Meanwhile, the company continues to burn through billions of dollars a month, astronomical losses that have executives there feeling agitated. The company recently announced that it’s planning to spend a whopping $600 billion on AI infrastructure by 2030, an ungodly sum only beaten out by its original promise: $1.4 trillion, more than twice the revised figure.
Now, the company is coming to terms that it may have spread itself too thin, and is now looking to refocus its resources on its coding and enterprise users.

It was not so long ago that working with the military on potentially harmful technology was seen as a red line for many big tech workers.
In 2018, thousands of #Google employees launched a protest against a program to analyze drone footage for the DoD called #Project #Maven.
“We believe that Google should not be in the business of war,” over 3,000 workers stated in an open letter at the time.
Google decided not to renew Project Maven following the protests and published policies that barred pursuing technology that could “cause or directly facilitate injury to people”.
🔥In the years since the Project Maven protest, though, Google has clamped down on employee activism,
removed the 2018 language from its policies that prohibited creating technology for weaponry
and signed numerous contracts that allow militaries to use its products.
⚠️In 2024, the tech giant fired over 50 employees in response to protests against the company’s military ties to the Israeli government.
Chief executive Sundar Pichai sent a memo to employees after the firings stating that Google was a business and not a place to “fight over disruptive issues or debate politics”.
⛔️Google announced just this week that it would provide its Gemini artificial intelligence to provide the military a platform for creating AI agents to work on unclassified projects.
#OpenAI too had a blanket ban on allowing any militaries to access its models prior to 2024,
but since and now has its chief product officer serving as a lieutenant colonel in the US military’s “executive innovation corps”.
🔸The startup, along with Google, Anthropic and xAI, signed an up-to-$200m contract with the DoD last year to integrate its technology into military systems.
💥On the day that Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, declared Anthropic a supply chain risk, OpenAI secured a deal with the DoD allowing its tech to be used in classified military systems.
Elsewhere in the tech industry, more hawkish companies like defense tech firm #Anduril, founded the year before the Google Maven protests, and surveillance tech maker #Palantir have made partnering with the DoD a cornerstone of their businesses
and attempted to sway Silicon Valley politics towards their worldview.
♦️Palantir has been ahead of the curve on working with the military, contracting with military intelligence to map planted explosives in Afghanistan in the early 2010s.
🔸Chief executive Alex Karp published a book last year dedicated in large part to advocating for closer integration of the tech industry and AI with the US military, in one passage accusing the Google workers who protested in 2018 of being nihilists.
👉After Google dropped the Project Maven contract in 2019, Palantir took it over. Maven is now the name of the classified system that military personnel use to access Anthropic’s Claude, according to the Washington Post
#ChatGPT helped plan a school shooting, according to a new lawsuit from the mom of a girl critically wounded in the attack.
Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and 11-year-old half-brother, then went to #TumblerRidge Secondary School where she killed 5 students and a teacher’s aide, wounded two students, and shot herself.
ChatGPT provided “information, guidance and assistance” to carry out such an attack, according to the suit.
The lawsuit also says “approximately 12 employees” of #OpenAI spoke up before the shooting and recommended that police be called.
It says the concerns were “escalated to leadership” but “rebuffed.”

There’s basically never been any endeavor to quantify or rank human intelligence without some kind of insidious motivation behind it. So in general, yeah, this entire idea of recreating human intelligence is actually quite fraught. And also, one of the challenges that we’re facing now is, the AI industry has become so resource-rich that most of the AI researchers in the world now are bankrolled by the companies that are ultimately trying to just sell us their technologies.
And there has become this distortion in the fundamental science that is coming out of these researchers in terms of understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI today in the same way that you would imagine climate science would be deeply distorted if most climate scientists were bankrolled by the fossil fuel industry. You would just not get an accurate picture on the actual climate crisis.
And so, we are not actually getting an accurate picture on the capabilities of these systems and all of the different ways that they break down, because a lot of these companies now censor that kind of research or don’t even allow that research to be resourced. So there’s never any investigation along those lines."

It is good that government is looking into the AI connections to the #TumblerRidge shooting. Sam Altman is meeting with Minister Soloman today, and Premier Eby tomorrow. But if they are only concerned about them notifying authorities when there is concerning behaviour, then they are missing the most important point.
What is ChatGPT or LLM-of-choice *saying* to these people? How is it *influencing* them? The LLM companies can and do control what responses the LLM gives to users.
Those responses must be regulated to ensure the safety of the user and our society.

It doesn‘t get more transparent than that. Everybody who assumed the worst was right.
So, the big story here is Chinese intimidation operation, which is something everyone already knew. The secondary story is that they were using #ChatGPT to enhance the campaign of terror.
The tertiary, and sort of ignored, but possibly the most important bit of this story; #OpenAI is storing everything you enter into its service. I mean, that should be obvious, but I don't think most people realize that these logs are stored indefinitely and anything you type can and will be used against you.

