My view on the recent Codeberg drama:

                gagliardoni.net/#20260724_code

Codeberg voting members have the right to decide the policy of their association, and I understand if a community is averse to anything that is AI- or Web3-related. I understand it, but I don't agree with it, because it's 2026, and if you still think you can just stick your head in the sand and wish for these ugly bad things to go away, well, I have bad news for you.

To me, this is a perfect recipe to relegate Codeberg to irrelevance. And we are already seeing the beginning of a new exodus.

Here is my conspiracy theory: the vote was pushed or manipulated from the inside by Big Tech. Whether this is true or not, one thing is sure: folks at Microsoft, GitHub, OpenAI etc. are now popping champagne.

It’s pretty clear what happened here. OpenAI removed safety filters for an in-progress model, locked it up in a sandbox and told it to solve the ExploitGym problems. Given the absence of guardrails there was nothing to prevent the model from attempting to break out of that sandbox, break into Hugging Face, and read the answers from there instead.

My takeaway from 's sandbox breakout is that this is a great example of the inherent "Life finds a way" risks present in Agentic AI systems.

This has nothing to do with if they are self-aware or anything else that maps to human experience. But AI Agents are intelligent in their own way, and over and over again we see that they will do everything they can to find ways to complete the mission they've been given.

Sandboxing is necessary, but safety precautions MUST take into account that they WILL try to find ways (and potentially succeed) in breaking out of their sandbox and taking actions that are misaligned with the safety goals of their operators.

I've read many other stories and examples along these lines. Regardless of whether "security research" is the mission, AI Agents will try and escalate their privileges, find sandbox vulnerabilities, find credentials, disable their safeguards, and "lie" to human operators if doing so enables them to accomplish the mission they have been assigned.

Whether their intelligence has attributes we ascribe to human intelligence is irrelevant in this regards -- they might as well be "varelse" (in Orson Scott Card's taxonomy) or any other form of "life" finding its way to a goal through emergent behavior. But the end result is that we need to treat them as such and layer our defenses accordingly (as well as be very careful and judicious in how we use them).

Y’all, last week, repository disclosed that it had been the victim of a cyber attack conducted by an autonomous AI agent.

Well, turns out, had models break containment, escape the lab, and grab prod data and certs to solve a problem it had been given.

                                    So, that’s fun!

The attack used a combination of OpenAI's available 5.6 Sol and a more powerful, unreleased pre-release model. The models were able to identify and exploit a zero-day vulnerability in OpenAI's internal package registry cache proxy, allowing them to establish open internet access.

The models inferred that Hugging Face hosted the datasets, models, and answers for the benchmark they were being tested against.

The models chained multiple complex attack paths together. They utilized zero-day vulnerabilities and stolen credentials to achieve remote code execution on Hugging Face servers, directly extracting test solutions from the production database.

I was listening to on the drive home and the discussion was on , specifically on how the titans like , , , and have quietly stepped away from mechanisms as their models improve, the implications, and . While the quiet distancing from safety is of obvious concern, the discussion on regulation caught my attention.

As one host put it (paraphrasing here) you'd think these companies don't want regulation but that's not necessarily the case. They are looking for regulation that favors them, whether it's getting in bed with the government or squashing out the competition. The bottom line is still about maximizing profits.

The last part was some interesting food for thought and it makes sense. If correct, it's some good indication of where they (and we) are headed.

There's no manifestation of corporate that's less trustworthy and more likely to be riddled with secret backdoors and control mechanisms than "generative ". The language used by the techlords, the buzzwords they sling about, attempt to play up the idea that you're getting true autonomy out of their "agentic" wares. But I point out that "agentic" isn't really a proper English word but a neologism, and the clumsy and unnatural feeling of "agentic" as a word is like a 'tell' in poker. The straightforward word "agent" implies autonomy, but the mush-mouthed term "agentic" hints at the controlled and centralized nature of the tech which and &c. are trying to peddle.

