Guten Morgen! ☀️

Lustiges Phänomen: Bei proprietärer Software heißt es "works as designed".

Ever struggled to explain “Linux fragmentation” to non‑tech friends? 🚗💨

You’re chatting with friends, family, or a non‑technical manager and the question lands:

“Why are we using Red Hat at work when my friend uses Ubuntu at home? Aren’t they both just Linux? Why is this so complicated?”

Explaining a modular, kernel‑based world to someone used to one neat product (macOS, Windows, iOS) can feel like explaining car mechanics at a dinner party.

So how do you make it click?

Here’s an analogy I’ve used for years that usually gets an instant “Aha!” from non‑tech people.

                    Engine vs. Vehicle

                    🔧 Kernel = Engine
The Linux kernel is the engine: the core machinery that actually makes things run. It’s powerful and reliable – but an engine alone doesn’t get you anywhere.

                    🚗 Distro = Vehicle
A distribution (distro) is the whole vehicle built around that engine: body, seats, dashboard, storage, tools. It’s the engine plus everything else you need to actually use it, assembled for a particular purpose.

And just like in real life, we don’t pick a vehicle because of the paint job; we pick it because of what we need it to do.

                    Everyday Examples
To pull it out of the “enterprise IT” bubble, I frame it with everyday roles.

🚛 The Commercial Truck (Server) – RHEL, Debian
A big truck that hauls heavy loads non‑stop. Not designed for comfort or looks, just for doing the job, reliably, for years. That’s your server: often no GUI, older but proven components, maximum stability.

🚙 The Daily Driver (Workstation) – Fedora, Ubuntu LTS
Your normal car: comfortable, up‑to‑date, good enough for commuting, shopping, road trips. That’s a developer or desktop distro: modern tools, stable enough for everyday work and testing.

🛠️ The Specialist Van (Niche Distros) – Kali Linux

A van packed with custom tools for a single trade – like a locksmith’s or electrician’s van. You don’t use it for everything; you use it when you need that specific toolkit. That’s a security‑focused distro.

                    So is this “fragmentation”?
“They all share the same core engine, but the ‘vehicles’ are customized for different jobs. Servers, laptops, and security toolkits all run Linux – just tuned differently.”

                    Same engine, different roles:
                    • long‑running servers,
                    • everyday work machines,
                    • highly specialized tools.

                    Your Turn

How do you explain the “many Linuxes” problem to people who aren’t in IT – friends at a bar, parents, or colleagues from non‑tech teams?

Drop your best analogies and stories below 👇

I left NixOS because as much as I loved configuration as code for handling everything and the benefits that brought, the foundational way NixOS works meant that some of the stuff I need to use just cannot be run on it. (No, don't give me suggestions, it's already too late and NONE of the suggestions I received worked.)

I decided to swap to CachyOS as I was very used to Arch and wanted to try it. CachyOS is excellent and does a great job of smoothing out some of Arch's sharp edges but I really missed declaratively controlling my machine. I went looking for a solution, most of which were... rather odd. A version of Arch Linux that's declarative but everything's flatpaks? Why?

I did find something that works so far. Configuration is done either through yaml or lua files. You can use Lua for doing things conditionally or if you need more control. Manages packages, services, dotfiles. It's been about 2 days, but so far so good. We'll see if I still like it in a week.

                                Why I love freeBSD

                                Additional data

I love FreeBSD because it doesn't rename my network interfaces after a reboot or an upgrade.

I shall dwell on what Stefano may mean as I have experienced this nightmare on the Linux path countless times

                                • using the if tools ifconfig ifup ifdown route and others on a LAN local network I repeat on a LOCAL network
                                • these tools were depreciated due to many issues with them, decades later (IIRC)
                                • no linux distro ever told me as a user that I needed to use replacements like ip
                                • I install a new version of a random distro (was on an ESR) and could not address the NIC's no iftools
                                • names of the NIC's were also replaced with cumbersome cryptic names, again, no fucks given no warning, I should have read the remarks in the GNU tool sources?
                                • WTF?!?

In that period I needed to enter the world of freeBSD
it was a chilibox experience with three main factors. Great docs, consistent tools logic and control governed by a central body of all, no guerilla tool changes which could disrupt server up keep flow. Just rest, ease and stability

Mind you I know BSD from before the chilibox, in fact I've played with BSD way before even Linux was in the balls of though of Torvalds

                                TLDR;

                                • choose BSD for your servers if you need consistent OS behaviour for decades
                                • choose Linux for bleeding edge changes and chances of breaking server (VMs) at regular updates
                                • choose win64 for love of being tortured
                                • choose mac to give away your aurum to the mac overlords

These are just 14341 crates (palindrome number and about 5.9% of crates.io) and it already seems something of cosmical proportions. Like some sort of megastructure. And we have some data!