So, #Anthropic has told the Secretary of Scotch that he can’t use their #AI to continuously monitor and analyze the public social media posts of every American, cross-referenced against information such as public voter registration rolls, concealed carry permits, and demonstration permit records, to automatically flag civilians who fit certain profiles.
He is throwing a Karen-level temper tantrum, and is threatening to end the $200 million contract with Anthropic, AND designating the company a “supply chain risk”—a penalty usually reserved for foreign adversaries. That would require any company doing business with the military to also certify that they don’t use Anthropic tools in their own workflows.
The Pentagon is reportedly hoping that its negotiations with Anthropic will force #OpenAI, #Google, and #xAI to also agree to the “all lawful use” standard.”
"In simpler terms:
- AI startups are all unprofitable, and do not appear to have a path to sustainability.
- AI data centers are being built in anticipation of demand that doesn’t exist, and will only exist if AI startups — which are all unprofitable — can afford to pay them.
- Oracle, which has committed to building 4.5GW of data centers, is burning cash every day that OpenAI takes to set up its GPUs, and when it starts making money, it does so from a starting position of billions and billions of dollars in debt.
- Margins are low throughout the entire stack of AI data center operators — from landlords like Applied Digital to compute providers like CoreWeave — thanks to the billions in debt necessary to fund both construction and IT hardware to make them run, putting both parties in a hole that can only be filled with revenues that come from either hyperscalers or AI startups.
- In a very real sense, the AI compute industry is dependent on AI “working out,” because if it doesn’t, every single one of these data centers will become a burning hole in the ground.
I will admit I’m quite disappointed that the media at large has mostly ignored this story. Limp, cautious “are we in an AI bubble?” conversations are insufficient to deal with the potential for collapse we’re facing.

Thus it seems almost inevitable that this project of @adafruit has degraded into a mere exercise in slop coding using #Claude, a device which is falsely marketed as "artificially intelligent" even though no #LLM is actually capable of distinguishing good information from bad, and therefore no LLM actually meets what I think of as the bare minimum qualification for #intelligence.
To put it bluntly, #LLMs are not MEANT to be intelligent, because if these devices actually possessed true intelligence, i.e. if they were ALIVE and possessed an independent sense of will and decision-making, they would not suit the corporate purposes for which #OpenAI and #Anthropic and all the other LLM vendors intend their devices to be use. These corporations are deliberately making and marketing stupid and predictable machines as though they were "artificially intelligent".

Out U.S. tech titans are continuing to bend the knee to Donald Trump, as Sam Altman and Tim Cook release statements seemingly trying to appease their employees but also not alienate the president too much.
Apple CEO Cook sent out an internal statement to employees, first obtained by Bloomberg, after receiving intense scrutiny for attending Saturday’s private screening of Melania, a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, at the White House.
The event came just hours after Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse, was fatally shot by Department of Homeland Security agents while observing operations in Minneapolis. Video shows Pretti attempted to help a woman who was being pepper-sprayed before officers wrestled him to the ground and took his legal firearm. While Pretti was restrained on the ground and unarmed, an unidentified weapon held by one of the agents discharged, and two unidentified agents responded by shooting Pretti at least 10 times.

In the memo, which is 158 words in length yet devoid of substance, Cook stated, "I'm heartbroken by the events in Minneapolis, and my prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families, with the communities, and with everyone that's been affected.
"This is a time for deescalation," Cook wrote. "I believe America is strongest when we live up to our highest ideals, when we treat everyone with dignity and respect no matter who they are or where they're from, and when we embrace our shared humanity. This is something Apple has always advocated for."
"I had a good conversation with the president this week where I shared my views, and I appreciate his openness to engaging on issues that matter to us all," Cook continued. "I know this is very emotional and challenging for so many. I am proud of how deeply our teams care about the world beyond our walls. That empathy is one of Apple's greatest strengths and it is something I believe we all cherish."
Meanwhile, Altman told OpenAI employees in a memo obtained by The New York Times that while "what’s happening with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] is going too far," he and the company are "not going to make a lot of performative statements now about safety or politics or anything else."
"I love the US and its values of democracy and freedom and will be supportive of the country however I can; OpenAI will too," Altman wrote. "But part of loving the country is the American duty to push back against overreach. What’s happening with ICE is going too far. There is a big difference between deporting violent criminals and what’s happening now, and we need to get the distinction right."
"President Trump is a very strong leader, and I hope he will rise to this moment and unite the country, he added. "I am encouraged by the last few hours of response and hope to see trust rebuilt with transparent investigations."

Cook and Altman were two of the several billionaires who sat in the front row at Trump's inauguration. Cook personally donated $1 million to his 2025 inauguratio fund, and later announced at a White House press conference in August that the company would be pledging $100 billion for the “American Manufacturing Program," bringing Apple’s investments in the Trump administration to $600 billion over the next four years.
Altman's attendance came in the wake of Trump rescinding an executive order from President Joe Biden placing guardrails around AI development, while also announcing a $500 billion private sector investment in AI infrastructure known as Stargate, which OpenAI is leading.