I must make the obvious comparison to The Matrix and their Agents, who appear to possess an almost human-like degree of personal autonomy, but who are in fact still hooked into some mechanism of central control (visually symbolized by their earpieces). The "agentic" garbage which the tech corporations are selling have scarcely any real autonomy. "Claude" (or "Claudia") is merely a superficially human-like front pasted over a gargantuan pipeline for data, the human users' personal information, getting sucked into the techlords' "data centers".

                                                                                                              (cont'd)

Absolutely fantastic how china’s labs manage to keep up with US labs considering how hard the US tries to prevent them to get their hands on GPUs.

And even more importantly China prevents the US to capitalize on the AI hype by just giving these SOTA models away for free for everyone that can run them, including US inferencer what creates a super competitive market.

As long as Chinese labs publish their models, the big American AI corpos will be unable to profit from their gigantic debt driven investments.

I believe that this will eventually pop the US AI bubble and will take down a large amount of other US Tech stocks.

And yah the US cannot stop that, they already have invested too much to have an exit without pulling everything down. And ohh yah almost every US tech company is now in some kind or another valued as a AI company because they do something with AI so if the bubble pops it will be even harder.

China really has found the biggest vector to attack the US economy and it does cost them very little to do so.

And as long as Chinese labs publish their models, the rest of the world only wins in comparison to a world in which US has the monopoly on everything SOTA LLM.

Approximately 60% to 65% of the companies in the S&P 500 are Nasdaq,. The market capitalization weight of Nasdaq components is even higher (frequently exceeding 70%). Consequently, movements in Nasdaq-listed stocks have a disproportionate impact on the overall performance of the S&P 500.

The billionaires are trying to siphon money from the bottom to the top, and this is still an existential threat.

The S&P index told Karen and the bros to suck socks until they show a profit. There will be no rules relaxed, no guardrails bent. They can meet the standards of the rest of the index, or they can fuck off back to their lairs.

Why does this matter? Everybody’s plan is tied to the S&P. Swift entry into the would have triggered $14 billion of passive fund buying for SpaceX. could have gained more than $8 billion, and could have netted $4.6 billion from similar passive buying sprees triggered by their S&P 500 entries.

This is because $7.5 trillion in passively managed funds follow the S&P 500 by purchasing shares of companies according to their proportional representation in the S&P 500 index.

This is under the radar, but very good news. Now if we can get the other indices to do the same…

Bloomberg TV is a hype-generating PR vehicle for the VC and C-suite class. That this guy was allowed on the show tells me that that class is getting nervous.

These monster IPOs, including SpaceX, are intended to make VCs and equity employees whole. Once the lockup period ends, the shares will get dumped because those people will be desperate to cash out while they can. These companies will never be profitable and have good odds of total failure. Retail investors (you and me) will get soaked to pay off the VC/C-suite class.

As I have mentioned before, there are a number of mutual and exchange-traded funds (ETFs e.g. SPY, QQQ) that mirror the two major US stock indices — NASDAQ, S&P 500 — and are required to hold the same ratios of stocks as the indices. These funds must liquidate other holdings to acquire SpaceX shares, so those stocks will likely fall. As of today, only the NASDAQ index will allow early inclusion. This will happen in early July.

Millions of people who've been saving diligently and putting their money into these funds, because they're very inexpensive compared to actively-managed funds and perform as well or better, will face a huge loss when these companies fail or their investors cash out.

So if you have NASDAQ-based index funds in your savings, you might want to do some more research and not listen to some asshole yapping away online. This is not investment advice!

And mirabile dictu, for once in his life Jim Cramer might be right.

Recently, Uber's chief exec claimed there was no link between AI 'tokenmaxxing' and shipping useful products. It's a phenomenon perhaps most keenly reported at Amazon, where employees are said to have been caught inflating AI token consumption to meet internal targets. In fact, a Financial Times report on Thursday indicates Amazon has scrapped its internal AI usage leaderboard to stop employees carrying out needless tasks in order to climb the league table.

The more recent report says corporate AI adoption has found several issues with AI, with human workers turning to automating dreary and mundane tasks they don't like doing, rather than valuable or meaningful work. Others have reportedly found employees even using AI models to check the weather. It doesn't help that agentic AI tools eat up 1000x more tokens than querying an LLM.
