visit to the owner and a formal warning. If the problem persists, the owner may receive a citation and a fine.

Step 3: Apply Humane Deterrents to Your Property
While waiting for a resolution, you can take lawful steps to discourage the cat from entering your yard. If a conversation does not yield results, or if you prefer to avoid contact, you can implement humane deterrents on your property. Commercially available products are designed to discourage cats without causing harm, including motion-activated sprinklers and ultrasonic devices.
Step 4: Try Mediation
If you cannot solve the problem with a one-on-one conversation, you can try working with a mediator instead of going to court. Many Maine municipalities offer community mediation services at low or no cost, and this approach often preserves the neighbor relationship better than litigation.
Step 5: Pursue Legal Action If Necessary

If the problem continues and you have documented damages, small claims court remains an option. Be sure to send a written demand letter first, keep all records organized, and consult with a Maine attorney if the damages are significant.
Pro Tip: Check your specific municipality’s local ordinances — some Maine cities and towns have adopted their own rules about cats that go beyond state law. Your local animal control office can tell you what applies in your area.
Maine’s broader animal law landscape is worth understanding as context. The state also has specific rules governing other animal-related matters, such as roadkill laws in Maine and beekeeping laws in Maine, which reflect how the state balances property rights with animal welfare across different situations.
Dealing with a neighbor’s cat in your yard is rarely a quick fix in Maine. The law gives cats a uniquely wide latitude compared to other animals, and your most powerful tools are documentation, communication, and patience. When you understand exactly what Maine law does and does not allow, you can protect your property and your interests without inadvertently crossing a legal line yourself.
This information is for educational purposes only and is not intended as legal advice. Laws can vary by municipality, and situations differ. Always consult with a qualified Maine attorney for advice specific to your circumstances.
