@echo_pbreyer Every corporation over time comes up with crafty and underhanded ways to externalize their costs. They pass the buck of their own responsibilities onto civil society. Say, they weasel out of environmental protection laws through lobbyists. Or if they sell cigarettes, the healthcare system has the cost externalized to them, to take care of the health problems that cigarettes cause. This is just more of that externalizing of costs, with ChatControl.
The Metas of the world are extremely rich, and could afford to hire an army of moderators to catch all the CSAM, etc, getting sold on their platforms (remember, they get a cut of ad revenue). But why would they do that, when they can externalize the policing of CSAM onto civil society (with Age Verification mandates by gov't policy across the board)? Better - according to their amoral logic - to have every small time competitor be burdened with adding Age verification to their platform, whether it's needed or not.
So #ChatControl is, IMHO, just about externalizing costs (and CSAM is just used as an emotional appeal, just used as a rubric for this cost externalizing). They're actually protecting their ad revenue from CSAM, if people just opened their eyes and literally watched the flow of ad revenue. Armies of helpers can and are hired instead for other purposes by these corporate giants - to train LLMs. Way more profit is (foolishly) expected in that direction.

(1)在這之前我完全沒有和無人機主題的東西互動過
(2)我已經一段時間沒有使用FB或任何Meta的社交平台，不僅沒有瀏覽、按讚、留言，甚至連登入都沒有登入過(至少到外縣市之後都沒有)
(3)手機中也沒有安裝FB或任何Meta的App，若要使用我都是用瀏覽器登入網頁版，而我的瀏覽器昨晚才剛清過瀏覽記錄、Cookie等，應是完全空白的狀態
綜上所述，我實在想不到為什麼會這樣，以前我讀過有案例可能是透過麥克風收音監控，但我連App都沒安裝，這到底是怎麼做到的，這真的是太誇張了

This was a serious trial. For the first time, the most powerful names in social media were being held to account for the inherent design of their platforms, rather than the content hosted on them. They were accused of deliberately and maliciously building products that keep children hooked, with disastrous consequences for the mental wellbeing of young people. It was a landmark case – a big tobacco moment for big tech.
But there were specific reasons why the prosecution was deeply disturbed to see Meta Ray-Bans in court. “We had fought hard for an anonymous jury. We didn’t want the names disclosed in a way where Google could go pull up their Gmails, where Meta could go pull up their Facebook accounts,” Lanier tells me in his warm Texas drawl. “Then Zuckerberg shows up with security guards wearing Meta glasses. They can easily [take photos and then] do facial identification and figure out exactly who the jurors are.” This was not product placement, Lanier says – it was the deployment of the most relentless form of digital surveillance the world has ever known

The prosecution appealed to the judge, pointing out that Zuckerberg’s entourage was breaking rules that forbade cameras in the courtroom. “The judge made them swear that they hadn’t taken any pictures.” Lanier says. “And then they took the glasses off.”
The case of KGM v Meta et al was always going to be as hi-tech as it was high stakes. KGM – also known by her first name, Kaley – claimed that an addiction to social media that had begun with YouTube at age six and Instagram at age nine had caused her to develop body dysmorphia, anxiety and depression. (Snapchat and TikTok, named in Kaley’s original complaint, had settled out of court for an undisclosed sum before the trial began.) Lanier’s team had to convince the jury that Meta and Google had engineered their products to be addictive. It was a test case that could blaze a trail for thousands more to come.

The negative backlash over Meta's new feature that allowed anyone to use someone's personal photos and likeness to generate AI content without even notifying them (which had automatically opted in all public Instagram accounts of anyone over 18) was so overwhelming that they are removing it just a few days after it was introduced.
Sure, sneaky practices to normalise AI slop and the use of people's data without explicit consent aren't disappearing overnight, but this is a win regardless. It's also a reminder that "it's the future, it's inevitable, we should embrace it" is plain false.
Nobody, even those who made AI Ghibli avatars or generate 2 sentence response emails through ChatGPT not knowing (or caring) about all the negatives, wants their images, and the faces of themselves and their family to be fair game and their privacy to be violated. Maliciousness on the internet is not a new thing, but features like that give bad actors new tools to spread false info, create revenge porn, discredit, humiliate and target anyone, especially women and marginalised groups. How we react to them sets a precedent for the future.