Out of 14341 crates, 46% depend directly on tokio, 4.8% depend directly on syn, only 44 depend on a rustc_* internal crate, almost all of them being rustc_version and even being the most downloaded crate of all crates.io, only 166 depend on `hashbrown`.

It's been a bit quiet over the last 24 hours, but we've got a couple of noteworthy updates: Microsoft's re-release of a critical Windows 11 hotpatch addressing RCE flaws, and the launch of Betterleaks, a promising new open-source tool for secrets scanning.

                                                                                                                                                                            - The hotpatch is specifically for devices enrolled in the hotpatch update program and managed via Windows Autopatch, offering crucial fixes without requiring a system reboot, which is vital for mission-critical environments.

                                                                                                                                                                            - Developed by Zach Rice, the original author of Gitleaks, Betterleaks introduces features such as rule-defined validation using CEL, token efficiency scanning (boasting 98.6% recall), a pure Go implementation, and parallelised Git scanning for improved performance.
                                                                                                                                                                            - Future plans for the project include support for additional data sources, LLM-assisted analysis for better secret classification, automatic secret revocation via provider APIs, and optimisations for AI-generated code workflows.

It is a surprisingly hard problem and I want to talk about some of the issues we faced.

The UK Government publishes a lot of Open Source code - nearly everything developed in-house by the state is available under an OSI Approved licence. The UK is generally pretty relaxed about people, companies, and states re-using its code. There's no desire and little capability to monetise what has been developed with public money so it becomes public code.

What about the Open Source that UK Government uses?

The state uses big projects like WordPress, as well as moderately popular NPM packages, and small Python libraries and everything in between. But can it pay the maintainers of that software?

A version of this blog post was originally published on Hackernoon.

The code that the world relies on is often developed by underpaid engineers on the brink of burn-out. While I don't think anyone wants Open Source to have a paywall, it seems obvious that large organisation should pay their way and not rely solely on volunteer labour.

Here are some of the problems I faced when trying to get the UK Government to pay for OSS and how you as a maintainer can help make it easier for large organisations to pay you.

Firstly, lots of OSS doesn't have a well defined owner; so who gets the money?

But Governments and other organisations need to know who they are funding and where the money is going. The danger of accidentally funnelling money to a sanctioned state or person is just too big a risk for most organisations.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        What Can You Offer?

Even when there is an owner, there often isn't an easy mechanism for paying people. Donation sites like GitHub Sponsors, Ko-Fi, and Patreon are great for individuals who want to throw a small amount of money to creators but they can be problematic for larger organisations. Many OSS projects get around this by offering support contracts. It makes it much easier for an organisation to justify their spend because they're no longer donating to something which can be obtained for free; they're paying for a service.

This doesn't have to be a contract offering a 24/7 response and guaranteed SLA. It can be as simple as offering best-effort email support.

The important thing is to offer an easy way for a larger organisation to buy your services. Many organisations have corporate credit cards for lower-cost discretionary spending which doesn't require a full business-case. How easily could a manager buy a £500 support contact from your site?

Maintainers don't only have to offer support contracts. Many choose to offer training packages which are a good way to raise money and get more people using your product. Some project maintainers will speak at your conference for a suitable fee.

Again, the aim here is for maintainers to offer a plausible reason for a payment to be made.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Playing Well With Others

Open Source has a brilliant culture of allowing multiple (often anonymous) contributors. That's fine when there's no money involved, but how does a moderately sized project decide who receives what share of the funding? Services like OpenCollective can make it easier to show where the money is going but it is better to discuss in advance with all contributors what they expect as a share.

If people think they're being taken advantage of, or that a project maintainer is unjustly enriching themselves, it can cause arguments. Be very clear to contributors what the funding is for and whether they're entitled to any of it.

Finally, we faced the issue that some OSS projects didn't want to take money from the "big bad state". They were worried that if people saw "Sponsored by the Government" they would assume that there were backdoors for spies, or that the developer might give in to pressure to add unwanted features. This (usually) isn't the case but it is easy to see why having a single large organisation as the main donor could give the impression of impropriety.

The best defence against this is to have lot of paying sponsors! Having the state as one of many partners makes it clear that a project isn't beholden to any one customer.

It isn't impossible to get Governments to spend on Open Source. But state spending is heavily scrutinised and, bluntly, they aren't set up to pay ad hoc amounts to non-suppliers, who aren't charging money. While large projects often have the resources to apply for Government grants and contracts, smaller projects rarely have the time or expertise. It is critical that maintainers remove the barriers which make it too hard for organisations to pay them.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        In Summary
