In Welsh folklore, the bard Taliesin loved riddles, and said that King Maelgwn should fear a mighty force that is "the strongest creature from before the flood, without flesh, without bone, without vein, without blood, without head, without feet, without signs of old age [though] older still.... It neither sees, nor is seen.... On land or sea it is without equal." He meant the wind.

In one version of the Finnish creation myths, the demigod magician Väinämöinen fell into the sea. There, a waterfowl lay three eggs on his knee. Väinämöinen moved his leg, causing the eggs to break. The yolks became the sun, the egg whites became the moon, and the shells' crumbs became the stars.

Certain grimoires claim that Kobal is Satan's demonic master of revels and stage manager, or possibly his court jester. The name derives from the "kobaloi" (also the source for the word "goblin") - mischievous thieving spirits from Greek mythology that accompany the god Dionysus.

Aconite (also known as monkshood and wolfsbane) is a group of flowering plants infamous for their poison. The leprechaun bent over the fine fairy boot. Repairing them was always ticklish - the sidhe imbued their footwear with such strange spells, and didn't care how much they wore them out with dancing. Hard to repair without shredding the enchantment, but was there a better way to earn a pot of gold?

In Finnish mythology, the thunder god Ukko wielded the hammer Vasara. This was probably originally a stone axe, as pagan Finns who discovered neolithic stone axes believed they were the weapons of Ukko left behind after a lightning strike. Shamans collected these stone axes, believing them to hold supernatural powers.

An adder stone (or hag stone) is a stone, usually glassy, with a naturally occurring hole in it. It was believed in Celtic Britain that the stones were the hardened saliva produced by a large mass of serpents. In certain Welsh legends, adder stones can turn people invisible or allow them to see invisible creatures.

Lares were guardian deities in ancient Roman mythology. A specific lar could be the protector of a road, field, town, etc. Domestic lares protected everything in a particular house. Their presence and blessing was required at all important family events; a lar’s statue was even placed at the table during family meals.

The Questing Beast is a monster in Arthurian folklore hunted by King Pellinore. It resembles a leopard with hooves and the head and neck of a serpent, and makes the sound of a pack of dogs hunting. It was likely inspired by descriptions of giraffes.

Some sources say that Merlin used clever engineering to move the stones. Others say that he used magic - making the stones light enough to carry or causing them to fly or teleport.

The killing of a bear was followed by a great feast in its honour, in which people tried to convince the bear's spirit that it had died accidentally rather than being murdered. Afterwards, the bear's skull was hung high in a pine tree so its spirit could re-enter the heavens.

Chickens also gave auspices via their eating habits.

At the top, a small diagram labeled “Jupiter & Major Moons” shows Jupiter with four labeled moon orbits: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. In the center, the “TRAPPIST-1 System” shows a small red star with seven closely packed planets labeled b through h, each shown as Earth-size rocky worlds on tight, overlapping orbits. A note indicates the orbits are enlarged 25 times. At the bottom, the “Inner Solar System” shows Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars spaced much farther apart around the Sun. The overall message emphasizes how compact the TRAPPIST-1 system is compared to both Jupiter’s moons and our inner solar system.

The gods were so moved by Cygnus's grief and devotion, they turned him into a swan and put him in the night sky.

In AD 536, when the sun seemed to lose its light and the climate turned harsh, that catastrophe may have been remembered in the terrifying Norse legend of Fimbulvetr.

The surrounding text implies that this is Ásgarðr (Asgard) burning (by Emil Doepler, 1905).

This image depicts a dramatic scene from Norse mythology by German artist Emil Doepler (1905), illustrating the final phase of Ragnarök—the apocalyptic destruction of the world in Norse cosmology.

The painting shows a fortress or stronghold, silhouetted in dark tones against an intensely fiery sky. The structure, which represents Ásgarðr (Asgard, the realm of the gods), appears as a dark mass with towers and battlements rising against the flames. The sky is engulfed in vivid oranges, reds, and yellows, creating a sense of overwhelming conflagration.

In several myths, she argues with her husband (such as wanting the god to protect the Winnili people or to favour Prince Agnar over his brother Geirröðr). When Odin disagrees, Frigg uses trickery to get her way.

He decided to remarry, but wanted his second wife to be just as old and wise. The Eagle thought the Owl of Cwm Cowlyd could be appropriate, so he made discreet inquiries to see the Owl she was as old as she claimed.