Look, I want to “protect the children” as much as anyone. I also wish that the cynical, craven executives at Meta would spend their retirements getting by on nothing more than SNAP and social security and Medicaid.
Having said that, the greatest damage Facebook did to the world was mobilising grown-ass adults. Genocide in Myanmar, pyramid schemes and scams that target older folks, so much fraud, stalking and abuse. Fox News-ifying a whole generation of older people. Wrecking news as an industry. Defrauding advertisers. The list goes on and on.
I know that “won’t somebody think of the children?” is politically easy to sell. But it is such a small slice of the harm they’ve done to society. If focusing on the children gets them brought low, fine. But I can’t agree that it’s the most important.

Thirty-three states have banded together to sue Meta, alleging that the company was exploiting its young users on Instagram and Facebook for profit, including by collecting data from children without parental consent. Four of those states—California, New Jersey, Colorado and Kentucky—also claim that the company misled consumers about the addictive design features on the platforms, thereby causing mental health problems in children who got hooked from an early age.
The damages requested by those four states add up to a whopping $1.4 trillion, Meta said in a recent court filing, a figure that would allegedly go even higher with the other penalties the attorneys general seek to add. The number is high by many standards but especially when compared to the company’s market capitalization, which is just above $1.5 trillion.

And while we're here, it will never not be funny that Zuckerberg renamed a whole company based on a product they never finished, that failed miserably, beautifully.
I had to do some inventory tasks for #work today at a remote #datacenter. I was listening to #NPR on the drive home and the discussion was on #AI, specifically on how the #tech titans like #OpenAI, #Anthropic, #Google, and #Meta have quietly stepped away from #safety mechanisms as their models improve, the #ethical implications, and #government #regulation. While the quiet distancing from safety is of obvious concern, the discussion on regulation caught my attention.
As one host put it (paraphrasing here) you'd think these companies don't want regulation but that's not necessarily the case. They are looking for regulation that favors them, whether it's getting in bed with the government or squashing out the competition. The bottom line is still about maximizing profits.
The last part was some interesting food for thought and it makes sense. If correct, it's some good indication of where they (and we) are headed.
On the flip side, #ChatGPT and these #LLMs still make mistakes that, unless you have at least *some* previously acquired knowledge on said topic, are believable.
Case in point: A few months ago, prior to one of my lab servers dying, I wanted to host both #Debian and #FreeBSD repos on the box (which was running the former). ChatGPT provided erroneous step by step instructions, including instructions to build FreeBSD Ports on Debian...using apt. 🤦

The announcement by Meta that they'll start selling AI compute potentially broke one of the pet narratives of the AI bubble: compute is so scarce that we need to spend all the money to build more. That story is the justification for crypto-turned-AI companies with poor fundamentals like CoreWeave to continue existing.
Nothing about stock or commodities prices makes any sense anymore so maybe tomorrow their stock will be up 2x.

Welp ...I was on threads, for a few days. Then, I got a captcha. The audio version for #accessibility goes to a different page, so you can't use it, but I used #AI to prove I'm a human.
Then, I had to verify my phone number by providing a security code. tried several times, never received the text, and eventually got locked out for requesting too many codes.
Tried again this morning, from the app this time given I figured maybe the website was a third-class citizen. Worked, got the text right away, was asked for a selfie for verification because fuck knows why, and then got told that my "appeal" had been submitted. Appeal?
Finally got told that my account was permanently disabled because "our technology" had determined my account was not adhering to the community guidelines. No specification on what I supposedly did wrong, just ...our technology says no.
Ok then. Happy to keep up a mainstreamish presence but #meta, our lords and saviors no doubt, need to go squash bugs. #threads

Apparently 6500 employees were “drafted” (i.e. given the choice to agree or quit) to form an AI training squad, and they were required to make software puzzles for their AI to solve, over and over again. It looks like the mind-numbing work was so brutal and meaningless that an employee hijacked an internal meeting to curse executives out in front of thousands of internal viewers.

Kann sich niemand vorstellen, was #meta mit den gesammelten Daten anstellen kann -und wird? Merkt keiner dass diese Dinger kein nerviges Spielzeug, sondern Waffen sind?
