Today in Labor History July 28, 1917: The Silent Parade took place in New York City, in protest against murders, lynchings, and other violence directed towards African Americans. Organizers set up the parade to protest the East Saint Louis race riots (May-July 1917), when whites murdered up to 200 African Americans, and caused 6,000 black residents to become homeless. While Woodrow Wilson was entering World War I to “make the world safe for democracy,” black Americans were asking when he’d do the same for them.
The Silent March was organized by a coalition of groups, led by the new NAACP. Up to 15,000 participated. Organizers wanted president Wilson to enact anti-lynching legislation. He refused. Wilson appointed numerous racists to his cabinet and was an outspoken defender of segregation on “scientific” grounds. He was also fond of telling racist jokes. As an academic, prior to his political career, he was an apologist for slavery. And he used his authority to actively prevent admitting African Americans into Princeton as students or faculty. Ironically, one of the primary organizers of the Silent March, W.E.B. DuBois, had been an enthusiastic supporter of the Woodrow Wilson presidential candidacy, calling him a “liberal Southerner,” who would deal fairly with Negros.
The East Saint Louis racist pogrom occurred during one of the largest migrations of black workers from the South to the North. Between 1910 and 1920, half a million African Americans migrated north to Chicago, Saint Louis, Detroit, Philadelphia, and other cities. In 1919, there were 38 different racist riots in the U.S., all directed against the black community. The massacre in East Saint Louis began in response to a strike by white employees of the Aluminum Ore Company, after the bosses hired black replacement workers, a common practice of the bosses to divide the working class and weaken unions. Additionally, many of the unions were overtly racist and excluded black workers, including the Aluminum Ore union. To make matters worse, employment agents were going to the South and recruiting African Americans under false pretenses, offering them stable jobs and housing when, in reality, they were being recruited to work as scabs. So, it is likely that many, if not most, of the workers didn’t even know they were being hired as scabs. Regardless, they wouldn’t have been allowed to join the union, either.
Racism by unions and white workers was not inevitable in those days, and it was certainly counterproductive to the aims of working people of all backgrounds and identities. Consider that in 1920, in rural Mingo County, West Virginia, when the coal bosses brought in African American workers as scabs, the UMWA encouraged them to join the union and the strike, and achieved solidarity between white, native-born workers, African Americans from the South, and Italian immigrants. This is portrayed in John Sayles film, Matewan. And by 1916, thanks largely to the superb organizing of Ben Fletcher, all but two of Philadelphia’s docks were controlled by the IWW, uniting a workforce that was 33% Irish, 33% Polish & Lithuanian, and 33% African American. Fletcher also traveled up and down the east coast organizing dockers across race. At that time, roughly 10% of the IWW’s 1 million members were African American.

For the first time since protests started in Tirana, I cannot find a livestream of it on YouTube.
Looking at the Albania sub-Reddit, there are indications that a protest was planned as usual for tonight (in that a graphic was circulated with the details), but the two channels I have been able to rely on for livecasts are not posting any. And it is 45 minutes past what the normal start time would be.
EDIT: rumor of crackdown, arrests
I'll keep looking for reporting from a reputable source, but I saw a FB post from a lawyer offering defense to protestors who've been arrested.
For those outside #Albania who'd like to help, watch/like DW's, Al Jazeera's, etc coverage of the #protest to incentivize them to keep covering the #FlamingoRevolution. And if you're in a position to communicate more immediately with them, ask them to follow up on why we're not seeing live coverage of the protest tonight, whether there were arrests, etc

Today in Labor History June 16, 1976: 20,000 students protested in Soweto South Africa, against the requirement that they learn the Afrikaans language in their schools. They considered Afrikaans to be the language of the brutally racist and repressive Apartheid regime. The uprising spread to seven other black townships and became known as the Soweto Uprising. The police responded by shooting directly into the crowds of children and teachers. Official reports claim that the police killed the 176 people, mostly children. However, some estimate that over 700 were killed. By the end of the year, thousands had died in demonstrations throughout the country.

Today in Labor History June 14, 2017: A fire at Grenfell Tower in London killed 72 people and destroyed 151 flats. The fire spread quickly and did so much damage due to a shoddy refurbishment job by Rydon Construction in 2016 in order to save money. The residents were overwhelming working-class people of color. They had been complaining for years about safety violations. To this date, no one has gone on trial or faced punishment for the fire. Some Members of Parliament tried to demonize residents and blame them for their own deaths. Yet they have no problem sending people to prison for 24 years for inconveniencing, or embarrassing, those supporting genocide in Gaza.

