In fact I am fascinated by it and the benefits it can yield.

However, I think that the location and impact of the #datacenters that run AI need to be carefully considered.

One only has to look at #musk 's Colossus datacenter in #Memphis and the pollution from the #lng power turbines.

So, I think that datacenters in #vancouver should be carefully vetted. Protest is good.

"It’s not a coincidence that nearly all of OpenAI’s original founders left the company under acrimonious conditions, nor that every tech billionaire has a largely identical AI company. The frenetic AI race is inseparable from the petty, clashing egos of the unfathomably rich, hellbent on dominating one another.

Indeed, if Musk were to win his bid, that could be devastating for OpenAI, especially as it prepares this year for a potential initial public offering. Yet, to assume that the future of AI development will be determined by a personality contest misses the point. Yes, Brockman’s diary entries are revealing, as was former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati’s testimony about Altman pitting executives against each other, confirming my previous reporting.

But fixating on questions of whether Altman is untrustworthy, or whether Musk is even less so distracts from a far deeper problem. If OpenAI lost its footing as the AI industry frontrunner, another barely distinguishable competitor – Musk’s xAI or other – would simply replace it. That includes companies like Anthropic, who enjoy a better reputation yet engage in many similar behaviors like compromising careful decision-making for speed, disregarding intellectual property, and aggressively scaling their computing infrastructure to the detriment of communities."

"The entire AI industry relies upon two companies that expect to burn at least $1 trillion in the next four years, with Anthropic, the supposed “compute-conscious” AI company, committing to at least $330 billion in spend in the next few years.

Where does that money come from, exactly? Because neither of these companies have anything approaching a path to profitability.

Based on a deep analysis of every publicly-available source on AI compute, I can find only two significant — over $100 million a year — purchasers of AI compute outside of Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, or associated parties like NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google and Amazon. Those two are Poolside, which reportedly spends $400 million a year, an untenable position as it only raised $500 million in total funding before its $2 billion in funding collapsed earlier this year, and Perplexity, which appears to spend some amount of money with CoreWeave and Microsoft Azure. Both run at a massive loss.

Nowhere is this lack of true demand more obvious than in the neoclouds, which only seem capable of signing big deals with Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft (for OpenAI), and Google (for OpenAI). Oh, and Meta, who is doing this because the existence of ChatGPT gave Mark Zuckerberg such profound AI psychosis that he’s made Meta build him a CEO chatbot to talk to and burned over $150 billion.

The AI industry is a brittle, circular economy, one only made possible by a lack of financial regulation and a tech industry that’s run out of ideas. Without hyperscalers propping up OpenAI and Anthropic, there would be no reason to buy so many GPUs or build so many data centers, and neoclouds would have no reason to exist.

This is a giant con, a giant illusion, and a giant mistake."

Musk and his colleagues have the good fortune of living in a moment when there is no structural actor capable of challenging their dominance. The working class has virtually ceased to exist as an organized force. Absent pressure from below, political parties themselves offer no meaningful opposition to Muskism. The effect is paradoxical. On the one hand, the lives of capitalists are made easier when they can intensify the exploitation of their workers and purchase influence in politics with little resistance. But it also means they have no incentive to restrain their most antisocial impulses or consider the long-term consequences of their actions.

Muskism typifies this tendency: if Fordism and post-Fordism were both, in different ways, organized to secure social peace, Muskism is oriented toward social war. The relative thinness of the Muskist mode of regulation is symptomatic: the working-class antagonist is so weak, the social war so asymmetric, that there is no need for a negotiated peace. At the moment, the strategy seems to be working.

In broad strokes, these are some of the main elements of the Muskist regime of accumulation. Fuse with the state by becoming a monopoly provider for essential functions. Concentrate production while prioritizing resilience, independence, and control. Sell technology for national and individual self-reliance in a hostile world filled with racialized others. Accelerate digitization to make everything programmable, including and especially the human brain.

This is the other side of the Muskist mode of regulation: a vision not of shared prosperity but of violence. The fan contract for those inside the walls of a fortified West, and expulsion for those marked as illegitimate. After both the models of Fordist industrialism and post-Fordist outsourcing and globalization have receded, Muskism holds out the prospect of a purified community of survivors.

In many ways, the ICE incursion was Muskism in action: heavily armed agents equipped with data analytics dashboards and facial-recognition software, using high technology to purge those migrants deemed out of place and punish their “woke” enablers.
