In Welsh folklore, the bard Taliesin loved riddles, and said that King Maelgwn should fear a mighty force that is "the strongest creature from before the flood, without flesh, without bone, without vein, without blood, without head, without feet, without signs of old age [though] older still.... It neither sees, nor is seen.... On land or sea it is without equal." He meant the wind.

In Finnish mythology, the thunder god Ukko wielded the hammer Vasara. This was probably originally a stone axe, as pagan Finns who discovered neolithic stone axes believed they were the weapons of Ukko left behind after a lightning strike. Shamans collected these stone axes, believing them to hold supernatural powers.

An adder stone (or hag stone) is a stone, usually glassy, with a naturally occurring hole in it. It was believed in Celtic Britain that the stones were the hardened saliva produced by a large mass of serpents. Happy New Year 2026! I hope this year is a better year than the last.
This linocut shows how I imagine the great white stork of European folklore, who carries babies to new parents.
The ancient stork-the-baby-bringer legend was made popular by Hans Christian Anderson’s story called ‘The Storks’. The stork is quite stylized, inspired by ancient Chinese art, and not an attempt to accurately 🧵

"And Theia was subject in love to Hyperion and bare great Helios (Sun) and clear Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn) who shine upon all that are on earth and upon the deathless Gods who live in the wide heaven."

The strix is a bird of ill omen in Italian folklore (often linked to owls). According to Ovid, the strix would drink babies' blood. However, Pliny claimed it would instead feed babies its own foul milk. In later legends, the strix was often a shapeshifting, bloodthirsty witch.

In Welsh Folklore, the Eagle of Gwernabwym had lost his wife after living centuries with her, raising many children. He decided to remarry, but wanted his second wife to be just as old and wise. The Eagle thought the Owl of Cwm Cowlyd could be appropriate, so he made discreet inquiries to see the Owl she was as old as she claimed.

In Greek mythology, the Anemoi are the wind gods, sons of the dawn goddess Eos and the dusk god Astraeus. They include Boreas (the freezing north wind of winter), Zephyrus (the gentle west wind of spring and early summer), Notus (the hot south wind of late summer and autumn), and Eurus (the turbulent east wind).

"In the morning he arose, and when he went forth, behold a shower of snow had fallen the night before, and a hawk had killed a wild fowl in front of the cell. And the noise of the horse scared the hawk away, and a raven alighted upon the bird. And Peredur stood, and compared the blackness of the raven and the whiteness of the snow and the redness of the blood to the hair of the lady that best he loved, which was blacker than jet, and to her skin, which was whiter than the snow, and to the two red spots upon her cheeks, which were redder than the blood upon the snow appeared to be."

"Only to a magician is the world forever fluid, infinitely mutable and eternally new. Only he knows the secret of change, only he knows truly that all things are crouched in eagerness to become something else, and it is from this universal tension that he draws his power."

Seeing a lot of "discourse" about the new #Odyssey movie lately...
Yet, although I was a proud owner of a multi-set CD of the #Odyssey as a child & my love of #GreekMythology -- I can't help wishing it was a #Circe adaptation instead (I'd even take a whole new Journathan journey😂 )!

The Yule Goat is a northern European folkloric figure tied to Yule and Christmas. His role has changed dramatically over the centuries, and he was later mixed with Santa Claus. In Scandinavia, the "Jultomte" is accompanied by a goat when delivering presents.

In Egyptian mythology, the desert god Set kills his brother Osiris out of jealousy, and wars against Osiris' son Horus for the crown of Egypt. However, Set still sides with the other gods against the devouring serpent Apep. He wants to rule Egypt, not destroy it.

When the Greek god Zeus declared war against the Titans (who were most of his relatives), he recruited those family members who had been persecuted by the Titans for being monstrously ugly - the Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires (Hundred-Handed Ones). They eagerly helped him win.

The Yule Cat is a huge cat in Icelandic folklore that eats people who did not receive new clothing before Christmas Eve. The cat incentivized farmworkers to finish processing the wool they collected before Christmas, since they were rewarded with new clothes.

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War is considered the end of the Age of Heroes. In some versions, it was purposefully instigated by Zeus because he was worried that all these demigods could be a threat to the gods. Thus, Zeus caused a war to make them slaughter each other.

"There's a snake on the western wave....
He's as long as a city street,
And he eats the dead.
There's a hole in the bottom of the sea
Where the snake goes down.
And he waits in the bottom of the sea
For the men that drown...."

"And now the day was spent, the hour stole on when one would doubt if it were light or dark, some lingering light at night's vague borderlands. Suddenly the whole house began to shake, the lamps flared up, and all the rooms were bright with flashing crimson fires, and phantom forms of savage beasts of prey howled all around."
Ovid, Metamorphoses 4.389
