Today, I was forced to use the GMail website to fix a problem I was having with messages. I don't care what people say. It's absolutely atrocious and headache-inducing. It's also overly and needlessly complicated, and yes, that includes all the little shortcuts, turning NVDA browse mode off, etc. I switched to Thunderbird 102 when they shut down the Basic HTML site. But today, I thought of something very interesting. Third party clients can access GMail. Why couldn't someone recreate the Basic HTML site, either as a site that retrieves e-mail or as a web application? Apparently, someone already made a concept demonstration of it.

I've also heard that screenshots have been taken of the original pages. If someone could do this, it would be wonderful for the blind community. Yes, Thunderbird works, but sometimes, it's simpler and quicker to just use the site. What I don't know, though, is if setting could be changed that way. I imagine that searching for messages would still work.

Now, if only someone could bring back the Mobile Youtube site from 2017! That was also wonderful and useful, unlike the modern mess!

Why I love freeBSD

I love FreeBSD because it doesn't rename my network interfaces after a reboot or an upgrade.

I shall dwell on what Stefano may mean as I have experienced this nightmare on the Linux path countless times

• using the if tools ifconfig ifup ifdown route and others on a LAN local network I repeat on a LOCAL network
• these tools were depreciated due to many issues with them, decades later (IIRC)
• no linux distro ever told me as a user that I needed to use replacements like ip
• I install a new version of a random distro (was on an ESR) and could not address the NIC's no iftools
• names of the NIC's were also replaced with cumbersome cryptic names, again, no fucks given no warning, I should have read the remarks in the GNU tool sources?
• WTF?!?

In that period I needed to enter the world of freeBSD
it was a chilibox experience with three main factors. Great docs, consistent tools logic and control governed by a central body of all, no guerilla tool changes which could disrupt server up keep flow. Just rest, ease and stability

Mind you I know BSD from before the chilibox, in fact I've played with BSD way before even Linux was in the balls of though of Torvalds

TLDR;

• choose BSD for your servers if you need consistent OS behaviour for decades
• choose Linux for bleeding edge changes and chances of breaking server (VMs) at regular updates
• choose win64 for love of being tortured
• choose mac to give away your aurum to the mac overlords
• choose the abacus for absolute stability

🔍 Regex capturing groups for extracting usernames and user IDs – why they work surprisingly well.

The problem: you have email addresses, display names, full name fields, maybe LDAP entries – and you need to extract clean usernames or user IDs from all of them. Every system formats things differently.

🧩 The approach: capturing groups in regex to grab the relevant parts, then assemble the identifier from the matched groups. Example: user.name@gmx.de with the pattern ([^.]+)\.([^@]+)@.+ captures "user" in group 1 and "name" in group 2. Concatenate both and you get "username" as a clean identifier. Different source format? Different pattern, same logic.

📦 Why this beats custom parsers: extraction rules are defined declaratively. Adding a new source format means adding a new pattern, not writing new code. And regex is supported almost everywhere – C++11, Python, Java, Go, JavaScript all handle this.

⚠️ For really complex input formats this approach has its limits though. At some point it is worth looking at alternatives like RE2, CTRE, or PEG-based parsers.

Anyone else composing user identifiers from regex groups? Curious if you hit the same edge cases or went a different route entirely.

I see that #Microsoft #Windows 11 now sorts apps into categories like “productivity" and “creativity” by default.

How, though? By looking up a numeric category identifier in a 15MB JSON file that comes with Windows. Apps are not allowed to specify their own categories, nor can new categories be defined other than by Microsoft.

Good grief, what absolute nonsense.

I've been #reading the #Lisp in Small Pieces book, and it has helped me put names to a lot of concepts that I knew about Lisps and programming language design/implementation in general. It also provides a great historical perspective to #PLT, especially by mentioning all approaches that were tried but abandoned.

But other than being very very verbose, I find it hard to understand because it keeps changing the model of the #interpreter every chapter. It starts with using Alists to model environments, then uses objects in the next chapter for the same, and in the next one, switches to using closures.

I get that it does this to showcase all possible ways of modelling an interpreter in Lisp, but it is quite disorienting to me as a reader.

But I can't say that the author didn't forewarn me. This is literally the fourth sentence of the book:

“To explain these entities, their origin, their variations, this book will go into great detail.”

It is a decent read, though the language feels a little outdated. It is translated from French so that may be the reason of the overly magniloquent language.

In the period where we both wrote our static web pages in HTML and the period where I wrote Dynamic webpages with database backends in the most simple HTML and JavaScript possible all websites were still fast.

The first is the netscape period. The second a few years later.

Somewhere down the line people started to use IDEs to code static websites. The programmers of the IDEs never imagined that people would abuse those environments in such a way.

Since those days it started to go down fast. It became catastrophic when people started to use yswyg HTML editors.

So far, I've been coding up my reinforcement learning assignments from scratch, which has been great.

For my next experiment, though, I want to use ANNs for function approximation, and code that's compatible with standard algorithms and environments commonly used in the field. So, I'm looking into RL libraries!

I started with torchrl, just because it's prominent and torch is the research standard. I've been trying to get it to work for a few days now, and... I hate it! Just a really convoluted system of abstract interfaces with shoddy documentation for how to use them.

I think I'll try skrl next. That seems simpler, more elegant, and much better documented (also, it uses torch under the hood).

That said, I worry both of these libraries are too prescriptive. They're streamlined for a traditional RL workflow, but I'll be building some weird hybrid algorithms, and I dunno if they'll fit. But we'll see! I can't even investigate that until I get PPO working in a custom environment.

Yes vim is a superb source code editor. The syntax highlighting is sublime!

My current thinking is that in order to make a resolution independent UI toolkit one must first have a resolution independent drawing library?

The things I've found on that were algorithms based on device independent pixels.

Is that still actually the state of the art?

My primary design constraint is that I want the scaling to be zero cost when there's no actual scaling happening.

Can anyone point me to some good books/posts on the subject?