Four Palestine Action activists have been sentenced not on the basis of the convictions for criminal damage (through a jury trial) but on the basis their crime *really* was terrorism (a subsequent decision by the presiding judge).
This not only violates the sanctity of jury trials (the jury was not informed of this possibility), it also is a retrospective legal decision, essentially violating the Rule of Law.
Its a direct attack on civil liberties!

Today in Labor History June 12, 1963: Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers was assassinated in his home in Jackson, Mississippi by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White Citizens' Council and the Ku Klux Klan. Evers, a World War Two veteran, had been the NAACP's first field secretary in Mississippi. He was organizing to end racial segregation at the University of Mississippi and other public facilities. He had also been active in organizing to integrate Mississippi’s public, all-white beaches and parks, including Civil Disobedience actions, like “wade-ins,” in Biloxi. Evers had been under constant surveillance by the FBI. They followed him home every day, but on the day of his assassination they were absent. Several all-white juries in the 1960s failed to reach verdicts with De La Beckwith, but he was finally convicted in 1994 based on new evidence. He died in 2001.
Bob Dylan wrote his song "Only a Pawn in Their Game" about Evers’s assassination. Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam” is also about the Evers case. Phil Ochs’s classic satirical folk song "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" refers to Evers, as do his songs "Another Country" and "Too Many Martyrs." And Malvina Reynolds references Evers's murder in her song "It Isn't Nice."

Because immigration enforcement has absolutely zero jurisdiction over elections, the presence of agents near voting locations acts as illegal voter intimidation under the law (Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act (codified as 52 U.S. Code § 10307(b)) and states enforce strict buffer zones (50-200ft) to keep unauthorized individuals away from polling places.
If you see ICE or any unauthorized armed presence near a poll, report it immediately. Go inside and notify the head poll worker or local election officials on site, as they hold the legal authority to remove these people the property. Get photos of their faces if possible.

Turkey's main opposition CHP leader Özgür Özel led a march to parliament after protesters demolished a police barricade. Today in Labor History May 22, 1968: New York police broke through the barricades at Columbia University, busting the student occupations there. As a result, 998 were arrested and over 200 injured. Students were demanding a black studies program and an end to military recruitment and ROTC on campus. Sound familiar? However, today’s student protests are bringing back the worst of 1960s-‘70s police brutality and university intolerance for Free Speech along with McCarthy era firing, blacklisting and doxing of academics for the crime of criticizing the Israeli government, under bogus claims of antisemitism.

May 21, '79, brought the White Night #Riots in #SanFrancisco. #DanWhite (a former #cop) killed 2 people but his "#Twinkie defense" got him only 7 1/2 years #jail. Tension between #police & #gays was already high; the ex-cop getting such a soft #sentence set off the riots (police were openly wearing "Free Dan White" T-shirts). Biggest gay #protest in US since #Stonewall. Police retaliated a few hours later, raided a gay bar in #RiotGear, beat the crowd badly; several sued.

“Wheat paste is a way to get art and messaging into public spaces,” says Mark Strandquist, an artist from Philadelphia, who was walking around his neighborhood in early March, past storefronts covered over in plywood, when he realized those boards and empty windows could serve as canvases. He put out a call to artists, and within a few weeks the project, called Fill the Walls with Hope, had collected dozens of downloadable images from them. Strandquist and his fellow artists have put up more than 1,000 posters with a home-cooked glue concoction made from flour and water. Many of the posters share messages of public health and safety, among them, “Mask Up” and “Don’t Let Racism Go Viral.”

"To cook wheat paste, use four parts water and one part flour. Start by boiling your water. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour with enough cold water to create a lump-free goo, then pour this mix into the boiling water. Turn the burner down low, and stir continuously for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, and stir another 10 minutes. Wait until cooled to use.
Print your poster on thin paper so the paste can seep through, preferably 20-pound, uncoated bond paper. Once on site, use a wide paintbrush to add a layer of paste just slightly larger than your image. Press your poster into the paste, pushing out any air pockets. Paint another layer over the top to seal."

"Consider your safety and your privilege. “Don’t go out alone,” says Strandquist, who, as a 34-year-old white man, can poster the city in broad daylight with an impunity he knows won’t be extended to artists of color. Many of the group’s posters were put up with permission, but some are what he calls “uncommissioned.” Amplify the work and words of artists from the neighborhoods where you’re postering.
A wheat-pasted poster might be ripped down after an hour or slowly fade over a year. Think of the layered aesthetic of a collection of posters as an ongoing public conversation. “It’s a way for artists to respond to a crisis,” Strandquist says. “And help us imagine a better, more equitable world.”
